Glydo/Urojet?

In my previous job when placing catheters in conscious patients, we always preceded it with glydo (lidocaine gel)  Now our guidance is to just use the regular lubricant gel.    I asked and they said the anesthetic can mask problems with the placement.   Any ideas?

For someone with female anatomy I will use lubricant gel.

For someone with male anatomy I will always use lidocaine

females have a very short urethra to get through, men have much longer to go. If someone wants me to do it differently, they will need to show me peer reviewed evidence based research that says males are OK with just lubricant gel

The cynic in me says "sounds like someone wants to save money"

I could be wrong though?

That's an interesting observation.    Old job, everybody got it, current job, nobody gets it.    I didn't get a reason other than they didn't want to mask problems.   I guess I might understand that in older patients, but in peds, it's unlikely that there are issues.

Of course, "frugality" wouldn't surprise me.    I'll inquire further and see how it goes.

At my last job, where I worked bedside, an MD was admitted, experienced Foley insertion without lidocaine, and was so horrified by the discomfort. After he was discharged, he spearheaded the effort to have a standardized nursing order/policy/procedure that all males would have lido jelly for insertion. It was available in all the Pyxises after that ?

I think it was a cost cutting thing with my current employer, but I pushed and we have a couple of boxes of them on order now.   They won't be in for me to use on Tuesday, but should be here for the next round on Feb 17.
