I recently applied to Excelsior College for the ADN program. They called today to let me know that my LPN license has been verified and accepted. I'm so excited to move forward! I've been contemplating on going back to school for years. A little background about myself. LPN of 8 yrs. Mostly LTC experience. I have two kids. 10yr old and 8 month old. Work only weekends. This program seems perfect for me, seeing that I am extremely motivated. I requested my transcripts from previous colleges attended a few days ago. I'm sure they'll take a while with the holidays but was wondering when they finally do get the transcripts, how long does it take for them to let you know what pre reqs are needed? Is there anything I can do to advance in the program while waiting? I thought about taking info lit through Tor college if Excelsior gives the ok. Anybody else just getting there foot in the door?

Congratulations on making the decision to go back to school! Microbiology and Anatomy are the number one prerequisite courses majority students have had to take along with Information Literacy. Info Lit is pretty straight forward and could be completed in one day, two days if you get bored. I took it through Excelsior so I don't know if my statement holds true when its taken outside of Excelsior. Best of success on your endeavors.

Did you take micro and a&p through Excelsior as well? If so, how was it? I'm thinking about taking the credit by exams for those. It looks like a&p is combined into one course that way instead of taking the courses. Thank you for responding and best of luck with yours as well! :)

Since my previous Micro and Anatomy grades were over 5 years old I had to retake them both through Excelsior. I used Study Group 101(MyStudyGroup101 LLC) along with ECs Content Outline and the practice exams. It was no picnic but I passed Micro with a B and Anatomy with a C. That was fine by me because those were the grades I got when I took them in a Community College back in 2006. í ½í±í ½í±í ½í±

Oh ok, did you take the courses or the credit by exam? Sorry for asking again if you already answered the question lol. I'm new to this. From what I understand, the courses are 8wks long and you have assignments to turn in as well as participate in lecture and group discussions. The credit by exam you study and take test when you're ready? Is the a&p 1-2 combined if taken by exam?

Oh sorry! I was just rambling on and didn't really answer your question. The A&P credit by exam is both parts in one (without the lab). I have taken all courses, except Info Lit., using credit by exam. What I used to study Micro and A&P and all the nursing courses, so far, is Study Group 101 and Excelsiors' practice exams.

Ok, thank you so much. You've been a great help!

You're very welcome! :)

Hi, I too am going through the same process. I recently applied and I'm waiting for my transcripts to be evaluated, hopefully it'll all be completed by beginning/mid January. I guess that'll afford me time to save $$ in the interim. Best of luck to you and Happy New Years

Thank you! Happy New Year to you as well. I guess I have to start saving up too. I'm was looking over the tuition and fees and saw that they charge $490 per credit hr for the multi source opt as well. I don't know how I missed that. I thought you just paid enrollment fee, exam+ site sitting fee, books, supplies, etc so if a class is 3 credits, you're paying $1470 + fee of exam etc?? I'm gonna need all the help I can get :(

NurseNme30 You don't pay that $490/credit fee unless you're going to take the class. The only costs you pay when you choose to take the course credit-by-exam is the Exam fee ($345) + Practice Exam ($75) + Pearson Vue's Fee ($60) which is a total of $480. You can also find used textbooks on ebay or amazon. I think I recall reading that the books could be rented but I can't remember which site. If I come across that info again I will pass it on to you.

Amazon.com has text book rental. I found this out AFTER buying all my books.

I didn't finish Excelsior's program (was young and stupid and didn't go for the last part before they revamped the program so I'd have to start over if I had gone this route again). The practice exams were optional when I went and I would definitely recommend purchasing them if doing the credit by exam method (which I did back then). The questions come with rationale feedback and from what I experienced they repeated themselves a lot on the actual test.

I don't know exactly how everything is set up now, but years ago you didn't have to enroll to take some of the exams, just by the the time you got to a certain level in the nursing exams. Something to look into if there's still an annual enrollment fee.
