Just Failed a Drug Test to get into Nursing School Can I take another one

Published

At My College LPN Program,

we are required to do background checks and drug screens

10 panel

I just had one done and Came back positive for marijuana

My question is because we are also required to submit paperwork signed and stamped from the doctor and I had the drug test but did not get my paperwork signed and stamped.

Can I go to another facility say next week when I Know I'll be clean and get it redone with my physical and have it signed and stamped there?

Will I still be able to go into the school?

P.S I have already stopped for 22 days, I guess my system needs a lil longer and No I will not be smoking in school or work.

Thanks For the Replies

If you're so sure you'd be ok with doing what you planned, why ask for advice? Did you expect anyone to say anything other than what was stated?

Was looking for input from those with experience, isn't that why we ask questions?

"I'm sure they would see it if They looked at the first hospital I went to, hoping some kind of privacy laws could prevent that."

Failing a drug test and making that type of statement raises a huge red flag. Wow.

Good for you for stopping 22 days ago. Keep it up! Best of luck!

This will be harsh, but it is how it is. You should have quit long ago and your response that you will not smoke before clinical is alarming. It implies you plan to continue smoking, just not on class and clinical day. The effects of marijuana can last days, especially for a heavy user. For your urine screen to show positive then you are a moderate to heavy user. You should have quit when you started your pre reqs. Nursing apparently isn't worth it to you if you are will to throw all you hard work down the drain for a high.

I used to be a heavy smoker. And I mean HEAVY. I quit my second semester of pre reqs because it wasn't worth it to me. More than just the drug screen, if you get caught during a sale, or get a ticket and are deemed impaired, or get caught with it on you and are convicted of possession, your career would be done before it starts. It is not all about the test. It is everything else that could put use on your record.

Most likely, the positive screen will be reported to your school. The hospital is aware you are a student, and most will report. For my program, you get drug screened on a random date. They results get sent directly to the program director and THEN the clinical site. If for some reason you are lucky enough that your positive is not reported to your program director, count your blessings and quit now before you get caught again or perform unsafe patient care and risk lives. Also, many programs and clinical sites will randomly screen throughout the program. So you could pass next week, keep using, and then fail a random screen later. Also if a patients accuses you of use, (which we know you will be cognitively slower than usual and have a general look of a stoner) then you will be screened on the spot. The fact that you don't seem to think this is big deal shows immaturity, possible addiction, and poor ethics. I for one would not want you to be a nurse ever unless you can quit for good like a professional nurse should. I don't think MJ should be illegal, unless you are in a position such as a healthcare provider, where you are responsible for peoples lives.

Thank You Carly,

Thank You Mrs Boots,

I don't have any intention of smoking while in the program I don't know where people keep reading that.

Again I've applied, and been abstaining and I guess 22 days just wasn't enough.

I'm hoping because I went to the Hospital as an outpatient, and was referred there by my doctor who has his own office and practice that it won't be reported to director.

I don't know if its up to the hospital testing me or up to my doctor to send those results

I too am a former weed-head, however that was 26 years ago pre-kids, pre-nursing. I agree it is a maturity factor, we all have to grow up sometime, and even though I personally don't think marijuana should be illegal, it is. I wasn't so upset about the smoking as I was about the "trial run" comment.

I am not passing judgment on you, I just want you to be sure you are really ready for the huge responsibility of being a nurse and having people's lives in your hands.

Regular smokers have reported positive drug test results after 45 days since last use and heavy smokers have reported positive tests 90 days after quitting.
How Long Does Marijuana Stay in the Body?

Since you are a female (and females naturally have more body fat than males), the THC metabolites tend to be stored in body fat and released into the urine slowly over time. So it might be up to 90 days after you last smoked pot before your urine screens come back 'clean.'

Take a quick trip down to Mexico or here to the Caribbean and see the lives your "harmless" weed destroys. Better yet, take a road trip closer to home to Chicago, where more than half of the marijuana used in the USA is rebagged and distributed to the rest of the country. See all the people who are gunned down in broad daylight, including innocent women and children, in the endless drug wars that you fuel with your habit. Take a long, hard look at your motivations for using an illegal substance that kills tens of thousands of people per year (not directly, but indirectly). Honestly, it sickens me to know that people simply won't look beyond the end of their blunt at the real cost of marijuana and other illegal drugs. I'm not speaking to the legalization of drugs one way or another - but as long as they are illegal, the blood of innocent people is on your hands if you buy them from the powerful and murderous cartels.

I actually smoked weed about 4 days before my drug test was done and it came back negative. I swear, I think it's based on how much water you drink, IMHO. I drank several GALLONS of water to flush my system out.

I have zero personal experience myself, family member, or friends when it comes to the effects of marijuana.
That indicates to me that they really don't want to stop and will relapse during school as soon as the stress of nursing school gets to be too much for them.

Hmmm.
