London nurses--are you okay?

Published

My husband (from Sheffield) are looking at the riots in London, gob-smacked. Anyone in London working in the hospitals on this board or elsewhere in London? I don't know how the shifts work there, if you have evening shifts from 2300-0700 or what have you, but I hope you are all safe!

Interseting that you chose a CEO, who probably has a Masters degree , rather than compare police salaries with people with a more similar educational level, such as nurses.

My point was that its wrong for a CEO running a single hospital to earn more than a Prime Minister running a country.

Do you agree?

And a policeman carried huge responsiblities, in the same way that all keyworkers do. Setting one profession against another is not constructive but divisive. Police pay is not huge compared to those sitting in NHS managment offices, yet the individual responsbility they carry is.

Maybe to make it clearer I should have said that policemen get paid ridiculously high salaries compared to public service workers with similar educational requirements and responsibilities eg nurses then you wouldn't be comparing the Prime Minister and hospital CEOs, which bears no relevance to the discussion here.

As regards

I'm not sure what the police could have done to prevent a hit and run though.

You talk about tactics for criminal behavior, but that is exactly what the police are not allowed to do.

if the police had used their approved tactics for criminal behaviour (which were appropriate as looting is criminal behaviour) then the yobs in the other cities would have seen that the police were not ***** footing around and maybe thought twice about kicking off.

Of course the police are allowed to use tactics for criminal behaviour- for example if the armed response units believe that someone has a gun and is going to shoot then they're allowed to shoot.

It's about analysis of the situation and using the appropriate tactic. The police admit that they used the wrong tactics!

People complain that not enough was done and then people would complain that too much was done. Someone can't do right for wrong.

That is exactly my point.

Already there have been just as many complaints about the police action as there have about the lack of police action.

But we are not dealing with rational, moral people here. This riot was a herd of out of control, greedy, selfish and immoral animals, who could not be reasoned with.

But because some were as young as eleven years old, the police would have been condemned for any aggressive tactics they employed.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

It wold not happen in any other country, but sadly the goverment's soft approach has caused this anarchy, and then they fail to arm or support the police adequately to fight it. As I said in an earlier post, there were not even eough stab vests to go around, let alone weapons or additional manpower. WIth failing resources and support, the police have an impossible job.

And as for their salaries, I am more than happy to have them earn more then me. I could not do their job. I'm in A&E and working alongside them much of the time, and I am truly grateful for their presence.

I agree dammed if they do or dammed if they don't. My husband was in the specials for a few years before we moved and had several friends in as well and the police certainly get accused of a lot of stuff that is totally wrong. Doesn't matter who you are I see the race card used.

Do I miss the UK at times yes but to be really honest with myself I love where I am in Canada and love the fact I don't have to worry (in my neck of the woods) about property being stolen

I live in London just 30 minutes away from where the main riot started in Tottenham.I don't understand people trying to justify the riots. They were a criminal act in the name of a known drug dealer.

During the riots my teenager children and I all slept in one room.

I was going to my management placement (final placement) in the morning leaving the kids at home as here in UK is half term.

I am a single mum,a student nurse (qualifying September 2011),with two teenagers who wouldn't dream of rioting or stealing, because I will personally hand them in to the police, if they ever did.

Unfortunately bad parenting is the main cause for these riots.......where were the parents of the 11 yrs old rioting? What have these parents taught their children? It is a disgrace what is going on in major cities of England.

I can't wait to move away from this country as soon as possible. London is a "living hell".

There was an inteview on TV last night, the mom of a kid arrested for looting. She said that she "could not be expected to look after her kids all the time".

She doesn't work, and the kid that was arrested was 12 years old.

Until people stop living their lives like its the Jeremy Kyle show, (thats the current UK Oprah for those back in the US) then nobody is ever going to wise up and take responsiblity for their actions or those of there kids.

Its all about consequences.

And a little humor in all of this -

we are in west London, and I was off last Friday so went to take a look at the riot damage in the local shopping mall. As you would expect, all the windows were boarded up, McDs was trashed, and an electronics store had been looted, and lost all its laptops, phones, etc.

But I'm sorry I had to laugh.

The other store that was looted was . . . .

Hobby craft.

I now have this mental image of a gang of masked rioters, storming the place, desperate to get their hands on a supply of

knitting wool.

He was not married, so his four kids are most likely mainained on welfare, like so many others in the UK. Have you ever met this man, and if not, what information do you have to form your opinion?

Skylark, I've agreed with a lot of what you've said, but assuming his kids were supported on the social just because he wasn't married is highly judgmental.

I didnt assume I said it was highly likely.

I have many friends working on Trident who tell me there is a definite "type" of person involved in this kind of crime, and they are usually NOT productive citizens.

Let's wait and see . . . .

Yes, very judgmental.

Do you think that the drug dealers are only selling to "non-productive" types too?

How about the "city types" that like their tickle of whatever on a regular basis. They're keeping the "non productive" types in business!

You clearly have a very strong bias towards the police because so you have freinds who are policemen.

You say you couldn't do their job but many couldn't/wouldn't do yours, so that really doesn't justify anything.

Those are both highly judgemental statements.

When you say I have "a very strong bias towards the police", what exactly do you mean?

Bias towards something/someone implies a negative attitude towards another or opposite thing.

Would you care to explain what you mean by your comments please?

Do you have a bias towards nurses because you know some?

Would that mean you have a bias against patients?

I'd say it's more like Springer!

There was a lot of humour in the midst of all this. Our "criminals" doing things like:

1. Politely Queuing to loot (how very British!)

2. Posing with said loot on facebook as their profile picture.

3. The Girl arrested for looting curry's who was arrested IN HER CURRYS UNIFORM.

4. Looting from Lidl, Poundland and similar (I mean, come off it.... I can buy BAGS of stuff from Lidl for about a fiver....)

You just have to laugh.... otherwise you would cry!
