Just a quick question about your clinical schedule????

Hi Everyone!

I'm a senior student and was just curious how my school compares with other schools.

We have no idea ever when we will find out our clinical placements; including days, hours, and hospital. Some semesters its weeks ahead of time and sometimes less than 1 week before starting.

So my question to all of you is how long before your semester starts do you find out your schedule?

Thanks in advance!

We just found out Friday for clinical starting September 6th.

Lol, I think I must have gone to the same program! Completely disorganized...random...last minute and inconvenient...does that sound familiar?? ;)

Heck that's lots of time.my school you found out about 2 weeks ahead.

I'm taking the BScN program, and we found out our information mid to late August, so hopefully within the next two weeks. From what I hear, usually you start the program, you learn your basic skills, then after a while (depending on your grades) you can choose where you'd want to do your placement. Usually our placements in first year are at a nursing home. We don't start hospital placements till probably late 2nd year, or third year.

I'm a senior in a BSN program. We never have a choice unfortunately. We never find out until the last minute sadly :(

we chose day(s) and times of our clinicals before the end of the previous semester. we did not find out our clinical group or location (except med surge 2 where we rotated through 4 locations) until the first day of clinical when we met in school to meet our group, instructor and find out about the location. med surge 2 we only needed to meet to find out our schedule and meet the first instructor of the 4.

we did all our rotations in hospital except for pull outs to clinics, various peds locations (CP program, LTC for children), VNSNY, etc. 75% were in the main hospital, the rest in a hospital in the same system. we had clinicals weekly starting the 3rd monday of our first semester after learning AM care and vital signs. we weren't placed by skill level or in location by request. you chose your day(s) and the school did the rest

Anywhere between three weeks to days before the block starts.

I'm in the ADN program at Phoenix College, in Phoenix, AZ. We start Aug. 20 and just had orientation Aug. 1. We were given a paper to choose our top three choices of facilities for clinicals but will not find out the location or the days/times until the first day of class. (I totally disagree with the way they do things, but I guess they just have to do it that way). It sucks because I can't plan ahead if I don't know what days and times I'll be in clinical. Maybe block 2 we will know sooner, but I doubt it. Good luck!

Ours is the same as yours. We do not have any idea about our schedule/hospitals until 1-2 weeks before. Its just something that I've learned to live with.

Our school starts August 27th, and we still have no idea where or when ours is.

There is only 25 of us. We all go to the same clinical site, at the same time. For the entire program the clinical is on the same days, at the same time. Our classes are also on the same days and times, the entire program. Even our tests, are at the same time throughout the program.

We're really lucky. I can't imagine how some people only find out a week before what time clinicals are. Especially if you have children or a work schedule.

I guess for some reason it makes me feel a little better knowing I'm not the only one. I actually have 3 friends at 3 different schools by me. One finds out before the previous semester ends, the second one found out 3 months before the start, and the last one finds out like the first-before the previous semester ends. WHen I heard that I was curious why my school sucks so bad at this and then I was curious how many schools out there are like mine :)

When I was in school, we had little-if any--say in our clinical schedule. We had zero say in our clinical sites. Usually we would not know what either was until shortly before clinicals started. They did tell us on day 1--and reminded up frequently--that almost all clinicals were on Tue and/or Thurs so to keep those two days free while in school.

If we wanted to switch to a different clinical section, first it would be the instructor's decision as to whether they would allow it. If they did, then it it was up to us to find someone in another clinical section that would switch with us...and if we couldn't find that person to switch with, too bad--we were stuck.
