Lone Star Spring 2011

Published

Okay, for all of us that did not get into the Lone Star Fall 2010 program and are trying again for the Spring...here we go again.

I'm retaking AP2 this summer (I have a B so now I want an A) to increase my points. After that I just don't know what else to do because I have all co-reqs completed, CPR done and Immunizations done. What are your plans to increase your chances of getting in for the Spring?

Well I guess that makes quite a bit of us with kiddos! I'm a single mom with an almost 5 year old little boy! I plan on not working though through nursing school. Just depends on finances, of course!

jpinkard - I am a single mom as well...5 1/2 yr old daughter. She starts kindergarten in August. I work part time but I still don't know how I'm going to manage burning the candle at both ends.

Sometimes coming to work is my study time :D so I can get a lot of work done here, but there are typically 2 VERY BUSY weeks out of the month. I just finished one of those weeks and while I was in the midst of it I was wondering how I would be able to do it all!!!

Jennifer, I'm not sure if I will be taking that class or not, b/c I can take CPR through my job. Ok, I will sign up for beach lady at the end of the year :). Thanks for your help!

Is anyone else signed up for the Fall Pharm class at Kingwood from 7-9pm on Tuesdays? Jennifer, I know your friend is, but was wondering if anyone else is?

I forgot that you have the perks of working in the health field! That's makes it much more convenient.

And my job is my study ground as well...makes it nice.

Now...if you make less than a 99% in Lifespan, you will be reprimanded :lol2:

I'm also curious about anyone in Pharm now...details details!

I am actually quitting my job to get my CNA cert and because I have one more stinky credit (PE) before I can get the full points and the only time I could take a class was during the day. Once I get my CNA I am hoping to be able to find a job PRN or something so I can still earn somewhat of an income while I am going through the program (even though it won't be much at all).

I'm starting to stress about this coming summer II semester. I am taking PE, Pharm and my CNA course all at the same time. What was I thinking?!?!

jenniferneedlenazi-Trust me! I feel your pain! My son was supposed to start Kindergarten this year but I decided last minute that bc he turns 5 two weeks before the cutoff I will put him in a "bridge" program to better prepare him for Kindergarten. I have to pay for that though! Eeeh. The sacrifices we make for our children.

I'm going to try to save up enough money to have during nursing so I can avoid working and focus on school as well as my little one! I plan on doing the day program since he'll be in class during the day. I focus much better during the day, and I'm rendered useless at night! :)

Kyla.ann - oh my gosh, busy summer! Are you signed up for the Pharm at NHarris or Kingwood? I emailed the Nharris prof and I have already bought the book for that campus otherwise I would take the Kingwood 7-9pm T class in the fall.

I looked into the CNA cert as well...is it just the 6-8wk course or do you have to do that and a lab/clinical on top of the lecture classes?

jpinkard - hey, at least you get one more semester with your baby before you start school. And with doing the day program, I feel like I will still be able to "be there" and have somewhat of some "normalcy" but I'm going to be torn with Playing and studying. EEEEEK is right!

Jenniferneedlenazi- I have the same problem now (working/playing/studying), but I think when I take work out of the mix it may be easier. Will you be applying @ Kingwood? I will be taking Pharm this summer (online); I've heard Pharm is pretty hard, well online at least. My friend had to actually sit in on lectures because she wasn't "getting it" online and she's smart! I'm also taking Micro in the fall. That's all I have left to wrap up, well besides my CPR and Shots, but that's almost done too!

jpinkard - ha! Yes, I think the work factor definitely infringes on play time!

I am applying for Kingwood. I'm done with everything except refreshing Micro and then I'm taking the hybrid class at NHarris for Pharm. I will be done with my shot series at the end of the month and then I'm doing the CPR class next Sat.

Oh dear, don't tell me that she had to sit in on lectures!! Are you taking it at NH or Kingwood? I'm trying to get the scoop on the NH prof because she does a lot of hybrid classes it seems.

I'm just really trying to enjoy our summer and have a "light" fall semester before the hustle and bustle starts.

Jenniferneedlenazi- I am taking it online through Kingwood. I bought my book when I registered a month or so ago and have been reading through it and making chapter notes just to try to get ahead of the game a bit since things are going to be so busy. I had no idea Pharm was supposed to be so difficult otherwise I probably would have taken it in class (or hybrid) during the fall.

The CNA course is about 5 weeks and yes, there is a clinical component to it that you do at the same time as lecture. We will be doing clinical in a nursing home.

At this point, I come home and play, do dinner, bath, bedtime (she still doesn't sleep through the night!!!!!), then start studying around 8pm. Somehow, my body is used to going to sleep around 11:30-12am and getting up around 6am. I don't study when she is awake on the weekends, only during naps or at night. . I'm hoping this will be sufficient time for study during nursing school (as well as my sneaky study time at work). My husband is a stay at home dad and I have been encouraging ;) him to take on a lot more of the house hold responsibilities since I don't get my baby time like he does. My hats are off to the single moms. My mom was a single mom of 2 and I admire all of her hard work. Your little ones will always remember what you have done for them!!!!!

kyla.ann - well you will have to give everyone some head's up! The NH prof told me the only time they meet in the classroom in on test days (which was about 5-6x during the semester for 5hrs) and everything else was done online. I'm nervous now, but I don't have the time to sit in the classroom with the hours they offer during the fall.

Now I may just buck-up and cut my losses on the pharm book I got for NH and join the others in the fall at night.

Thanks for the info on the CNA. I found a guy who sold me all of his nursing books and he strongly recommended that we work at least one shift as much as we could as a CNA either before we get admitted or the 1st semester we're in school. He said it helped him tremendously.

I registered for that CPR class at the same time you did, so maybe we can be partners!
