Lone Star Spring 2011

Published

Okay, for all of us that did not get into the Lone Star Fall 2010 program and are trying again for the Spring...here we go again.

I'm retaking AP2 this summer (I have a B so now I want an A) to increase my points. After that I just don't know what else to do because I have all co-reqs completed, CPR done and Immunizations done. What are your plans to increase your chances of getting in for the Spring?

jenniferneedlenazi- I will be taking it online through Kingwood. I'm a little nervous but the teacher had good reviews. I retain more and learn more in a lecture setting but didn't have any choices close to my office in the Woodlands and after work!

Michelle - ha! yes, if he is staying home, then he needs to put on his apron and start dusting!

My daughter didn't sleep through the night until almost 4 years old, so I know how it feels to open your eyes in the wee hours of the morning...sometimes several times a night.

The sneaky time helped so much for me when I was doing all of my online classes. From what I heard from this guy I bought books from...we will be swamped with busy written work.

He said the last couple semesters the profs make you turn in some NCLEX practice questions or something every week...like 200 or more questions!

I know women do it all the time, but I can't help but feel like my brain and body will be on overload

jpinkard - I'm sure you will be fine! I totally understand being in the classroom setting. I'm partial to the convenience of online, but I want to be totally prepared for caring for a patient and I'm the student with my hand up always asking questions.

Which review forum did you go to about that Kingwood prof?

jenniferneedlenazi- I go to "ratemyprofessor.com" that site has saved my life so many times! I do a little check before I register with certain teachers. :D

Thanks! That's the one I use as well...what a life saver, huh?! I didn't know if there was another one that was popular that I didn't know about.

I am not familiar with any of the KW professors. I am crossing my fingers about the TBA instructor for the Tuesday night pharm class! Jennifer, you should take that one with me! :)

jenniferneedlenazi - I have also heard that having your CNA helps but after the first semester, even the ones with a CNA are on about the same level as those without. I am getting it 1) To hopefully help with my nerves during the first semester. I am painfully shy and get really nervous around other people. (you will get to see that in our CPR class. LOL!) 2) To have a way to make money while in NS and 3) to network :)

I check all my profs with this site as well! We must be taking it with the same teacher as mine got some excellent reviews on there too. Maybe you and I need to form a study group or something this summer for Pharm? Your little boy is close in age to my oldest daughter so we could always get them together to entertain each other while we study. :D

kyla.ann - You and I are in the same Shy boat. I'm really quiet but I tend to talk aimlessly when I'm nervous...how about in CPR class you and I just have an understanding that our quietness is nothing personal that way we don't have to feel uncomfortable with that silence!! ;)

Michelle - I am seriously thinking of changing classes. I am just wondering if there is a lab portion that isn't listed yet on the class schedule. Most all of the other Pharm classes are around 5hrs, so I wonder if the lab is from 5-7pm and then the lecture is 7-9?? Anyone know??

I emailed the prof for summer pharm asking her which book is needed and if she, by chance, knew who would be teaching the night class for fall. I haven't heard anything back yet, but I will post when she-and if she-responds.

Hi guys. Someone was asking about pharm...

I'm in it now (just finished week 2). I take the online class through Kingwood with professor Loftin. So far it's been great. I really like the book and think it's very easy to understand (well, at least compared to some of the other nursing books I've flipped through!).

We have 3 discussion boards and a test every week. True, it is over like 15 chapters but the chapters are small. The discussion boards have been pretty difficult but the information IS in the book, you just have to look. The tests are very difficult but there is ample time to complete them if you've looked over the chapters beforehand.

Given there's still 3 weeks to go I have a strong A in the class, have been enjoying it and learning a lot!

I say don't stress over the class one bit, it is not that difficult (and I'm not super smart or anything...trust me!!! lol), you'll all do amazingly!

I highly recommend professor Loftin, she's been very helpful.

Sorry for rambling so much!

Ohh, also I heard that if you've got your CNA you do not have to take the fundamentals of nursing (NURS 1172) class! So that even more makes it worth your while! **if this is true...can anyone confirm this?**

I am thinking about taking it before I start nursing school also but I am due with a baby in August so I am trying to take it one thing at a time...

jenniferneedlenazi - Whew! Glad I am not the only one. :p I'm sure we will get along just fine. :) Too bad you aren't applying to Cy-Fair.

Speaking of, it seems like most on here are trying to get in to Tomball. Who is going for Cy-Fair? I can't be the only one.

bugalove - Thanks for the heads up on the Pharm class. What book are you using? I have a different instructor. I wonder if our books are the same. So far the first few chapters in my book seem pretty easy but I haven't gotten into any of the drug classes or anything yet. (just reading on my own) I'm glad it isn't as difficult as everyone makes it seem. Do you have to take your tests at an assesment center or at home? I haven't heard that about being able to skip Nursing Fundamentals if you have your CNA. I will ask when I go back up to the school to see. I wouldn't neccessarily say that getting the CNA is worth it just to skip that class though. The cost of the CNA course is about $700 after all the fees and the Nursing course wouldn't even touch that! It definitely adds a bonus on top of other reasons though. ;)

kyla- We are using the book "Focus on Nursing Pharmacology, 5th Edition"...I did the same thing as you, I started reading it before the semester started to get a heads up. Everything is online in my class. I take the tests from my home computer.

I am applying to both Kingwood and CyFair but my first choice is Kingwood.

How many of you all have already taken the HESI? I figured that I'll need a 90 on the reading comprehension portion to have any confidence about getting in due to the high cut offs they've had previously. I am taking my HESI the week of July 12th.
