Kind of a vent about Community Colleges vs. Universities

One of my friends who has taken all of her pre-reqs in our Community College decided to go for her BSN at a University. Well, she HAD a 4.0, but when she told this to the University, they said that they wouldn't accept her 4.0 as valid, because it came from a COMMUNITY COLLEGE!!! They downgraded it to a 3.8, which put her on a waiting list. This made me mad, and her as well. She ended up getting into the program, though. My Anatomy teacher was mad, also. She atteneded the same community college that she teaches at, and went later for her PhD. She said her HARDEST classes were at this Community College, and she didn't understand how they couldn't accept her hard earned 4.0

What does everyone else think?

but I would be extremely upset as well if they didn't give me the GPA that I had earned.......regardless of where I got it from!! :angryfire

I am an older student and went the CC route too and the some of the students from the Uni. were the ones asking the most basic of questions in A&P. What gives??? I used to think that Uni. was the route to go but not anymore. My neice graduates from HS this year and I recommended that she start at CC but I have one more question for the counselor then...........her credits (full) better transfer!!

Good luck.

I did a community college at night and worked full time during the day while I was getting my prereqs done.I transferred into a BSN program at a private university. They took all of my classes and my 4.0 G.P.A. I have never heard of a university not taking someone's G.P.A. I have heard of some of the classes not transferring. A person who intends to transfer in needs to meet with the school they intend to transfer to and get a class transfer document that tells which classes transfer to what class at the University. This helped me a lot. Many of the universities here have agreements with the CC's about what classes they will take. A few people who transferred had a little trouble with classes transferring, but I can say I never had a problem at all!

I would have been livid! Did they say if it had anything to do with classes transferring?

I transferred, and all my applicable credits transferred with face value. I've never heard of downgrading like that. It's completely unfair. 100 and 200 level classes are the supposed to be the same, whether you take them at a CC or Univ.

I am taking/have taken Micro/AP1-3 and a few other courses at my local CC...I transfered those credits to my current program which is a masters program! they took my classes at face value and did not downgrade my GPA...ive never heard of this...ive actually attended 4 different colleges and Universities...one CC, 2 small private (one at bachelors level and one at masters level) and one EXTREMELY large public university (OSU)...My GPA has ALWAYS transfered to whatever school I was attending at the time...i have never had any college change my GPA up or down!!

I agree that's outrageous! Did it say anything on the application form or other paperwork that they do not count community college grades the same as those from a university? In other words, did she know going in, that she would be penalized, or did she find out after she had submitted her application? Either way, I think it's wrong.

I have a BS from a university (from way back when), but almost all of my recent prereqs have been from a community college. In fact I'm taking classes at both a CC and a university right now, and my community college class is MUCH harder than my university class.

I'd be steaming mad, too. :angryfire Glad she got in anyway.

That is absurd. Thankfully in New Jersey there is a program call NJ transfer where the community colleges in the state will accept up to 90 credits from a community college and they carry the same weight as the university credits. I am finding this to be extremely helpful when choosing where to go for my BSN. Just for the record (not to offend anyone) but I feel community college classes are equal if not better than ones the university offers. And you can't even compare tuition costs.

I can't even believe this. There is just no way. If on your transcripts you have a 4.0, then the university must take them at face value. The only thing I have ever heard of is classes not transferring because a student transfers from a school on the quarter system to a school on semesters. If you are planning on transferring to a 4 year school, advisors from either one of the schools would be able to tell you what is transferrable.

I'm sorry, but I just can't believe than any school would do something like that. It defies logic.

sorry OP if this is a bit off topic but I just wanted to say that my CC classes are MUCH MUCH easier than any of my bachelor classes...the teachers at my CC practically spoon feed you, it couldnt be any easier...(oh and dont get me started on the quality of teachers at the CC, i have already been to the counselors office to complain about the incompetant staff, hey i need to know this stuff!)

my bachelor classes tended to lean more on individual work, ie the teacher would lecture and be there to guide you but they really promoted critical thinking...I put less work into my cc classes than i did my hs classes! don;t want to offend anyone, i can only speak for my cc classes...

Im not trying to say one is better than the other, ive had bad and good classes and teachers at both, so lets not make this a thread about which one is better...any institution that beleives in higher learning is good...except maybe the one the OP mentioned...but you really cant compare classes anyway seeing as though no one class is ever the same with the same teacher or same teaching style, etc...its about as useless as comparing salaries across the US...how can you make such a generalization saying that cc classes are better than the ones taught at a University unless you have BEEN to every cc and university in the country....doubting anyone here has.

I couldn't believe it either! My Anatomy instructor said that she has had this happen to students before, all transferring to the same University. I'm glad she got in, too...Like I said, she had a 4.0 and a good SAT score, that's all that college looked at. No entrance exam, no interviews! Another crazy crazy thing about that school........On one of the first days they make you strip down to your UNDERWEAR to get you comfortable around your classmates! Is that crazy, or what? (The nursing director told her this) How could they do this? I don't know. Sounds screwed up. Possible even against the law? What would they do if someone refused? Throw them out, probably not.

ummm...are you pulling our legs??? is this university accredited??? i would check into that!!! Just remember not ALL universitys are like this, most are places of higher learning not like the one you mention...i would tell your friend to make sure that this so called Univ. is actually accredited...there are quite a few so called colleges and universities out there these days that just try to get your money for some "fake" degree...so thats why you have to make sure the institution is accredited...
