Lidocaine with Rocephin IM?

Just a quick question really.

I have given IM Rocephin reconstituted with saline a few times until last night my charge nurse told me to give it with lidocaine solution.

My drug book had a small part in the nursing considerations when I looked it up that the drug could be given with lidocaine if the patient was sensitive.

Just wanted to ask people if they have given this drug and what they give it with?

Noooooo.........I've given it with a 25g to babies, 27g to adults. I would use a 27 on babies but it's too long. No problems getting it through.

hi there!

does anybody here have a list of antibiotics with their diluents? i'm making a list of it for easy, quick reference about which diluent is compatible to be mixed with different antibiotics and how many ours is its stability in room temperature and in the refrigerator. if you also have a list of compatible diluents for other iv/im drugs (inotropics, antacids, etc), please share it with us. thank you very much.

I have always mixed it with lido... it's one of the most painful injections we give and that's the reason for the lido to numb the area while it goes in...if given slow im to let the lido work ... then it's not a bad shot!

That's why I use a small gauge needle, because it slows the injection rate down.

My family doc says that to give Rocephin without Lido is cruel and unusual punishment.

I have always used lido. We have to get an order for it, but I do take the time to get the order for it.

I received it IM for a resistant URI - no lidocaine and it hurts like the dickens

Geez.....your nurse was either a sadist or was mad at you!

It still hurts with the lido but it's not as bad, and it really helps with the after-injection golf-ball feeling.

I used to draw up the Lido w/an 18 ga needle, just for the speed, and give it w/a 22 ga to adults, and like Tazzi a 25 ga to small people.

if rocephin is given iv or deep im, how can someone use a 27 gau needle?

even if the adults are cachexic/emaciated, i still use a 25 gau.

but a 27?

i'm not convinced that would be a deep im for the peds population.

How about with Geodon, we use IM Geodon a lot on my unit for combative pts and they always complain of it hurting like crazy does anyone know off the top of their heads if it can be diluted in anything? (I'll look it up in my drug book in a few minutes, it's out it in the car)

Everyone Ive used Geodon on says it hurts, but then everything hurts. They are all so psychotic and combative, who can really tell.

where are tasers when we need them
