what kind of jobs can I get as an LPN?

Published

I'm just weighing my options right now, and it seems like the fastest route to RN for me is to get my LPN, work for a bit, and then fast track to RN. As a single mom, ideally I'd like to work while in RN school. What kind of jobs can you get as an LPN. Are you pretty much stuck with LTC or a Dr.'s office?

It really depends on the area you are in. Where I am currently, the LPN openings at hospitals are few and far between and they all want you to have experience. LPN's in some areas are sort of limited to LTC and doctor's offices. Home care sometimes hires LPN's. Check out your area and see what options you might have after graduating if you are not wanting to be in LTC or a doctor's office.

As the previous poster mentioned, it depends largely on your geographical area. I am in Texas, where LVNs have a fairly broad scope of practice. In urban areas, I have found hospital jobs for LVNs to be somewhat scarce, but there are other areas that offer more opportunities (and better pay, I might add). Some of these areas include long-term care/assisted living; home health; rehab; dialysis centers; clinics; and psych facilities.

To get a feel for where LVNs work in your area, I suggest you check out the Sunday classifieds in your newspaper.

Good Luck!

I live in a large metropolitan area in Texas where LVNs/LPNs are utilized in doctors' offices, nursing homes, psychiatric facilities, group homes, jails/prisons, hospitals, home health agencies, clinics, occupational health, public health, hospice, research, and education.

I am from California and have been submitting my app and resume everywhere! The responses I have been recieving from hospitals is that they want 6 mo to 1 yr exp in Southern California area, and the pay is low in hospitals. I have tried SNF's and no responses. Luckily I was just hired at an awesome assisted living facility and the pay is good, the hours are great and the work is no stress. If you want to do more of the clinical aspect of nursing, hospitals are the best bet. I have heard too many horror stories about SNF's. I chose to accept this position because I plan on working in case management. I know that corrections has the best benefits and high pay if you want to go that route. The hiring process takes a couple of months.

What is staff patient ratio at the assisted living facility that you were just hired? Mind if I ask for the wage?

I am considering an LPN position in an assisted living facility also, the ratio is 1:42 and the pay is $21.00/hr.

A rehab facility has a ratio of 1:30 and the pay is $25.00/hr. I still am wondering about which I should go for. Some say pretty good things about assisted living facilities...any input?

Hello, I just moved back to Houston and I am currently looking for a job. I feel good to know that there are a lot of places that hire lvn's out of school, however, I was curious about what are did you start off in first? I haven't even thought about psyc. but what group homes are out there? Was your pay out in fort wt. over $18-20hr when you started. Have you heard of the wages going up since then? ( curious because when the job says competitive wages, I want to be able to know the ranges) thanks:icon_roll
