Liquid Gold

Alright go ahead and laugh but I am darned proud of myself tonight/ morning whatever!!!!

I stayed a couple extra hours to help out the 11-7 shift. The nurse that works over on my unit called me up ( I was on another unit) And asked if I wanted to put in a foley! I said I guess so but I'm not good at it!!! I have NEVER been able to insert a foley...

Well I inserted and I got it the first time and I hit liquid gold!!!!!!!! I was so happy.... Everyone else on 11-7 was happy for me too and laughing!!!!!! What a good end to a crappy night/morning

Good for you. It is the little things, isn't it?

Congratulations!! I'm not laughing, I haven't inserted a foley successfully on a real, live person yet so I'm very proud of you. :lol2:

sometimes its the little victories that mean the most....

Congrats! You didn't say if it was on a male or female. If on a female, cudos! That's one of the hardest things to do, next to IVs that is! Good Job!

OH i dont know about the hardest thingto do. Id put foley after foley in before i want to drop a NG tube. I think it has to do with how uncomfortable the NG is to the patient. Foley's are little to no discomfort.

Didn't think about an NG tube - guess I'm going from my limited exposure - 13 years in LTC and no hospital experience.

Mazel Tov and many more! I remember feeling the same way

the first time - and, frankly, lots of times thereafter when it

was a tough patient, LOL. :lol2:

WRONG!

I had one done just before my c-section when my son was born 2 years ago, and it was even worse than my recovery time afterwards. Honestly, the foley is what I remember as being the worst part. Well, all the laxatives they made me take weren't fun either, but with the foley, the nurse just kept screwing it up and it hurt so much.

Congrats Cmarie!! :D

My first two female cath attempts were hopeless failures. I can't tell you how happy I was when I finally struck gold! It was a very obese, very immobile woman, who luckily was also very patient. I was basically shooting in the dark--flashlight was not much help. I was almost ready to give up when the lady let out a small yelp, so I thought "gee I must be in the right place" and went for it.

Of course I didn't have the spec. cup ready so most of the "gold" ended up on the bed. :uhoh3: But I eventually got my sample.

Um, they can be pretty uncomfortable going in, and the more anxious the patient, the more uncomfortable. Since most of us are a little edgy when someone is messing around down there, I'd have to disagree that foley's are little to no discomfort. Not excruciating, but definitely uncomfortable.

"little to no discomfort"? Have you ever had one?

Foleys have little to no discomfort once they're in, but the going in can be pretty painful, the more tense the pt the worse it hurts. I've learned to talk my pts through the procedure, telling them to breathe deep, bear down, etc., and I'm told it helps.

I've have one twice, the first time inserted during surgery. The second was for my c-section and an OB nurse quietly told me to insist it be put in when I was numb, rather than as part of the pre-op.

OP: I know the feeling you had! I'm pretty good at foleys but when there's a difficult one and my pt is uncomfortable anyway and I'm making it worse, then it finally goes in and I see that gush of yellow........
