Lone Star Spring 2011

Published

Okay, for all of us that did not get into the Lone Star Fall 2010 program and are trying again for the Spring...here we go again.

I'm retaking AP2 this summer (I have a B so now I want an A) to increase my points. After that I just don't know what else to do because I have all co-reqs completed, CPR done and Immunizations done. What are your plans to increase your chances of getting in for the Spring?

It says that Fall 2010 is the first go-round with it. I'm like you...I don't mind online, but when it comes to saving someone's life or giving medicine I would like to have a prof there to ask. I'm a question-asker...I'm sure the advisors cringe when I email them wanting an appointment. But I'd rather be safe than sorry and misinformed!

Oh...here's what I noticed while snooping around the NH Nursing department...

Nursing Program News (4/7/10)

The LSC-North Harris Basic Track cut off for 2010 was ~11.27.

Interesting...that means the students had an 81.75 on the HESI

Okay - now I called the nursing department at LSC CyFair and the nursing department said it DOES count! She is just verifying for me with one other person and then I am going to sign up. Sorry for the confusion. I can understand the two girls at admissions not knowing what they were talking about when I went in on Saturday....but, the advisor at Tomball is the surprising one....he was SSOOOOOO knowledgeable on all the other requirements, etc.! I'm really surprised at the bad info on the CE class, though. And, I apologize for the alarm I caused here.

I will definitely let you know if I find out anything else. But, looks like it should be a go now.

So, Micro CE and Pharm online for Fall! And, provided I get accepted for Spring, I should be good to go!

Hey Michelle-

Yes, I am signed up for the N. Harris Pharm class instead of the Kingwood. My work is about 2 miles from the NH campus, so I figured that when I have to go to the classroom I can bolt out of work and go. I had already emailed the lady at N. Harris and I found the books on ebay for $10 and the Dosage Calculations for $6!! I emailed the lady for the 6wk summer class and asked her which books were required and they are not the same as N. Harris. I don't understand why all the programs can't use the same book...and older editions at that! The Kingwood prof doesn't have any reviews on the rating site because I think she's new. There is another prof that teaches Pharm and Psych (I think) and she doesn't have the best reviews (Kingwood). Hopefully the Tues pm class will be good...my friend is signed up for that class, I'll have to tell him to be on the look-out for you! His wife went through the program about 3 years ago (when it was only MW)

Yay for the last week of your refresher! Just one more thing to check off your list. I talked with CyFair about the Micro refresher and they said that they would like to have at least 5 people in order to have the class. I looked today and 3 people are signed up already...so if I sign up and you do as well, we will have our 5 people!! I really just want to have Pharm to concentrate on in the fall so I can gear up for, HOPEFULLY, the spring!!

Good luck with 2314...if it's the same guy, then you will be fine! I almost took him there but then that lady came up for the minimester and I couldn't refuse since HCC would be out-of-district for me.

kyla.ann - have you signed in to your class yet?? Maybe you can show us your syllabus?!

Do you know anything about the Tomball pharm professor (name is an alcholic bev ;))? That is the 6-9 class. I'm most likely going to stick w/ the Kingwood class though.

It looks like there will be over 5 people for the CE course. !!

And are you 100% sure the classes are MTW? I emailed someone but haven't heard back. I have to go to KW today, but later and I'm not sure the dept. will be open.

Kim, what Pharm class are you signed up for in the fall?

kim - Did you mean that you are going to do CE Micro for Summer (July 19-Aug 20...Cyfair)?

Remember that each campus is different when it comes to CE enrollment. I registered this past Jan. for the CE Micro class at NH and there was only a few that registered. Then the day before it was supposed to start (2 wks after regular classes), they told me the class wasn't going to go because not enough people signed up. So I was stuck not getting in a regular credit class and having to wait for a CE class to have enough enrollment.

I called CyFair and asked them how many students they would take and they said they would like to have at least 5. (There is 3 signed up now, I haven't registered yet and mks1014 will prob sign up as well...we could help each other!)

When I talked with NH, they require at least 7-10 minimum...they just had a class start on June 1 and it had exactly 7 people. And the CE people at the front desk are NOT helpful at all...I had to email and call and eventually go up to the campus and talk to somebody personally. They really don't have it together and definitely don't know what they're talking about...they like to pass the buck A LOT!

Michelle-

There aren't any reviews on that "alcoholic beverage!" I haven't heard of her or any scuttlebutt. Are you close to there or what area do you live in?

The MWF is what the advisor wrote on my paper...now if that's what it is for sure, I have no idea. But I did ask her when she wrote it if it was 3x/wk and she said yes.

The department should be open since summer school started today...but I would imagine you would need to get there before 5ish?? Just to make sure somebody is there. Sometimes that Valerie gal isn't at the front desk to answer any questions and it's hard to get a hold of ANYONE with information!!

Let me know what they say!!

I stopped by the office and was able to ask someone about the evening program. She said it is twice a week, but it might be MT or TW or MW based on what is available when you register!!!

jennifer, i'm not super close to kingwood, but the drive isn't bad at all w/o traffic. i don't think i can swing the wed. afternoon one b/c of work.

That's great news! Now I feel really mis-informed from my advisor and sheepish  But at least that's 1 less day to worry about! I sure wish she wouldn't have written that on my paper, but I'm glad you asked someone and actually got to talk with a person.

I suppose we can triple-check when we go to the July info session and press them for a positive schedule.

Can you believe application period is 1 month away??!

I read a few pages back someone commented on the NH cutoff...am I correct that the only campuses that accept students in the spring semester are Kingwood and CyFair? I just want to make sure my information is correct!

I don't know about all of you guys, but I am getting really anxious for the application period to open up.:uhoh3: I feel like I've been waiting for this forever.

Anybody know how much Patient Care Assistant's make? I was thinking about getting into this until I get my RN. I see they work 12 hour shifts like nurses do. Would be good experience no doubt.

I am working as a PCA right now. You have to have your Certified Nurse Aide to get hired as a PCA, or if you have been in nursing school for 1 or 2 (I can't remember) semesters they will hire you. They usually like someone with experience, but I think you will have a better chance since you're going into nursing school. PCA's with little or no experience will make anywhere from 8.00-9.50 an hour at a hospital. If you work nights there is a $1.25 evening differential and a $1.50 night differential. If you work part time or full time you are eligible for benefits and they have really good insurance. I'm working full time right now, but I plan to go part time or PRN once I get into nursing school. Let me know if you have any other questions :)
