[color=#b22222]anyone else have a know it all in their class? mine drives me crazy!! he's the only male and tries to out do us at every turn. worse, he constantly argues with the instructors. i get the sense that he's talking out of his backside but what i worry about is that other students follow his advice. every time he opens his mouth i want to throw a book at him in the hopes he'll read it. today our test results from a big test came in and we were all excited but he just had to point out that he just happened to get one more point than the highest in the class. he's always complaining about the program, and constantly saying he already knows everything on the ati. i have 3 more mods with this guy. what do i do? please tell me there is one in every class!! grr!!

There was a MAJOR know it all in my EMT program (funnily enough, she was one of the youngest students in the class and didn't know JACK). She was also a total motormouth. One day, I cured the problem.. I leaned over and said, "Hey, we're listening to [instructor's name] now, NOT YOU."

Worked like a charm. ;)

An old saying --- empty barrels make the most noise.

Also, did anyone notice that if HE made one point more than the highest in the class, that would have made HIM the highest score. I guess he was to busy blowing his own horn to make the connect.

There's always one in every group!!!

But I took a class one time where the instructor always gave extra points one way or another. So the super A students would end up with scores of 104 or 106 instead of just plain old perfect 100%.

Cali - you're right. I used to teach in a little business school and I would give a couple extra single point questions in the medical term class. But the kids could only max out to 100 points.

We have a bunch of story tellers in our class..but they dont annoy me. They are genuine. I like the people in our class. Granted, its only been two weeks!! Ill have to update when its been a few months.

HMMM... On the other end; did you ever think that the "know it alls" happen to spend hours studying or have been doing things for a long time? Perhaps they have degrees in a related field. You would be suprised how much a PCT; EMT; PARAMEDIC or CNA knows. Especially if they've been doing it a long time.

I do not like people in my class with poor attitudes. I am currently dealing with this ALOT since i've switched to the day program. In my night LVN program I had alot of others who were similiar to me, actively participated and worked in the medical field for years. Now that I am on days I have alot of younger persons, with sh*t poor attitudes and get mad when I answer a question they do not know the answer to. HMM.. I was in a BSN program for almost 4 semesters and dropped out due to financial reasons in 2009. So I am starting from LVN bc its AFFORDABLE. So, yes I DO know ALOT of whats going on! Not to mention I STUDY MY A$$ OFF!

well said. especially this line "I do not like people in my class with poor attitudes". its the attitude and how the person says the story or comment. if its a snotty attitude or story for attention, the class is not really interested. I studied for class too; I was the 'nerd' of my group because I studied. Don't give me the evil eye because I answer question or got a good grade on my test

My program has 2 options for theory classes-Trad and ATOP (weekend program). My first level I took ATOP theory classes and enjoyed them much more than trad classes my second year. simple reason too: the weekend class was a different crowd. the 2 groups are probably comparable to the day and night classes you mentioned. second level had to take trad classes because of scheduling and it was a big difference. I probably fall into the age group of the 'day' classes but I have no patience to hear about your partying on the weekend, your gf/bf dramas etc. I am here to learn and study, not be in a gossip hall.

my previous comment on this thread I mentioned an genius EMT. I'll ask him to explain something faster than any of my prof's sometimes because he'll explain it better. but i've also had a PCA tell me that BPH stands for "blood pressure high". talk to me like I a real person and i can respect you no matter your credentials. talk down to me because of said credentials and you think you are greater, I will treat you the same way I treat my 5 year old sister when she tells me the grass is purple.

my (added) :twocents:

One person's "Know it all" is another person's Hermione Granger, smart, knowedgable, motivated and excited by learning.

i can understand SOME know it all s being annoying, but some of them actuaally get good grades and know a lot because they do study alot instead of gossip, or complain, or not take class as seriously as some do. some think nursing school is all about working in a hospital, talking to patients and taking BP....others know better. I dislike the ones that constantly interrupt the instructor.....

there is a saying i heard somewhere and it always stuck.... "I'd rather be a smart ** than a dumb **". : )

OMG! We had 2 of those in my fundamentals class @ my old school! They knew more than the teacher which was funny b/c ur registered as a STUDENT! Both were males & 1 his wife is a nurse & he would be like"well my wife is a nurse & she sd u do so & so lk this etc" & the teacher would constantly tell him 2 go by what the book says b/c what they were teachin is 4 the nclex & 2 get u out of NS & when u get in the real world its sumthing totally dif! But i learned hw 2 tune both of them out.

We have some people in my class who ask irrelevant questions. Always right before breaks or lunch!

No worries those students are usually the ones who are capable of being very book smart, but when it come to hands on skills and pt interaction, their horrible.
