Okay, for all of us that did not get into the Lone Star Fall 2010 program and are trying again for the Spring...here we go again.
I'm retaking AP2 this summer (I have a B so now I want an A) to increase my points. After that I just don't know what else to do because I have all co-reqs completed, CPR done and Immunizations done. What are your plans to increase your chances of getting in for the Spring?
Just curious to those who are in Pharm or have taken Pharm already...I am signed up for a Hybrid class at NH with an instructor that I'm trying to get the skinny on
Wondering if anyone has taken this gal and how the class is going??!
Ok so here is my venting/whiny/soapbax time for the night (after working all day and coming home and spending three hours on a OPEN BOOK test--pharmacology test, that is)
Word to the Wise: DO NOT TAKE PHARMACOLOGY ONLINE!!I guess the only person I can be mad at, at this point is myself. 5 week ONLINE pharm class=HELL. I'll paint you my pretty picture as a forewarning for all who really want to learn the material. As you all know, this course is a nursing course and is one (of many) important building blocks to nursing. Most of us are taking this course before we enter the program. Let me put it this way, try reading 200+ pages of text, no lecture, and then taking a test that is approximately 40 random questions over the material (all in a week, mind you). The textbook is wordy and entirely too lengthy and without supplementary material to learn the concepts, you will be lost.
Ok, enough complaining. LOL. I decided to solve this problem myself, after discovering the mess I got myself into. I can't drop the class and retake it another time, so I ordered a bunch of books to "teach" myself pharmacology (or the basics at least). I know without a doubt I will pull an "A" or "B" in this course, but my biggest concern is not the grade I make, as it really doesn't matter if you didn't learn the material. Same thing goes for nursing school, I suppose. Good grades are great, but if you only got those good grades by "memorizing" and storing that information for short-term use only, then how will that benefit us in the long run?
Just a wake up call for me, I'm so blessed that I will not be working during nursing school (if all goes as planned).
Not to mention, I'll have lab/lecture/study groups etc. to supplement my textbook :). As it stands now...this is not the case. Just thought I'd put the word out (not as discouragement, but as a warning to people like me who can't learn that way and don't have the time to cram a class like that). Can't wait to get my books and really start learning this stuff.
I'm sure there are others who truly enjoyed their pharm online class and that is great! Just not for me :)
I don't think online is the issue, I think it is the 5 week duration. UT Arlington offers 12 week online pharm and patho classes.
You are probably right, I retain a lot more information in lecture vs. reading the material alone. I tend to do better if I look over the material, attend class, and then review what I learned...this 5 weeks thing is killing me :) The material is very interesting though!

Can I just give a big 'ole AMEN to this!! I am in the same pharm class and I have to agree, whatever you do, DO NOT take it in only 5 weeks. There is WAY too much information to cover in only 5 weeks and if you really want to LEARN and not just MEMORIZE then it is impossible to do it in a 5 week course. I am sure that a slower paced online course will be fine, or even better, a hybrid.
I have a feeling I really hurt myself doing this and might even take it again when I get into Cy-Fair's program.
Just as an extra tidbit - My CNA instructor who has been a nurse for 20+ years was SHOCKED when I told her I was taking Pharm without having had any other nursing classes at all. She was really suprised they just let anyone take it without actually being in a nursing program.
From what I've heard, that is why Cy-fair chooses not to let anyone except nursing students into their Pharm classes. I was told at info session that you really need to have taken a couple of your nursing classes to really understand and retain what you learn in Pharm. Thats why I choose not to take it this fall at a sister campus.
I have an appt with someone at the college in 2 weeks, but I have a feeling that they won't be able to tell me what I should do either. I am not really sure where I messed up. Several of the answers had more than one correct answer. I guess that I didn't pick the best correct answer!
