Leaving Nursing for Another Career

Published

Has anyone thought about or actually left nursing for another career? What non-nursing career would you be interested in?

I would like to do something anatomy/lab/research related, with a predictable work environment, routine, minimal patient contact, and lots of science!

I was a librarian before I went to nursing school. I left nursing for a few years to work in retail. I loved retail, but the pay was terrible . I went back to nursing . Left and became a special education teacher for 5 years. That led to a position of school nurse. I am now retired .

Doggie Day care that caters to health care worker hours.

Same!!! My dog goes to day care twice a week and I know they make a killing. $27/dog. Capacity of 60 dogs (I asked) plus they offer hotel and grooming. *bust the calculator out* Also, low liability.

Specializes in Unit Nurse.

I'm still trying to decide what I want to do when I grow up!

Specializes in M/S, Pulmonary, Travel, Homecare, Psych..

A few years ago one of those scam job advertisements caught my attention: Love cats? Get paid for being an animal companion.

They claimed you would be paid for going to pet stores and kennels to spend 1:1 time with the animals of your choice.

I researched it and basically, it was a scam. This company was charging families and elderly people exuberant fees for a pet companion and paying the worker pennies. They also expected you to be able to travel hours away from home, with no travel reimbursement.

I guess me dream job of being a professional cat snuggler isn't available atm :(

Meanmaryjean, I would love to read it too.

A work at home job is my dream job.

PI = principal investigator

@atleastmydoglovesme - what are your previous degrees in? I, too, have found only telephonic and CM for work-from-home opps in nursing.......some remote clinical trial work if you have previous experience and aren't entry level......

Specializes in Psych, long term care..

Hi I left to return to property management and did nursing PRN on the side - for a year. I eventually went back to nursing when my facility started offering 12-hour shifts. Good luck.

hi

I left nursing ten years ago and joined research in pharmaceutical industry. Very intersting, challenging and good salary, excellent work life balance. I love it but still miss work in critical care unit and ER.

It is worth a try to leave nursing because work conditions are much better. But you will never find such a rewarding job like nursing. At least this is my opinion.

I actually switching to law enforcement direction. I felt better about it, because of all the excitement that occurs and crazy things that are happening now a days. Some people may hate . But i'm willing to make changes in the law enforcement field

After being in the nursing field for many years, I just want a job that doesn't require thinking, analyzing, assessing or care planning. I plan on being a Wal-Mart greeter.:roflmao:
