Looking for Nursing schools in California that accept International students

Published

Hello, I'm a graduate of BSN in the Philippines batch 2012 and applied for NCLEX-RN here in California. After completing all the requirements the Ca-BRN wrote me a letter telling me that I have some deficiencies (MS, OB, Pedia and Psych) which have something to do with the concurrency issue and go back to school to complete the said deficiencies.

I asked some schools near my place. One school didn't credit all the subjects that I took which I have to go back to zero and other schools I'm still waiting for them to call back to meet with the counselor about my situation.

While waiting I want to ask if anyone knows some nursing schools that is accredited by the CA-BRN that accepts foreign students to enroll just the deficiencies. Thank you in advance to anyone who will reply to this message :)

I am BSN, RN here in NJ. I had my BSN taken in the Philippines. I was trying to transfer my license to CA and they sent me the deficiency letter last Sept 2014 with 3 years deadline. Can anyone advise me what to do? I am planning to move to CA next year. And I am starting to search for schools that would accept me.

Would it be better to do the MSN instead rather than completing the deficiency courses? I am so confused. Please advise. Thank you in advance!

Hi,

I would just like to ask if you chose the MSN instead of taking the deficiencies through BSN schools?

We are sort of on the same boat since I also do have an out-of-state RN license for New Mexico living in CA. I'm just wondering if which one is better. Thanks

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

They look at the education that initially qualified you for licensing which is your BSN. A MSN program is specialized and would not fulfill the requirements of the deficiencies

I am a 2010 BSN graduate from the Philippines. On my application for licensure by examination, I was instructed by the California Licensing boards to take OBGYN theory and clinical to be eligible to take licensure exam in California. Do you know schools that accept internationally educated nurses into their nursing classes? I am from the Bay area so if possible I want to go to the nearest one. So far, Fresno City College, Samuel Merritt University and Evergreen Valley College are the most probable schools I might go to next year.

Thank you in advance.

Hello guys! Just wondering how you're all doing? Were you guys able to take deficiency courses yet? Can you give me updates please? Thank you!

Unitek College in Fremont offers OB class for international students. its quite expensive..but they dont have waitlist. goodluck!

I tried calling Unitek College. They said they have a wait list already as if now. :(

Were on the same boat. Were you able to find a school?

This is very typical that once a school is posted, that the wait list starts.

It's much better to find the school yourself and get enrolled first.

Remember that there's probably close to several thousands alone from the PH applicants not including the thousands of others from the others countries as well, looking for the same courses.

So by the time, a school is posted, it just floods the waiting list pool. The priority will always go to those already enrolled in their nursing program as a regular student.

That's why you only see 1-2 spots for the internationals for those needing just the two courses and up to 30 but that's done only in limited time periods (usually the summer break sessions).

There's only so much money the schools can spend on instructors and classroom size. There's even a more limited clinical hospital preceptors that will allow for their budget, a double whammy.

Try Samuel Merrit University. I got in and was done last December. It's based on random selection and thankfully I got selected. The program is worth it as I've learned so much with regards to the nursing profession here.
