Hi everyone! I'm going over my rationales for Kaplan and can't figure out why the answer is this:
The nursing team consist of two RN, one LVN and a nursing assistant. What is a appropriate lvn/lpn task?
1) ambulated a patient 8 hrs after thoracotomy
2) give enema to a pt prior to a colonoscopy
3) complete a bed bath for a pt who is burned
4) perform a dressing change on a pt 3 days after a cholecystectomy?
I picked #2 but then Kaplan says #4... What am I not seeing?

I chose number 4, but I was also an LPN, so I know my scope of practice. I would say patient 1 the nursing assistant can do, pt 2 RN can do, and 3 RN should do because may require frequent assessment and skill level of RN, patient #2 is pre op, which generally LPNs dont do. Those are my rationales. I could be wrong. patient 4 would be a good assignment for LPN as it is within their scope of practice and is a stable patient, in which LPNs care for stable patients and are also able to do dressing changes.

I picked 4 as well because that is within the scope of a LPN. #1 requires the assessment of RN because it is the first ambulation after surgery. #2 If it is a soap suds enema, believe it or not, STNAs can administer those. #3 is another STNA one - basic hygiene. And #4 because Pt is stable 3 days post op - within the LPN scope. Does that help?
What did Kaplan's rationale say?
Thanks!!!! Kaplan said Nursing assistants can give the enemas for #2.... And I was like "what? Never heard that!" Lol!
Thankyou again! It all makes sense now... Looks like I have to read up on what LVNs can do and what CNA can do
Kaplan said LVNs can do dressing change, so number 4 is the answer
Way to go Lillybud, you nailed it!:) I am aware CNAs can do enema's I thought about that....lol Glad we could help.

Never knew they could give enemas until a little while ago! I got a question like that a few weeks ago and I immediately eliminated that one thinking "Whaaat? They can't do that..."
Looks like they can, lol! You live and you learn :) Taking my NCLEX in 5 days so thats all I have been doing are questions, questions, questions!
Lilly bud, good luck. Your rationale was on point. I have no doubt you will pass and probably with 75 questions. I took NCLEX-RN last month and passed with 75 qestions. Luckily I did get this questions, haha!
Thank you Ella! I really just hope to PASS in general! Man on man, what a stressful past couple of weeks this has been! I definitely do not want to do it again :) I have answered a lot of questions, so I am hoping it just feels like another practice exam. It is just hard to quiet those nerves, ya know? Did you land a job yet Ella?
Peppermint, are you practicing for your NCLEX? I assume, but want to make sure :)
Lillybud, I already had a job in the clinic as an LPN (I dont really like the hours of the hospital even though the pay is better). So once I passed NCLEX-RN they offered me a pay raise to be the nursing supervisor which since I like the place, its a start. Good luck in your studies.
But my other LPN classmates that wanted Hospital Jobs have all landed them within a month or 2 of graduation. Of course they have to tell their employer they are going on for their BSN and are required to show proof they are indeed enrolled in RN-BSN program. I am taking a much needed break and need to pay off these loans before I even think about going back.
