Liquid Gold

Published

Alright go ahead and laugh but I am darned proud of myself tonight/ morning whatever!!!!

I stayed a couple extra hours to help out the 11-7 shift. The nurse that works over on my unit called me up ( I was on another unit) And asked if I wanted to put in a foley! I said I guess so but I'm not good at it!!! I have NEVER been able to insert a foley...

Well I inserted and I got it the first time and I hit liquid gold!!!!!!!! I was so happy.... Everyone else on 11-7 was happy for me too and laughing!!!!!! What a good end to a crappy night/morning

Foleys have little to no discomfort once they're in, but the going in can be pretty painful, the more tense the pt the worse it hurts. I've learned to talk my pts through the procedure, telling them to breathe deep, bear down, etc., and I'm told it helps.

I've have one twice, the first time inserted during surgery. The second was for my c-section and an OB nurse quietly told me to insist it be put in when I was numb, rather than as part of the pre-op.

OP: I know the feeling you had! I'm pretty good at foleys but when there's a difficult one and my pt is uncomfortable anyway and I'm making it worse, then it finally goes in and I see that gush of yellow........

PS in my experience, foleys are VERY uncomfortable. But that may be me....

Oh yeah it was on a female patient!!!!!!! Very amped up and anxious... I tried explaining it to my family and the bf but they just didn't get it!!!! Thanks you!!!!!!! You guys are the best, you understand the "little" victories!!!!! What would I do without you all? ;)

Congrats!!!!! Now you are ready for the contracted female. I almost died the first time I saw it done (entering from the rear). When I had to insert a foley on one of those poor, contracted little old ladies I almost freaked. But, it was pretty easy and fast.

How else are we supposed to get in if the legs are stiff and it causes pain to try and pry them open.

Turn her on her side and go in from the back side :) You may need an extra pair of hands to help, but it can be done that way with much less pain to the poor contractured person.

Congrats on that liquid gold! I so clearly remember the first female I ever cath'd and I bet you will too, hehe :)

To the OP: Cograts!

Funny story on the subject - shortly after taking report one morning, one of the CNAs came up to me and said, "can you come in and look at Mrs. ___ --she has something in her rectum". Huh?????:uhoh21: Mrs.___ is bed-ridden, PROM, how in the world could she have something in her rectum??? Wellll....lo and behold, there was an iodine swab half sticking out of her poor bunky! I was a fairly new nurse, so it was expained to me by a friend that sometimes the old timers will leave the last swab in the lady parts to insure hitting the meatus (not accidently inserting into the vag). Anyway, Mrs.____ was unable to speak, but her eyes said it all..."Thanks for getting that thing out of my butt".

Congratulations! I bet your GOLD glittered like the sun on raindrops.

Look up the "sims position" for side lying cath insertion.

Also for the larger ladies who sink down into the mattress, take a clean bedpan and put it upside down under her buttocks, that will raise her into a better position for cath.

Many of our urologists allow lidocaine gel to be used for caths. They even allow insertion of some of the gel into the meatus using a slip fit 10 cc syringe.

On males have them cough loudly right when you pass near the prostate. It helps relax it. Good as GOLD.

I understand this victory. I am a new nurse and new to the OR. It is wonderful that my patients are asleep when I have to cath them but we are on a time restraint. Everyone in the room is waiting for me to get it done and get the patient prepped. I use to panic but now I am getting use to it. CONGRATS!
