Okay, for all of us that did not get into the Lone Star Fall 2010 program and are trying again for the Spring...here we go again.
I'm retaking AP2 this summer (I have a B so now I want an A) to increase my points. After that I just don't know what else to do because I have all co-reqs completed, CPR done and Immunizations done. What are your plans to increase your chances of getting in for the Spring?
k - got my CPR cert on Saturday, am now signed up for Micro CE in Fall and Pharmacology online for Fall. Got all my shots and physical on Friday. Now, all I have to do is take HESI and finish my summer classes and pray that I get in! It's coming down to the wire! So excited!
Liveelou, Where do you PCA at? What types of things do you usually do? I'm probably going to have to go this route starting January because I won't be able to handle my full time job downtown AND nursing school. Sounds like a great flexible work schedule and benefits to boot!! Awesome! Where did you get your CNA cert?

kmbrlyw - Why don't you sign up for the Micro CE refresher that starts in July? It only lasts 4 wks. I would hate for you to do what I did...I waited in the Spring '10 semester for a CE class to go only to find out that they required a minimum sign up (at N. Harris). The one that just started at the beginning of June at N.Harris had to have at least 7-10 students...and the last day to sign up they had exactly 7. Just be careful and ask questions at the CE desk (go in rather than talk on the phone because most of them don't have any idea what they're talking about).
I am working as a PCA right now. You have to have your Certified Nurse Aide to get hired as a PCA, or if you have been in nursing school for 1 or 2 (I can't remember) semesters they will hire you. They usually like someone with experience, but I think you will have a better chance since you're going into nursing school. PCA's with little or no experience will make anywhere from 8.00-9.50 an hour at a hospital. If you work nights there is a $1.25 evening differential and a $1.50 night differential. If you work part time or full time you are eligible for benefits and they have really good insurance. I'm working full time right now, but I plan to go part time or PRN once I get into nursing school. Let me know if you have any other questions :)
What is your typical work schedule and what hospital do you work at? Also, what types of things do you do throughout the day? I know that if I do go into the nursing program that the advisor mentioned a 2 week class typically held during Christmas break that would certify me as a CNA. Thanks much for your help :)
Jenniferneedlenazi,
I wish I could take it with you all in July but I am taking 4 classes already! Don't think I could handle that on top of what I've already got. The lady (again this is on the phone so don't know if it is true or not) said they never have trouble filling their Fall/Spring CE classes because I asked her the same thing. She said they only ever have trouble filling summer sessions. We'll see.
To all of you who are asking about PCA work: I work on the Med/Surg floor and I usually do vitals, blood sugars, change diapers, give baths, help patients to the restroom, apply telemetry (heart moniter), help transfer patients, any little things the nurse needs you to do, you can also take a 4 hour class to be able to draw blood. You can be hired as a student professional nurse after your first semester of nursing school and you get paid a little bit more than a PCA and can usually do a little bit more stuff. Or if you want to get your CNA you can get it through CE at Lone Star. My mom just finished the class and it was 8 weeks 2x a week. It costed a little over $500 I think. I actually got certified in high school and it was a lot cheaper. If you have any more questions just let me know! :)
Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't replied lately. We went on our last family vacation for the next two years to Disneyworld and it was so much fun! Now I need to get to studying for the HESI and worrying about applying to the program. Back to reality. UGH!
Anyways, I don't start the summer Pharm class until the second summer session in July but I will definitely let you all know how it goes. I am also taking my PE class along with the CNA course at Cy-Fair all at the same time. I am starting to feel a bit overwhelemed already but hopefully I will be able to get through it. For those that asked, the CNA program is a 5 week course on MTTH evenings (lecture - still not sure when clinicals are) that was $508 to register (not including books) plus what I had to pay for my background check, plus I have to bring a money order (I forgot how much) to pay for the person who comes down to proctor the state test. I can let you all know how that goes as well once I start it in July if you want.
Is anyone going to the Information Session at Cy-Fair tomorrow afternoon? Also, who still needs to get their CPR cert and does anyone know of a good place to get it? I would really like to get it out of the way as soon as possible.

Yes to my knowledge those are the only campuses that accept nursing students for the spring.
