Lawson State fall 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello everyone I would like to congratulate everyone who made it into this falls (2016) cohort. I will be applying to Lawsons fall 2017 cohort. I am creating this forum for those who are currently in the program that would like to encourage the next class and also let us know what to expect and for those applying to the 2017 cohort. Lets also post scores as we complete classes and take the ACT. So far I have taken bio 103, micro, eng, a&p 1, psych 1& 2, humanity, and will be taking a&p 2 and math 100 this miniterm and will be taking hps 103 and mth 186 in January. Oh and also remember no question is a dumb question unless you dont ask it!!!

I think I would like to work at St. Vincent's Hospital. But I really just want to get my foot in the door at a reputable hospital . Where do you want to apply?

Wow, I hope it is still just one day a week for the first semester for us when we get accepted!

I wont be applying anywhere. I'll be transferring into a nursing role under the same manager I currently have. They'll just adjust my pay to RN pay and change my title to RN. After I get some experience I would like to work in a doctor's office at brookwood or in surgery. St.Vincent just doesn't pay enough to start out for me. It seems like they throw most new grads on the med surge unit where I used to work which has a high turn over rate still to this day.

That is Awesome that you already have a job in line when you finish the program! I didn't know that St. Vincent's didn't pay that much. I suppose I need to do researching on where I would like to work. Thanks for telling me that.

There are a lot of different fields that you can go in after you graduate... but my advice to you is start networking now so that you can open yourself up to those different opportunities

If I'm not mistaken they start out there nurses around 19 bucks an hr unless it increased with the cost of living raise last year. I know UAB starts there new grads at 21 something now where it was 19 as well. The company I work for starts their new grads out at 25 or 26 an hr.. but with perks like that comes sacrifice lol... luckily I've already paid my dues and am used to how everything works.

It is evident that you have done your research. I am behind! Lol! Thanks for the advice too. What steps do you suggest I take to start networking now?

I'm not sure where you work exactly or what paths you cross in your daily routine but what I did was every nurse that I ever came in contact with I asked them questions like what school did they go to how did they like it did they choose day or night and why was it organized how difficult was the program what made them chose nursing... and I also a graduate within like the last 5 years or so if they recommend any books that simplifies nursing to them as students....

Fortunately I work with 26 nurses so I've done a lot of homework. One of which are clinical instructor in the 1st semester at lawson for the day program., she's great!!!.(yes I have already suggested that she starts doing clinicals for the evening program not for special privileges but because she is tough and when she is done you would have learned something... she's considering):nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting:

Oh my! You have been on it lady! I work in the banking industry, behind the scenes, so I don't get much contact with people in the healthcare field. My BFF Sister is a nurse and she gave me a little advice on how to go about getting into nursing school but nothing more. She is also a graduate of Lawson, but she said that they were awful when she was in school, which was many years ago lol. I think she is just saying that because if was very challenging. I have never worked in the healthcare field. I tried for many years to get a PCT job , but was never successful. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong. Thank you so much for the advice Jmill90! You have truly been a blessing in just this short amount of time. I will follow your advice for sure!:up:

I dont mind helping people that actually want my help. I try to help people in areas that where at one point difficult for me where I didn't have anyone to answer my questions or help guide me. Knowledge is power. Too many people from the older generation make it hard for people like me and you of the younger generation because they had it hard. When it should be quite the opposite. We should make it easier for those following our footsteps. I had a teacher tell me how hard it was for her in dentistry school and that we have to get it the same way she did I'm looking like ***... lol... you can think it but dang don't say it!!!!!

I tried to get a PCT job without the education and was unsuccessful until after I went to school for it. Even then it was still about 4 months before I actually got hired on at UAB. Then it took me 3 years to get my current job....

I liked the night curriculum. I didn't have to get up early for clinical and worry about childcare. I only work fri-sun 12 hours shifts. Makes it easier yi get in solid study time . clinicals alwasys start around 430 to about 1030

Pray you all get in!, TIME MANAGEMENT! TIME MANAGEMENT. just finished my final for the semester....graduate in may. If I can do it I know you all can!

Thank you so much Lstratman for sharing your experience with us! Thank you also for the prayer that we all get in. Congratulations on your success in the program and your graduation!!:nurse:
