Hello all,
I just applied to the nursing program at the College of Brockport (in Rochester, NY) as a transfer. I have already completed my BS in biology from Cornell University with a 3.6.
I was rejected today, called, and they eventually sent me to the Dept. Chair for Nursing. She explained that they had SO many applicants for direct transfer, the only "fair" way to do it was to base the acceptance on GPA only. Nevermind the essay we had to write, or what school we went to, or our experience - GPA only.
I asked her if school was even considered, she said no. So I said "An applicant with a 3.7 from a community college would get priority over me with a 3.6 from an Ivy League school?" She said yes.
Am I the only one who thinks this is freaking ridiculous?? I could get a 4.0 from a community college with little to no effort if I wanted to. I'm just so angry at them right now.
Also, I didn't start this post with "I am better than CC students." The first negative post came when someone said "CC students are smarter for not spending money."
I'll be damned if I'm not going to defend my school and education when someone tries to degrade my choice to attend here. It evolved from there when so many of you jumped on the bandwagon and decided to try and beat me down for some reason.
As for the "employers don't care about the school" - I think you misunderstood. I'm not talking about nursing school - I'm talking about in general. Have a CC 4.0 student apply to work at a fortune 500 company vs a 3.6 Ivy League graduate. I would bet my life on the outcome of that, if the GPA alone were considered, and nothing else.
Finally - this do your research thing is so stupid. They put an essay on the application, that usually means they read it. to beachbedhead - I'm not even sure *** you're talking about. Not once did I ever say I should get priority over everyone. If you would read my posts (and try to understand them a little) you'd see that.

Lol I would expect someone who went to an Ivy League school, to research EVERYTHING before applying somewhere....
Life isn't fair..
Sounds familiar eh?
Wow I have to respond because I think your posts are extremely offensive or at least your response to mine. I have went to a community college and I am currently in a BSN program at a private university. The private school has been harder in respect that it seems to be the trend that grades are based almost only on exams so you can never slip up but I actually had a harder time at the community college. When I went to the community college the quality of your instructor was hit or miss and if you got a bad professor you were screwed so the students that are managing such high grades to get in the cc nursing programs are hard working excellent students and I would rather have them as my nurse anyday and wait believe it or not....even if you were a prestigous 4.0 student i would rather the cc nurse. The only difference between you and someone that can't afford to go to a school like that is money and money could not matter less to me or any of your future patients.
To answer your other question, yes most schools to just go by GPA. My school is one of the rare ones in my state taht does take in to account an entrance test and essay but...their focus is still primarily GPA
And don't forget you may have to take care of some of us lowly people as patients.
As well as the fact that obviously your wonderous education didn't do too much for you since you are trying to get into nursing school, just a thought. You also wrote about people not being supportive but my post was written first and even though I found it offensive I was very nice because I felt you were probably just upset over everything so don't blame others because people are very supportive on here just don't look down on others.

DUH...you said it RIGHT THERE
Let me try this again, since you people cannot seem to help yourselves.
I do not think I should get priority. I do not think I am better than anyone else who attends a CC (indeed, I went to one for a while). I think that an isolated GPA does not tell the whole story, and my example is that because I went to a very rigorous school, with a tough curriculum, had they considered the schools students came from it would have helped them frame the GPAs a little more.
The minute I posted this, everyone began flaming me and defending community colleges and telling me they are essentially the same caliber as Cornell. That is a ridiculous assertion, and if you step back and think about it, everyone here knows that. This evolved into a Cornell vs CC fight very quickly because of all of you trying to attack my school, which was never the point of this post. You all need to calm down and address to issue here:
It was unfair of Brockport to base a decision on GPA alone.
DUH...you said it RIGHT THERE
That was after the rejection, and she said they decided to do this DUE TO THE NUMBER OF APPLICANTS. They never said "GPA is all that will be considered" even when I called and asked before I applied, they said they take everything into account. Seriously people, you need to calm down and stop getting so upset over everything.
Sorry you didn't get accepted into nursing school. Sorry your G.P.A. wasn't high enough to get in. However, this has nothing to do with CC and your Ivy League university. You're just upset and we can tell. But wouldn't be? Try applying again and try applying to more than one college. A lot of people don't get in the first time.
I can see why this irritates you. It would make me really angry too. I can relate a little bit. My GPA because I was a bio major and we had to take classes beyond the prereqs that were definitely no walk in the park (o-chem, physics, biochem.) People who had less demanding majors had a higher GPA (not always, I'm just generalizing). Now that I know how the system works, I would go back and take as many classes as possible at a CC to save money, take out less student loans at my university, and probably pick an easier major because I have gotten no priority being a bio major. I applaud people who were able to get into programs I got rejected from, I'm sure they deserved it. You live and you learn. What can you do? I'm sure your experiences from Cornell will come in handy one day. Good luck!
PS: you really should look into ABSN programs. I think you'd be a competitive applicant.
