Okay, for all of us that did not get into the Lone Star Fall 2010 program and are trying again for the Spring...here we go again.
I'm retaking AP2 this summer (I have a B so now I want an A) to increase my points. After that I just don't know what else to do because I have all co-reqs completed, CPR done and Immunizations done. What are your plans to increase your chances of getting in for the Spring?
kyla.ann - Yes! We will be just fine :) Unfortunately, CyFair is a bit too far for me. NHarris campus is 4 miles from home and Kingwood is about 10miles.
bugalove - I do believe that if you have your CNA or "some" health care background you could be exempt from 1172. When I went for my meeting with the advisor, the page she gave me (that had the scoring chart on it) showed at the bottom some info about the 1172 class. Basically it stated that 1172 would need to be taken either in December or January before classes start.
I took the HESI during the LVN application period. I stressed about it even though I knew I had another shot if I didn't do well on it the 1st time. I wouldn't stress, just manage your time and do the reading part 1st. I did the math part 1st and then I was pooped by the time I got to the reading...and my eyes were going cross-eyed!
The good thing about it is when you're finished, the computer shows you your score.
bugalove - I am applying to Kingwood only...so putting all of my eggs in 1 basket, I hope I get in. I will be applying with an 11.652.
I made a 91.3 on the HESI and I only missed 3 questions out of 55. I have no idea how they score that thing and why the score is the way it is because using a regular scoring system, I should have made like a 94.5 with only missing 3.
They give you a print-out when you are finished and shows you which questions you missed, but it doesn't really help with the scoring system. I left out of there scratching my head wondering how the score was calculated. So...if anyone knows how the score is calculated, let me in on the secret formula!
Jennifer, some of the questions on the test are "experimental" questions which are not scored. They are basically questions they are trying out for future tests. NCLEX has some too. Maybe you got a few of those in your test which is skewing your results? Still a pretty good score though!
Well, that explains some of those "questions with multiple, could-be" answers. Thanks...I just hope my score gets me a spot because I don't really want to take the test again. I didn't study anything but the math part because I really couldn't have studied for the reading part.
But, had I known what to expect I would have attempted to study those tricky question types.
Jennifer- I do not think you'll have any problem at all with that score! I am applying to both but very much want into the Kingwood program! I'm taking the HESI in 3 weeks. Any suggestions you can give me to help study for the English portion?
I used these websites to help!
Michelle - Um, I got the one that had these authors: Berdell R. Funke, Christine L. Case, Gerard J. Tortora -9th ed.
And this is what she responded to me when I asked her what we were going to use: "The notes for this class are fully online. You can chose any Micro textbook. See if you can get an old version of Microbiology by Tortora & Tortora."
I have no idea why she wrote "Tortora & Tortora."
bugalove - those are some good review websites that michelle suggested. I didn't know of any practice websites or I would have practiced. I would just say to not read anything more than what the question is asking? I don't know if that makes sense, but the questions are direct answers...but sometimes the answer choices have at least 2 that are similar sounding or written that can make you think twice. Or in my instance - scratch my head and say, "why would they put these answers when both could be correct depending on your own opinion? Or - How do I know what exactly the author is suggesting?"
Jennifer is very right about the reading questions. I tend to over analyze too much. On the reading you CANNOT do that. Go with you gut instinct, don't second guess yourself. Most of the questions have two right answers, so don't OVERTHINK it. :)
Also, I believe my scores were 96 on Math and 95 on Reading, all I studied were copies of a HESI study guide the day before the test. I have them copied on my computer and it literally had all the relative material to study. The guide has more Math than reading but it was all I used and I did well. If anyone would like these study guides I can email them to you.

bugalove- I'm taking the same Pharm class as you, and I agree it's really not too hard. In some ways it seems a little too easy. But hey, I'm not complaining.
So for all of you out there that are stressing over the Pharm class, don't stress too much. It's not that bad at all.
