I am starting school in a few days, and my commute is 67 miles each way with some traffic. I am looking at getting a medical terminology audio cd just to keep things fresh in my head. Does anyone have any suggestions on any other subjects that might be good to brush up on during my long, boring commute? Thanks in advance everyone!

With your instructor's permission, record your lectures. Then get a transmitter that will let you play your mp3 player through your car stereo. You can use that on any audio device that has an audio headphone jack including digital or tape recorders: that way you can listen to class lectures while you're driving.

You can get transmitters at WalMart or Target for around $20-40. Look in the mp3 player accessory section.

If your instructor doesn't permit you to record lectures, or in my case, your instructor is so monotone you would fall asleep listening to them while driving (lol), instead I record myself reading over my notes from class. That way I can put emphasis on what is really important and there aren't any side conversations going on. I put mine on my mp3 player and that way I can hook it up to my car and listen then, or I can listen to my notes while grocery shopping, working out, etc. You could easily burn your recorded lectures/notes onto a CD and listen in your car as well though!

Great ideas, I am not a tech guy but it sounds easy enough to manage this feat. Thanks to both of you!

Learn another language. In my area, Spanish would be the best thing to learn, followed by arabic and mandarin chinese. If you can conduct a basic assessment in Spanish, in my area anyhow, that could be the reason we hire you over any other newbies.

I would look into a wired mp3 to CD converter before a transmitter. The transmitters have a reputation for being pretty unreliable. Burning CD's would also bypass the reception issues, but the capacity of an mp3 player would allow you to have more content at your fingertips.

Went to radio shack today and looked at a recorder that you could then transfer info. to your PC and burn to a CD. I think thats the cheapest, and as others have said most reliable way to listen to the lectures/notes. All great info thanks everyone!

I would advise you to buy the Outlander series (Diana Gabaldon). You will spend enough hours in class/studying. Enjoy your commute listening to some good historical fiction. :)

If you have an MP3 player and want something medical, you might also consider some of the free podcasts on offer at iTunes. There are a ton of them--something for all tastes. Some are actual lectures from various nursing schools; some are by doctors, paramedics, nurses and offer extra or new information on a variety of clinical subjects. Just search iTunes using words like "nursing" or "nurse" or "medic" or "surgery" or "med-surg," etc. You'll find a lot of great stuff. If you like a lecture/podcast, you can usually subscribe so that you automatically get new episodes downloaded to your computer when you open up iTunes. I luv 'em!

Hope this helps.

I recommend the Outlander series as well! The main character, Claire, is a WWI nurse and gets sent back in time to the 1700's. I especially loved the nursing descriptions! Very interesting.

I drive an hour and a half to school each day and this is what keeps me going! The best stuff to download is under iTunes U because they're mostly evidence based episodes from regulated institutions, which my instructors love

I am loving the podcasts so far. There is one I am stuck to that seems associated with this website. Thanks for the great ideas everyone, your all so helpfull!
