Johns Hopkins University BSN/MSN Fall 2011

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Greetings Everyone!

I know this is early to make a thread for the Fall 2011 Hopkins Applicants! But still, it is better to start getting ready than waiting at the last minute! I highly suggest everyone start getting your letters of recommendations, and just hide it until you are ready to apply. I will be applying and submitting my application around September 2010 as an early decision applicant for Fall 2011.

I have to finish up Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Developmental Psychology, and one more chemistry class this coming Summer 2010. During the Fall of 2010 and Spring 2011, I will be finishing up just general requirements like history, Microbiology, English Composition, Statistics, some foreign languages, and humanities (elective classes).

I will be applying for the BSN Traditional Program considering I do not have a degree, thus, I am not qualified to apply for the accelerated program. I'm really excited about this.

I will only be applying to UPenn and Johns Hopkins University for my BSN traditional program. If I do not get accepted, I will be attending my current university's school of nursing. I am already in the university's nursing program, but I don't start clinical preceptorship until 2 years from now.

I will graduate May 2013 regardless where I go. Either JHU or UPenn or stay at my current university.

If I will be accepted at either JHU or UPenn, then definitely I will be attending those schools! I love nursing research, and I want to learn more about research and providing quality care to our patients.

We will see how it will go. I have six months until I submit my application to both schools. Remember time is running fast.

Hope everyone are doing well on their pre-requisites! Good luck to all!

Feel free to post around so we can help each other for Fall 2011! I've read the thread for the JHU Fall 2010. I've noticed everyone in that thread got accepted, and some waitlisted! Its a good sign!

Have a wonderful day!

I couldn't make it to the chat session today, was anything said about the decisions regarding the Master's portion? Such as any sort of a timeline? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry anxiouslywaiting...I posted directly after you!

Unfortunately, they were somewhat vague regarding a timeline for the MSN decisions. Basically it was a "you'll know when we know" response the question of when we might be notified. Hopefully soon though! I don't know how much longer I can wait!

Other information from the chat that might be worth mentioning:

--They said that it's VERY strongly recommended for students to have a car in order to get to clinical sites (some could potentially be in DC). Although a car is (almost absolutely) necessary, they did say that the campus/surrounding area is getting more and more bike friendly if you're looking for another option to get to class

--Because they people from SON were from the Admissions Office, they were not able to provide detailed information regarding financial aid, but they did say that the Office of Financial Aid is very helpful with any questions. Also, they have NOT yet finished sending out Merit Scholarship notification

--Clinicals will begin the 1st or 2nd week of class. They recommended getting at least 2 pairs of scrubs and they must be purchased from the bookstore before the start of clinicals.

--They expect ~130 people in each class (Accelerated, Traditional) and clinicals will be about 6-8 students. The admit rate was 62%.

--Information regarding books will be posted on the website prior to the start of class. We'll be getting more information about this as we get closer.

--If possible, it sounds beneficial to find housing along the JH shuttle route, so that would be a good question to ask when researching neighborhoods.

I can't remember any more specifics off the top of my head, but I was once again impressed with how friendly, helpful, and warm the JH staff was. Working with them during the admissions process has been such a positive experience and VERY different from my interactions with the admissions staff at other schools. To be honest, It's one of the things that has set JH apart for me as I make this decision. Their admissions and financial aid staff seem to be a good representation of the quality of people that you'll be working with for the next few years.

tsorfia -

Well said! This is precisely why I've chosen JHU. With each interaction, I'm reminded why this is the right program for me. I can't wait for May...

Did anyone in the BSN or ABSN program apply for the merit scholarship? If so, did you receive any sort of acknowledgment of receipt of your application? Also, has anyone out there received a decision re the scholarship?

PS - thanks, tsorfia, for all the helpful info from the chat session!

I got a call a week ago (last Fri) about the merit scholarship- I was told earlier that if I didn't receive it they wouldn't let me know- try calling the school? I'm fairly certain they've informed every one by now

WHEN are they going to notify MSN-ers!! Talk about a long waiting period!!!::lol2:

sunny cal,

sorry I didnt read your message properly! What helped you make your decision?

Hi SpNar,

I'M sorry for the late reply! Have you made your decision yet? The pros of the longer program is that I can get involved with more clubs, events, and opportunities than in the accelerated since the pace will be slower. The tuition is about the same for both but obviously the living expenses are more for the trad.

Good luck with your decision!

I'm not sure how many of you have heard back regarding your MSN, but I was already notified I was waitlisted for mine. So perhaps it is a good thing if you haven't heard yet?!

Wish you the best of luck!

im a 2012 jhu traditional bsn who was accepted as bsn/msn

just wanted to provide my $.02 about traditional vs accelerated

i actually graduated from ucsd 2010 and was accepted into absn but b/c i didnt graduate until june (absn starts in may), i was moved to trad and am happy i was.

trad students get 2*6 week winter breaks and 1 summer break. its nice to take a break as its rather fast paced imo. 1st semester is okay. 2nd semester, they start grouping midterms. this week i had 1 on monday, 1 on tues. next week i have one on monday, and another on tuesday again. 1st semester you have 1 clinical day biweekly 8hr shift. 2nd semester 2 clinical days/week 8hr shift. 3rd semester same as 2nd but 1 shift is 12hr. 4th semester 1clinical/week. a number of my classmates are happy they chose trad and wonder how absn students do it. one of my lab advisors say you can tell whose absn b/c they have a zombie face :3

summers are nice to have for traveling or working ($ and/or experience). quite a few students get cna positions as we are certified after 1st semester (after fingerprinting, paperwork, fee). fyi - this allows us to work only in baltimore. maybe some other places, you would have to check. i know california requires you to take an exit exam (a friend of mine did that so she could work in norcal this summer). i highly recommend the cna summer position as its good experience and is a good opportunity at getting your foot in the door, potentially giving you a job opp after you graduate.

absn - 3 week winter breaks (personally, i thought my 6 wk break was excessive. idk if it was too long that i lost motivation or felt sluggish b/c i didnt keep up to speed on my usual school routine (studying and what not). No summers. But you finish 1 semester faster! Some students say baltimore grows on them, some dislike it so much that they are going to reapply for msn elsewhere even though they already got accepted bsn/msn. Im not a fan of baltimore, but the proximity to other east coast cities isnt bad (NYC, DC is my playground).

lmk if you have any more Qs. this might seem biased as im a trad, sorry!
