Kentucky Board KARE

Published

Hi there,

I just wanted to start a thread for anyone who is in the Kentucky Board of Nursing's KARE program. I thought this would be a good place to share/exchange info and lend some support to one another! :angrybird12:

Anyone familiar with panel O-764680? Yet another new one that's showed up and it's $78 🙄

I am a CRNA who has been in the KARE program for 18 months.  I was accepted into KARE after admitting to drug deferment of fentanyl from my employer.  I was given the green light to go back to practice as a CRNA in January 2024 with minimal restrictions. I am able to give narcotics on my own.

I have been applying to several different places with no luck of being accepted back to employment yet.  I saw that there some CRNAs who had posted here and I thought that it couldn't hurt to reach out to try and see if maybe someone on here knew of any facilities willing to work with CRNAs in the KARE program?

CRNA,

Im an APRN (not a CRNA) and would love to connect with others in the program who are near Oldham/Jefferson county.   Not sure if you are in that area or not.  I can give you some input offline that I'd rather not share on this forum (as I am sure there are people monitoring here).

Never had that one but just a comment:  the prices on these tests are criminal.  The actual cost are likely less than $5 from what I have heard (have contacts in lab testing that know pricing).

I am willing to connect just not sure how to go about it.  I just signed up to allnurses.com to maybe help in my search for employment, but I do know I need 15 post to PM individuals. I would like to add that I have not experienced anything negative being in the KARE program and I take full responsibility for my actions.  I have just had a lot of employers who are ready to hire me but when I tell them I am enrolled in KARE and the reason for this, I get denied.  Again, I understand why, just looking for a 2nd chance to prove I can be trusted again.

Wildcat NP, I do have the ability to PM after replying to 15 post on this site. Here is my email ([email protected]) as well. I don't check it very often bc it isn't my main one I use but if you send me a message, get on here and let me know when you do and I will read it and reply. Any and all advice is needed while I am trying to navigate these waters I am in currently in.

Has anyone ever had any of the provisions lifted in the KARE agreement? I am a CRNA and cant practice independently with the KARE contract. Just wondering if this is a possibility

hey KVB, I was reading through the thread and saw your post about being a CRNA. I am currently attempting to find a job again doing anesthesia.  I can see that you haven't been on for a bit but if you do by chance log on and see this, I would love to chat about where you are at in getting back to work as a CRNA.  I am finding it a bit difficult in getting back to work mysekf at the moment.

Can anyone please tell me how long they made you be off work from the time you requested to be in the program to when you cleared to work again? Or whats the whole process? I need to know if I should sell my house to survive or what.

I self reported in April 2018 and was back to work by the end of November I believe. With a non profit behavioral health facility and a lot less pay but I was thankful just to get back to some sort of work. If you are in Kentucky have you looked in to the Team Kentucky Home Owner Assistance Fund? That might be an option to help with your mortgage and also, you lender for your home will have hardship assistance options as well. I was able to find mortgage assistance in 2018 when I went through all this and we didn't lose our home. To get back to work quickly you have to do everything they ask you to which can be overwhelming. Substance abuse evaluation and whatever treatment the evaluator recommends, (mine was to complete an IOP program), have a meetings with the board, go to at least 3 NA/AA/or Smart recovery meeting per week, notify all your doctors of being in the program and have them sign a paper you have to send to KBN, submit all your medications you take and have all the doctors sign off, they will have you sign up with spectrum/Affinity which is the drug testing app where you will check in everyday between the hours of 5am-1pm. Submit a relapse prevention plan , you will also have to do monthly self reports once you are accepted to the program. I'm sure I'm leaving stuff out. And if you do all that and get accepted to KARE, make sure you are making this a priority and working as hard as possible on your recovery and doing what you need to do to prevent a relapse.  I didn't realize how much help I needed and relapsed 6 months after getting back to work and reported it to the board and they suspended my license for two full years so I didn't get it back until June of 2022. I still have 3 years left to be in KARE now and all this happened is 2018. The drug tests are very costly especially when you aren't able to work for a while. I wish you the best. Try to take it a day at a time and not let yourself get to overwhelmed. I have 5 yeas sober now. You can definitely do it!

Everything Hmhgjh shared is spot-on. It might seem overwhelming at first, but trust me—it's completely possible if you're truly ready to get sober. I didn't self-report, and yes, I was diverting, but I took responsibility and didn't resist the process. I don't know the specifics of your situation, but perhaps my story might make you feel a bit better about it all.

I'm almost two years into the KARE program, and while it hasn't been easy, it's been worth it. Finding employment wasn't immediate, but now, I think I have secured a position in the OR, even though it's a bit farther from home. If you stay the course, your opportunities will come.

My advice? Follow every step they give you without delay—do the meetings, submit the paperwork on time, and follow all the drug screen guidelines to the letter. I haven't failed a single test, and I don't intend to. If you have access to HSA funds, they can help cover costs like evaluations and drug screens, which has been a blessing for me.

Non-compliance won't reflect well with the board or potential employers, so staying on track is crucial. But remember this: even if you can't see it right now, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Take it one day at a time, and know you're moving toward a brighter future, step by step. You've got this!

How long do you have to complete the drug test once you sign in and get an order to test? Im worried about working and not being able to test on time.

Also, is all information regarding your situation kept private from the public and your current employer? Like I know your employer will know you're in the program but the details of why won't be released?
