Hi ! Our family will migrate to US this March 2009 bec. of my hubby's job. I am a nurse in profession and I want to know what are the procedures in acquiring license to work in Oregon. I am also searching an apartment where we can live. My husband will be working somewhere in NE Portland , Oregon. Anybody can recommend me for a site to search or a person to contact?

Does your husband's visa allow you to work? If not then there is no way you will be able to work. All requirements will be found on the board of nursing website and you need to meet requirements for foreign trained nurse. Title changed as not NCLEX requirements but licensure requirements

hi! thanks for the quick reply. Iwill be on dependent visa from my hubby when we will get in to US . He will be working in legacy health system and the good thing his employer will help me to get a job there as soon as i will be ready for work ( we have a 2 year old baby by the way).. I will see the website ASAP.

If you are coming on a dependent visa, then chances are that you are not going to be able to work under that visa. Unless it is a green card, then you are not going to be able to work.

If an H1-B visa that he is going to be under, then you will be under the H-4 visa and unable to work here. The US is under a retrogression and there are no visas for you to adjust to when you get here.

Which visa will you be on before you do a thing is going to be the most important for you to know. Dependent visa alone does not tell us anything.

One thing I want to add here. If you do discover that your visa does not allow you to work and instead you will have to wait for an employment-permissible visa. Do not fall for the traps that some immigrants have been victimized by. That is, companies willing to hire you "in waiting" for your visa. They pay you less than you should earn and often treat you poorly. Then if you complain? They suddenly turn on you and inform INS that you scammed them about your immigration status. This leaves you with a massive problem as you would most likely be deported and ineligible for immigration to the USA in the future.

I'm sick to say that this does happen in the USA and too many immigrants are victimized by it. Don't let it happen to you. If you need to earn an income while waiting for your visa to allow work legally then set up an in-home business (check with local laws to see what is permitted in the city/county/state of residence) and bear through it until the immigration process is complete.

I know it is frustrating, I had to do it on my end here in the Philippines and it was stressful and difficult, but in the end it is worth the effort.

If the visa doesn't allow them to work not sure how this advice works because on another site I go on immigration lawyers give advice that if visa doesn't allow work then working from home for someone in another country is still a no no as still classed as work

If your husband is transferring internally and the visa is a L1 then there is a possibility you can work but has to be applied for and you can only work as long as he is working, not always guaranteed that L2 can work. If at any time he looses status then so do you. If your husband is getting H1b then you can not work at all

Until you have something in hand, never assume anything. What type of visa is your husband going to be on? That will give a clue as to the type of visa that you are going to receive.

Employers do not issue visas, only the US government does.

That's why I mentioned that she should look at local laws. In some states you don't have to declare the income as a business under certain dollar amounts and certain types of services/products.

There are some creative ways that Immigrants have been able to earn an income to survive in the USA while waiting for visas and none of it has been illegal. I do not want to provide examples because they may NOT be legal to do in other parts of the country for someone who does not yet have a working visa.
