Hi there,
I just wanted to start a thread for anyone who is in the Kentucky Board of Nursing's KARE program. I thought this would be a good place to share/exchange info and lend some support to one another!
I got in trouble 9-23-2015, got reported to the board of course, etc etc.
The board ordered that I seek evaluation by a board certified evaluator AND partake in a 4 week IOP program. However, I didn't wait for them to tell me to do this. I went and got the IOP done well ahead of them telling me to do so.
That being said, I didn't sign my contract until 2-3-2016. Get as much as you can done NOW. That way you are waiting even longer for them to schedule that contract signing date.
I also didn't start working until 5-11-2016. Good luck.
My addiction was in full force in Nov 2015 and I self admitted in to an inpatient rehab. I self reported to the board , met with an investigator in Feb 2016 . And I didn’t hear anything else from the board until 10-08-2019 !! In the meantime I worked with no problem and was blessed to have a job as an infection control nurse in a long term care facility. When the board contacted me in 2019 I had inpatient rehab and outpatient rehab behind me so when I got my board approved chemical dependency eval , the psychiatrist didn’t recommend any further treatment. I’m on probation for 2 years from 10/2019 with random drug screens where I check in everyday and I attend 3 n/a or aa meetings per week- they’re online now of course. My board order is public . I’m in the disciplinary section because I didn’t self report while in rehab and I didn’t complete the inpatient rehab. So I’m really blessed I didn’t have to repeat inpatient. I did complete outpatient.
just do all you can now and it will definitely help your case.
look up your license online and if it says active then you can work , I did.
good luck! ?
I’m not a CRNA but I’m an RN. I was in the program 2014-2019 & VERY compliant. I think was striving to become their poster child. I asked a couple of times if the 5 year “sentence” could be reduced- that answer is a hard “NO”! As I progressed through the 5 years, I had my contract updated to reflect that I was allowed to administer controlled meds w/o visual supervision & work in a supervisory/managerial role. But these happened at the timeframes that’s usually stipulated in the KARE contract, after showing continuous compliance. They weren’t things I negotiated independently.
Yeah I kinda figured there would be no decreased time sentence. The lady I originally talked to before I signed said that after a year they may change or take out the provisions about me needing supervision because of my job title. So June was a year this year and I had to write a lettter, my boss had to and so did my sponsor saying why I should be eligible for this change. And they didn’t change it. Said that those provisions were the “core” of the KARE program! And that I could try again at the 3 year mark
I have noticed that the Board orders appear to be mostly a template and they just plug a name in. Unfortunately, doesn't appear they really adjust the guidelines, especially in consideration of those in advance practice. I am a NP, and was offered "probation" for 3 years (which would have been discipline on my license, etc) versus KARE. I think KY is one of the few states that makes public the nurses in the monitoring program (so it will always flag for an employer when they confirm license). I would love to connect with other nurses who are in KARE, as there are so few resources for healthcare providers in recovery.

This would be great, I completely agree. For an agency that governs over exhausted and burnt out nurses they sure seem to care very little about their mental health.

Can someone tell me how long on average it takes from being recommended to the program to the time you get a contract. I cant work until then.
