saying g'day to everyone! i've been missing in action for awhile. get to check in on the posts from time to time, but haven't had time to post. hope all my mates here on allnurses are keeping well and that life is being kind.
i see there's a few of our american colleagues looking for a "seachange", and are planning on joining us here in oz. i'll take the liberty of, on behalf of, the australian allnurses members, to welcome you to the land down under! we hope you enjoy your time here with us and we're sure you wont want to leave! just a bit of advice ... please remember, australia is a big country. there's lots to see. and, importantly, there's more to our magnificent country beyond the shores of sydney! be sure to visit the inland areas as well. you'll find it an amazing experience seeing the outback, and meeting the people.
would also like to thank the americans who were, in part, instrumental in helping secure the freedom of one of our countrymen, douglas wood. he had been taken hostage in iraq several weeks ago and the terrorists had threatened to kill him if australian, us, and british troops weren't pulled out of iraq. thanks to a combined effort, he's a free man today. his wife is an american. they live in california. just goes to show, that when people work together, good things can, and do, happen.
onto a lighter note...... i'm looking for ideas on how to make french toast! lol i made some last weekend. it was ever so ho-hum! soooo, i'm hoping the good folks here on allnurses might share how you make it, with lil ol me! in anticipation, thanks! :icon_hug:
on the nursing news front:
adelaide university is now offering the bachelor of nursing degree as of next year. "one of the significant strong points of our programme is the substantial amount of time dedicated to practical learning," said the vice-chancellor james mcwha. so, there yer go! and about time too! what is it i've always said about the need for more time/effort being put into the practical aspects of the degree course???!!! at last! someone's taking notice. can only be a good thing. i'll get orf me soapbox now.
cheers from me

Hi, Grace, I have often seen you posting here.
I'm over in Vic. Clinic nurse so have weekends off hooray!! Lousey pay though
Pleasant morning, trying to study for my first law exams, oh boy, think I will stick with nursing.
Yes it has been an interesting week in the news. Especially the change in executive ideas of illegal migrant detention, can't be good for the children.
Lets face it, most of Australias 'illegal's come through the airports, find what a great country this is and end up staying. Don't blame them.
Ya, its good to be alive here living in Aussie, and a nice slightly cold but sunny morning on a winters day. Hooray for the footy!!!
Hello to all Americans and anyone else 'looking' in.
Ah..well back to this law stuff..... seeyas C

hi, i tend to hold the opinion;
1) i live in australia. so i'm miles ahead.
2) i'm upright and breathing. so i'm even more ahead!
so, even if the pay's a tad lousy, at least you're receiving a wage. are able to put food on the table, and, hopefully, pay the bills. good luck with your law studies, no mean feat tackling that subject. the lousy pay now, should increase threefold once you've graduated with your law degree and, hopefully, practising. always remember ....
~palma non sine pulvere~
it's my old high school motto. it means; no reward without work.
i'm sure you'll do just fine. hang in there and persist!
cheers.....

Hi Grace - missed you! Sadly pushed for time myself, so can't chat right now, but
PS What about adding ginger? I had french toast at Mrs Brown's in Carlton last year that was almost like french ginger bread and it was delicious! I truied recreating it at home later, and came up with something a little less sweet and heavy, which wasn't bad at all. Hmm - seems like I hacve time for food, just not to chat! :chuckle
Thanks for the welcome back folks! The weeks and months are passing all too quickly!
Thanks for the hint re French toast, Talaxandra, I'm not a great fan of ginger myself. But my "other half" is, so will try it out on/for him. :-)
Ah yes! "Dr Death!" Gwenith, it made me squirm when I first heard his name. Same surname as the questionable gentleman(??!!) who removed an "infected hair follice"??!! from my nose some years ago. I'm left with a noticable scar across the bridge of the nose! When one of our ENT blokes saw it, he was disgusted and requested the histology report as he was convinced the "gentleman" had actually removed cartilage! While the report failed to confirm any evidence of cartilage, it was noted that an unusually LARGE section was removed for pathology! Interesting, eh? In other words, the folks in the lab were stunned to see such a LARGE section taken from the nose for the reason the procedure was performed! He ducked for cover when I contacted him requesting the histology report, and my reasons for wanting it. Since that "interlude" with that 'gentleman", I've heard various reports of bad practise etc. Sssoooo.... hearing his namesake involved in the incidents in QLD, I stood up and took notice!
What I'm not "getting", is why the Federal Police can't just issue a warrant for his extradition to Australia so he can face the charges. Imagine if the shoe were on the other foot??!! The Americans would be demanding the bloke be extradited and our government would, no doubt, comply without question!
I saw Peter Beattie on TV the other day. From what I picked up, he's not about to sit on his laurels and let this geezer walk scott free. And neither he should! Good on ol Pete!
I've noticed some of our American colleagues, those wanting to come here to work, are a tad amazed at the amount of paperwork they have to fill in, the requirements needing to be met in order to come and work here, etc. Well, no bloody wonder! This "Dr Death" somehow managed to slip through, and it's cost many people their lives! AUSSIE lives!
Plain and simple people, if you're not QUALIFIED, not COMPETENT, Can't meet our VERY HIGH standards, then DON'T bother applying to come here!
We DON'T WANT YOU! We Might be the world's most isolated island/ continent, but we're NOT a third world country! Not that that should matter. Good health care should be MANDATORY all over the globe! But please don't mistake that Australia is some backward, living in the dark ages, outpost! Coz we sure as hell are NOT! You wont find Kangaroo's hopping down our streets, no sireee! Weelll, maybe in some REALLY REMOTE OUTBACK town, MAYBE, SOMETIMES! Most likely as a result of some kid letting their pet loose! :rotfl:
There are those who hold the opinion that our immigration laws are harsh. I'm not going to debate that here now. However, without surefire laws and standards, -and even with them! -jerks like this geezer, "Dr Death", slipped through. And, who paid the price for it? Innocent AUSSIES! In some cases, probably a veteran, who, ironically, fought in wars to keep this country free from jerkwads, crooks, like "Dr Death".
The fact he slipped through, the fact he's killed people, those things are bad enough! That he's now being protected from prosecution here in Australia, by holding up/out, in America ..... DON'T GET ME STARTED! :angryfire :angryfire
Our American friend's know I love them. it's not about, or against, them. It's the system, the laws, the whatever.... which allows this mongrel to avoid being held accountable for what he's done. The mere fact that ANY Americian lawyer, politician, etc, would even think to stand in the way of this person being returned to Australia in order to face the charges against him, is beyond my comprehension.
I'll get down off my soapbox now.
Hope this answers your question, Gwenith!

Try adding a touch of vanilla to the mixture before soaking the bread, as well as adding some heavy cream to it. Makes it more like a custard. Let it soak over night in the frig and then bake it in the oven in the morning..........
Also try using thick egg bread that you have sliced yourself, or thick sliced cinnamon-raisin-nut bread..............Yummy.
ENJOY!!!!!! :) :)

The New York Times newspaper had a front-page story summing up the Dr. Death case in the Sunday 19/6 issue. That's significant because the Times is the most important publication in the United States, the thing that opinion-makers read, with subscribers all over the country. (I live 5,000K from New York and I have it home-delivered, for instance.) Australian news doesn't often make our media, unless it involves cute furry animals or TV personalities dangling their babies in front of dangerous ugly ones...
What surprised me is how little background checking the hospital did before hiring this physician. It took a newspaper reporter to do a Google search on the fellow to suss out his chequered past? And if not for a Qld legislator, none of this would have come to light? Thank goodness for the nurse who kept pushing the issue! That's a true case of patient advocacy. Yet she was labelled a "personality problem" by the hospital management; the same mgmt that gave Patel an "employee of the month" award when it was hitting the fan, if the NY Times report is correct. Unbelievable! Or maybe all too believable...

That's good news it's receiving headlines in the US. Thanks for sharing, Bukko.
When seeing my own GP this morning, he asked my opinion on this whole matter and was as dumbfounded as I am as to HOW on earth this bloke ever got hired in the first place, never mind HOW was it at all possible, given the whole scheme of things in an operating theatre, wards etc. How come SO MANY people were impacrd on, or worse still, died?
And isn't it bloody typical, the very nurse who was trying so desperately to advocate and alert, was labelled, put down, dismissed!! You can bet your sweet nellie that management in that hospital will have a LOT to answer for.
All I can do is shake my head and wonder ........
