Los Angeles Area Nursing Schools

Published

Hi All,

I'm originally from LA, but I moved to florida a few years back. Well do to circumstances I'm having to move back. I've completed my two years of prereqs for nursing out here and just got my acceptance letter today. :(

I'm checking out schools out there but it seems like everyone has a waiting list. I have a 3.14 gpa, and all science class prereqs done and most electives (depends on the school). Does anyone know which schools I'd have the most of a shot of getting into without having to wait 2 years? Or does just every school in LA have a massive waiting list?

Thanks in advance. :)

i don't know of one that doesn't have a waiting list, it just depends on how long...

i think compton college is one year; santa ana college is one year. most of the others are 1 1/2 to 2, tho...

unless you want to go to private school...no wait, but more $$$$!

When I moved from Orange County to Long Beach, I was on Goldenwest and Cerrito Colleges waiting list. I was accepted within two weeks after i applied at LA Harbor College in Harbor City 1111 Figeuroa.

Long Beach City College's wait list is really short if you have all of your prereq's done. As soon as everything was done, I was in. Some people even got accepted without finishing a couple of classes and finished them during the program (which I don't recommend). Hope that helps!

Thanks so much. I will definitely check out LBCC. At least it'd be an easy commute with the blue line. :)

I live in GA now, but I am from LA. Like a previous poster said Harbor College doesn't have a waiting list. I just did some research for my cousin and talked directly to the nursing department. They said they start a new class twice a year.

You know I didn't even notice that you and the poster below you gave different schools. I saw you said Long Beach in yours, and her's was long beach so I put the two together. :chuckle

I will definitely check out Harbor also. Thank you!

Hi there,

I know Compton Colleger does not have a waiting list. At least that is what my god mom told me and she is the assistant director and instructor.

I was going to try and go there but their pass rate for NCLEX is not good. It is around 65%.

I think LBCC and Harbor City is good. If you are looking for BSN try Mount St Marys in LA. It does not require all the classes to enter because some they include in the program. I thought about going there but I want to get alot of classes out of the way since it is expensive.

I know live in Spokane, Washington, but I lived in California for 10 years.

I was originally a diploma grad from NY. After I moved to California, I decided that I wanted to go back for my BSN. I enrolled in Long Beach City College to finish my prerequisites, than transferred to Cal State Long Beach. It was a very popular program. I was very happy because, as a diploma grad, I was able to enter with junior standing. Most schools back east and even here in Washington State, want you to repeat many of the classes you already have. I would expect this for diploma classes (we were enrolled as non matriculated students in a local college. We earned 30 college credits for our sciences classes and some humanities), but not for actual college classes that you have credit for.

Cal State Long Beach, bless their heart, did not make me re- take my diploma classes. I was not given college for the nursing classes, but I was not made to repeat them. Also, Long Beach Memorial, where I used to work, now has an on site BSN program for their nurses.

Anyway, I am pro BSN, and I would go that way. I would recommend Cal State Long Beach in a heart beat. I seem to remember that, at least when I was in school there, they had a high passing rate for their generic students. I was a returning RN, so it did not impact me. Just my $ 0.02. Good luck.

I am an alum of Mount St Mary's College's ADN program, which is conducted at their Doheny Campus near USC. The Chalon campus is near UCLA. It is INDEED a very good, and yet very EXPENSIVE program. However, I chose their program because at the time I held a full time job to support my son and couldn't quit my job. (though I did when I was 3/4 done). Their NCLEX pass rate is excellent and their program is top notch, with a rep to back it.

Sounds good. So you are saying that their program works well with working parents. If that is the case I am going to work on my pre-reqs for that program. I have all the information about them. I am going to look into joining the program whenmy pre-reqs are done.

Thanks

Yes, their hours are conducive to you keeping your 9-5 while you go to school. But, don't be fooled, the program is no joke relating to it's intensity. But, I GUARANTEE you will know your stuff when you finish!!
