L.A County College of Nursing Fall 2015 Applicants

Published

Hello Everyone.

I decided to create this post because I haven't seen any updated threads that relate to the Fall 2015 applicant pool. I'd love to hear from some of you out there who may have also applied so we can begin communicating with each other any updates, info, thoughts, and feelings as this is such a long and anxious process.

A bit of info about myself, I am currently attending elac, I am done with all my prereqs, this is the second time I am applying. I didn't make the cut last term (spring 2015) because I didn't have the points for speech and political science so I did them over winter, although I still don't think they will count because the grades weren't posted before the deadline!:grumpy: The only thing that i did extra with my time that I had proof for was Volunteering at the County Hospital in the ER, so I'm hoping that counts for something..

I have also applied to LACC, LASC, PCC, Rio Hondo, Citrus, Cerritos, but county is definitely my number 1 choice!

I look forward to hearing from you all soon

Hi righteousjenn, thank you for the welcoming and encouraging words:-) Unfortunately I don't speak Spanish, my native language is Hungarian, and I doubt that any patient in the County hospitals speaks this language, as altogether appr. 10 million people speaks it all over the World. Anyway, this fact will not hold me back:-)...As if you are already in the school, how is it feels? Very overwhelming comparing to the comm.college pre-req courses? How are the clinicals? Sorry, if I am asking too many questions, I just really want to make the possibly best decision. (I have applied to LACC nursing program too). Is it possible to pay the tuition from financial aid? What are your suggestion for the summer in case they accepting us? (go over some pre-req materials, or should we buy any book in advance would help at the beginning?) Any input about your experience as a first year student greatly appreciated...Thanks again

Thank you Noelle for the update and the welcoming words!:-)

You will be surprised what type of pts you come across, you might just get one or several Hungarian pts during your nursing program time.

As for me... I LOVE IT! I'm so glad I chose LA county. To be honest, and my opinion is obviously not shared with many of my classmates, it's not even that much worse than pre-reqs. As long as you figure out how to study senario type questions and know how to answer SATA questions, it's not that bad.

Clinicals are great! 1st semester you are on a general med surg floor and depending on what instructor you get, it might be a little specialized.. like ortho or oncology. We start clinicals week 5 and week 6 you start passing meds. Unlike what I've heard from other nursing programs, you are by yourself.. you do not follow a nurse or shadow a nurse you are you and you have your patient right there depending on you for the things you are responsible for doing (in 1st semester that's ADL's, passing meds(some), giving injections, charting, hanging and changing out IV bags (normal saline and basic maintenance IVs.. and we do not start IV's until 4th semester). The only time suck in nursing school so far is the clinical worksheet that we have to do EVERY week.. it takes about 3-5 hours depending on the patient and your instructor... but they fully prepare you for everythng you're going to do.. lol also 3/5 of first semester instructors went to LA county for their RN and all of them worked at LA county as nurses. I've had actual RN's tell me they cannot believe we are first semester students because we're in line with 4th semester students (ELAC rotates on the same floor as us but just on a different day).

It's completely possible to pay for tuition out of financial aid. I highly encourage everyone to do the tuition waiver where they waive all but $700 of your tuition per semester but you have to pay it back at the end or get a job at county and they forgive it after 1 year.

Sorry I am rambling!! I'm more than happy to answer any of your questions :D

Oh, also, if you want to do anything during summer google top medications given in a hospital setting and get familiar with those. It seems like every patient is getting colace and some type of pain med lol... you can look over basic dosage calc as well.. you have a dosage calc test i think 2 weeks in and you only have 2 times to pass it with 85% or higher.. but it's VERY basic.

Hi guys!!! I'm new to this. Im so glad I'm not alone. I think by now everyone is in the same boat as me. I'm applying for fall 2015 LVN-RN program and I am dying to find out the results. I'm currently on the generic BSN program at National Univeristy. But my heart is still wanting for county. So I'll be waiting just like everybody. :)

Hi righteousjenn, you are the best!!! Thanks for all of the info, you are a real lifesaver:-)..I am sure I'll have additional questions, but right now I'm heading for my classes...keep in touch, thx again!

Thanks righteousjenn! You're not rambling! Your words are encouraging! I had a pretty rough LVN school experience so I'm kind of scared of returning to school. How are the instructors? My LVN school was extremely tough, and dare I say, borderline abusive (verbally demeaning, etc.)

Are you going to the lvn or the generic??

What I was majorly confused on when I first started is that we have 5 teachers in 1st semester... In nursing role we had to write a paper and I didn't know if I was supposed to put my clinical instructors name on it or the instructor who talked about the paper(it was my clinical instructor)

Anyways, sometimes some teachers from other semesters will teach lectures in our class.. The psych teacher is awesome and funny (psych is 3rd) so far I don't think I've met 2nd semester instructors and I've met one 4th... They are ALL GREAT!!!! Even with their varying degrees of difficulty...

Idk I've heard that the lvn bridge at la county is super challenging but the teachers are still the same

Hey everyone! New to this site. Waiting to hear back regarding my generic entry application. Fingers crossed we all got enough points. Any news yet? I have all my pre-reqs done but I got a 3.0 in my 3 core sciences. I hope that doesn't hurt me. :arghh:

Welcome shermanm7! No word yet here on my end! And we're already approaching the end of th month! Fingers crossed we all made it! :)

Just got the call today! I'm in!
