Ok, so I've kind of looked around the site, but I can't find what I'm looking for. I applied to the KSU accelerated nursing program for the Spring of 2012. Our applications, TEAS score, etc. already had to be turned in by May 31st. I was curious to know about how long they take to get back to you to let you know if you made it to the second round. I've got a 3.2 GPA right now, and I graduate from UGA in December with a BS in Psychology. I made a 91.3% overall score on the TEAS V. Does anyone have any idea about my chances of getting in? I took the TEAS without even taking A&P at all, but I'm taking it right now. Any advice if I do make it to the second round? I am CPR/First Aid certified and I have my CNA. Also, if anybody needs any advice about the TEAS, I'd be happy to answer some questions and tell you what I thought of it.
Thanks!
@starlite thanks again! We will be taking a semester off in the summer, so am renewing mine in the first week of august before fall semester begins. My immunization isn't up to date, infact I only get immuned when I travel and I haven't travel since 2007 so am guessing am 3rd degree out-of-date LOL I actually don't even know where to start, so I decided to contact ksu clinic sometime next week and see what they will do for me. Any advice will help. Thanks ya'll
@Lizyun Yea you should do that, am sorry you out of state. We will be registering those 3 courses, I wish we could take an elective class like a research course or something too. I need to be full time, atleast it will reduce our course load for summer 2013 bwoy we are scheduled for 3 hard courses for that summer lol Fall 2011 student are just lucky, they have only 2 fairly easy courses for summer 2013!
hey all,
great info from you all. i have been bls/cpr cert and yes it is active. i will wait until i receive email to renew. there are few cases where students were not allowed to participate bc their cert. was not up to date. for those of you that do not have cpr cert, its best to wait for that email. the cpr we need is different than just taking a basic class..it is for health care providers bc goes into aed details and bag to mouth.
we also should not get ahead of ourselves with uniforms etc. they have just added a new black uniform and embroidery..all of this information in detail will come to us with plenty of time to get it done. yes wson has a company that does our uniforms and embroidery etc and yes does change frequently. best to wait so you do not pay more than you need to. stethoscopes are another story..that is something we will all need for the rest of our lifetime.
@islandrae yes, acceptance overall is based on all areas and those areas each have equal weight. it all depends on the other applicants and where your overall score stands. there will be students that take acceptance elsewhere so just be mindful of that. we will keep our fingers crossed for you too!
i don't remember which thread i found this on, but here are some basic tips from a previous ksu thread:
"make sure
1. all immunizations updated. you can go to the clinic at ksu
2. sign up for drug and background check...don't take the drug test. you will take this the 1st week of school my insert here: i would wait until we get that email.
3. buy the calculate with confidence book. and start practicing...you need a 90 on the math test. you can only miss 1 question. what people mess up on are the rounding rules. look at the ksu handbook for nursing online and it will discuss the rules. if you don't make a 90 on your 2nd try, you have to drop holistic and you cannot take it until spring. unfortunately, what you make the 1st time is what you get as a grade. you can make a 100 so don't worry.
4. start reviewing your a&p. the physiology part. patho is no joke so if you haven't had a&p in awhile, brush up on it.
5. make sure to get your student id and your parking pass. they won't mention this at orientation my insert here: this would apply if you are not already a current student.
6. get the health insurance if you already don't have it. should be listed in the letter you get or one of the emails.
7. for uniforms, they will send the info in the letter and you will order them from m. they will also have a day you can come to campus to try on sizes since they run big. buy 2 of the white. also get the lab coat. you can wait on the black scrubs but i went ahead and ordered them. you will not wear black scrubs your 1st semester. my insert here: again wait until we get that email because this will probably be different for us too.
8. buy all white leather tennis shoes. i got mine at kohl's...they have a little grey on them. don't freak out thinking they have to be all white...the logo can be grey. my insert here: i have no idea about this, this is just what they said and it doesn't matter. most of the students wear sneakers! but again, wait for that email!
9. buy your stethoscope and get a watch with a 2nd hand
10. hold off on buying anything that goes in the nursing kit. you will have to buy 2 kits. one is a green bag and the other is a blue bag. the green kit will be used for health assessment and holistic and the blue kit is for holistic and your competencies. they need to be purchased at the bookstore on campus.
my insert here: i deleted 11 and 12 because they are no longer relevant to us.
13. join your class fb page...you will communicate on this! also, everyone helps everyone.you are in this together...no competing against each other...you will not survive nursing school if you are not willing to pay it forward.
14. have fun!!! get to know your class and plan things....you need to let loose and celebrate milestones as a class.
after you start the semester, you will have ati tests to turn in and medcom modules for holistic. i suggest you work on these early in the semester and get them out of the way.
also, practice practice practice in lab to pass your competencies. you will have 4 areas of competencies that are pass/fail
1. range of motion
2. asepsis (sterile technique)
3. med prep
4. med admin
everyone in our class passed at least 2 the first time. shoot for 2. you get 3 chances. the good thing is that you only have to retest the areas you missed. they will explain in more detail as you start but you will freak out about it. don't! just practice. nursing school is about application. you can't just read it to understand it. now you want to pass all of them within the first 2 times so you can free up your time to study.
take advantage of the mentor programs. also, get involved in the sna. someone will need to be elected from your class to be the rep. if you are interested, let them know at orientation. i am sure they will ask.
"
my insert: i am not sure if any of this is current but i wanted to add my two cents and hopefully this will sort of get us on the right track. it seems we want to be prepared before the orientation even gets here and that is fine. we are in this together, don't forget that. anyways, i hope this provides some guidance.
i was talking to a friend that suggested we study nclex practice questions on our free summers. the nclex is what we are preparing for and without it we cannot be registered just keep that in mind. that is our main goal and we can do it together by being setting up study groups, encouraging one another, studying on our own, and reading.
rhetorical question that i always ask myself: who do you work for?
read, study, discuss.
@Proms,
I heard that Saunders is a very good book. However, it depends on your ability to grasp info and how you learn. I actually looked at Saunders, and I liked it because it was divided into each section/type or nursing ie: med/surg, pediatrics, etc. I also looked at Kaplan, but preferred Saunders more. I also looked at NCLEX made Incredibly Easy too. I liked that one, because it was more visually stimulating. I'm more of a visual learner. I will definitely be using Saunders because to me it is the most organized, and the rationals made sense to me without me even knowing much about the different fundamentals of nursing. With that being said, try to go to barnes and noble and look through the books, to see which one is organized to your liking.
Anyway, if we all make it to the end, I'm sure that we will be studying as a group using several copies of review books. I am sooooo excited, and can't wait to start meeting up with you all. Has everyone received your calculate with confidence books. I'm basically finished, and it is all pretty easy. If you all remember the problems from Chem 1152 (finding how many moles/grams/mL) you will be fine. Also, I asked a 1st semester student about the calculation test and she said the questions are straight forward, no extra info to trick us. Order: ##mg of Drug A. Available: Drug A ##mg/mL. How many mL's should the pt. get? Very easy.
Thanks StarLite! I'm a visual learner too, very very organized that I can't study at all in a disorganized state! lol I'll definately pay a visit to barnes and nobles tomorrow to check them out. I received my calculate with confidence today but am not starting until Sunday. Yea we may use initials when refering to staff or faculty names.
