Longest Shift You've Worked

Nurses General Nursing

As nurses, there may be times we are required to work long days. The other day, I successfully worked my first 23 hour shift.

What is the longest shift you've ever worked?

Also, if a patient responds better to a different nurse, then I look incompetent as a manager. Managers need to be successful with all patients.

No. Not true.

Good luck. Take care. Thoughts and prayers.

New record for me was set today.  I worked only from 7am-4pm.  This is my shortest shift in over a year or two.

Got a call from work about a problem a patient was having.  I suppose people weren't expecting I would be gone at 4pm.  I basically just told them what to do/who to call and am letting them take it from there.  I figure someone else can figure it out.   With that said, I've set my phone on Do Not Disturb so I can have an evening of peace

Managed to only work 10 hours today.  But, there was an instance where I tried to delegate but I don't think I was successful.  There was a care conference today during which family requested staff receive training using a mechanical lift and repositioning in a Broda chair.  I mentioned that I would be happy to notify and have our staff educator follow up with this.  It seems as if this was not a good suggestion as the social worker was quick to add, "Or SilverBells may also be able to help" when others present seemed alarmed.  In other words, it's pretty much expected that I will be completing this task, even though our educator would be the better person to do so.  So, it's not like I do not try to delegate.  It's just that when I do, I receive push back, so my workload keeps piling up.

Delegating isn't something you try.  When someone brazenly volunteers your services, you assertively refuse.  "No, it won't be me, I'm afraid.  It will be the staff educator."  Say it with authority.  Don't add "OK?"  Don't smile, giggle nervously or argue.  Walk away.

Do not allow your time to be structured by a **** *** social worker, of all things.

It seems as if delegating tasks involving staff or patient education is not going to go over too well.  I'm generally met with subtle disapproval when I do so.

Please don't let "subtle disapproval" cow you.  Flaming arrows shot into your office?  Maybe.  Subtle disapproval?  No.

Is it wrong that I did not respond to my workplace when they were short this weekend? I had other things I was wanting to do.  I've also gotten into the habit of basically making my weekends off-limits since I feel I should at least have 2 days out of the week for something other than work.   I feel as if I already put in enough time Monday through Friday as it is.  I feel bad that my colleague went in, but I also feel as if that was his own decision as well.  I don't know.  I also don't want to be seen as a slacker or not a team player.  Thoughts?

You have gotten tons of thoughts and advice on this already; asking for more at this point is just further attention seeking.

I will follow the lead of the other poster and say: good luck, take care, thoughts and prayers.

SB - sorry, but there's no way for us to validate your postings. They're just more 'you said, you said' postings. Oh, you said went home at 4:30?!?!?! So you said, you said, you said. How can I believe it? All along it's been pretty much you SAYING one thing, but you doing as you pleased.

Wishing you well. I will continue to think of you when I pop open a diet Pepsi.
