I am in the process of re-activating my LPN license. I haven't practiced nursing in 15 years but kept it active until 3 years ago. I want to go back to school to earn my RN and when I recieved the form for re-act. there is now a questions concerning DUI convictions. Between 1994 and 2000, I had 4, the last one being 11 years ago. That is a closed chapter in a bad patch of my life. Does anyone know if these will prevent me from getting my license back? I want so much to return to school. Help anyone?

I do not know anything about this type of situation. I would think, if you contacted the board of nursing and asked them, you could find out. You do not have to give them your name. Just tell them you are considering getting back into nursing and have some questions.
I hope everything works out well for you!
Thank you for your response! It is much appreciated.
Let me know how it goes. Definitely call the board, but do not give your name. Also, try posting on here asking if there are any nurses with prior DUI or in a similiar situation, and see if you cannot get more of a response. I wish, I had more info so I could help you. Come on nurses, someone out there has to be able to help.

Only the Ohio Board of Nursing can answer this question for you. My guess is that you will be able to get your license back, but you will have to agree to some sort of monitoring program for a period of time and will have a restricted license. You might want to post this question on the "Nurses and Recovery" and "Nursing Licensure with a Criminal History" forums of this website: look at the top of the page under "Nursing", then scroll down about 3/4 of the page.
Thank you all for your responses. I appreciate the info.

Moved to Nursing Licensure with a Criminal History forum. Hopefully you will get some good advice here.
Good luck!

I applied for an LPN license, was concerned about a conviction for Negligent Driving, reduced down from a DUI, I called the BON, they told me exactly what to do (write it all down, ) and then "They will look at it on acase by case basis:. It never came up again, nor on any Criminal Background checks interestingly enough.

I am not sure how your state would treat this. In the state of Florida you would most probably be directed into the IPN (intervention project for nurses)...you would have an evaluation by an addictionologist, who would direct the treatment plan-if any-for you. You would then have a contract with the IPN for monitoring, usually 2-5 years where you would be randomly tested for alcohol and etg, weekly peer meetings as well as AA, you have to divulge it to any employers and they fill out paperwork for the IPN quarterly. I am not sure what your state does, like I said, but that's Fls model in a nutshell. It sounds overwhelming at first, but it's very doable and it beats the alternative...which is not having your license....some state do not even have an alternative program and the BON just yanks their license. This is not a license on probation with the IPN...that's why the state has the alternative.
I will say that the BON would be concerned with 4 DUIs and even though the last was 11 years ago, I can't imagine any state ignoring them.
Good Luck to you.

There is no room for impossible. Then have yourself the pace of asking.
Thank you to all that have responded to my post. I did in fact send all of the court paper work and a letter explaining the circumstances to the OBON. I checked online today and my license has been re-activated!! Yea!! I can go forward with my plans for school and will now be seeking pn refreshers and work. Thanks to all again.

Congratulations, you are a perfect example of each process being unique and what goes for one doesn't go for another. Kudos to you for not throwing in the towel because of a few negative posts.
