Johns Hopkins University BSN/MSN Fall 2011

Published

Greetings Everyone!

I know this is early to make a thread for the Fall 2011 Hopkins Applicants! But still, it is better to start getting ready than waiting at the last minute! I highly suggest everyone start getting your letters of recommendations, and just hide it until you are ready to apply. I will be applying and submitting my application around September 2010 as an early decision applicant for Fall 2011.

I have to finish up Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Developmental Psychology, and one more chemistry class this coming Summer 2010. During the Fall of 2010 and Spring 2011, I will be finishing up just general requirements like history, Microbiology, English Composition, Statistics, some foreign languages, and humanities (elective classes).

I will be applying for the BSN Traditional Program considering I do not have a degree, thus, I am not qualified to apply for the accelerated program. I'm really excited about this.

I will only be applying to UPenn and Johns Hopkins University for my BSN traditional program. If I do not get accepted, I will be attending my current university's school of nursing. I am already in the university's nursing program, but I don't start clinical preceptorship until 2 years from now.

I will graduate May 2013 regardless where I go. Either JHU or UPenn or stay at my current university.

If I will be accepted at either JHU or UPenn, then definitely I will be attending those schools! I love nursing research, and I want to learn more about research and providing quality care to our patients.

We will see how it will go. I have six months until I submit my application to both schools. Remember time is running fast.

Hope everyone are doing well on their pre-requisites! Good luck to all!

Feel free to post around so we can help each other for Fall 2011! I've read the thread for the JHU Fall 2010. I've noticed everyone in that thread got accepted, and some waitlisted! Its a good sign!

Have a wonderful day!

I will also be applying for Fall 2011. Believe it or not, it's already March 20th. Wow. That means we'll be applying in less than 6 months. I will be applying for the traditional BSN into MSN (FNP most likely), not the ABSN because I will be graduating from my university in June 2011, that is when the ABSN starts :(. So it's okay if we don't have some of our prereqs done before we apply to the school right? I took intro psychology (but JHU does not accept it). I'm taking anatomy right now (6 hour saturday class. yikes). i will be taking Statistics this quarter. During the summer Microbio and Physiology. During the fall, and spring I will have to take Chem (for other schools), Nutrition, and Psychology.

I'm really excited but nervous about how fast all of this is approaching. Do you know how competitive it is to get into the program?

Jiwonkim89,

Wonderful! I know its a bit early to start up a thread, but trust me it takes a lot of work to apply, especially to a competitive nursing school. I would like to ask you, how many chemistry classes are you taking? Because we need 6-8 units of chemistry, which means, we would most likely take two chemistry classes total.

I am taking college chemistry right now, which has 4 units, and I will be taking Chemistry 215: Intro. to Organic and Biochemistry, which has 3 units. It will have a total of 7 units which is enough for the chemistry requirement.

Going to Anatomy AND Physiology, thats good you are taking it now and physiology during the summer! WoW! Thats a long time! I will be taking Anatomy and Physiology I for Summer I (June 6 to June 30, 2010) and Anatomy and Physiology II (July 6 to July 30, 2010) I will be taking about 20 units this summer, it will include Statistics, A&P I and II, Developmental Psychology, and Organic and Biochemistry. I know it will be a tough semester, but I want to finish all of these before submitting my application on September 2010. I will only need to finish English Composition, Microbiology, History, and Anthropology for Fall 2010 and I'm technically done, but my mom wants me to take Spring 2011 classes also just to add to my electives. I will be taking Biology and Math Classes for Spring 2011 because I like science and math.

I'm only doing the BSN Traditional, obviously, I don't have a Bachelors degree yet =( I know, well thats okay we get to be classmates! Ha! I pray that we both get in! Now, for the MSN program, you will need to take a GRE test I believe. I hope you do well on that.

Don't forget sociology too, unless you've completed it already.

YES! WE CAN STILL APPLY WITHOUT FINISHING THE PRE-REQUISITES! as long as you finished it before matriculation. =D :yeah:

Seriously I'm telling you, I can't believe I'm on this thread for Fall 2011 already. I was looking at thread for Fall 2006 and 2007, I was still in high school, and now It's my turn to apply! Ha! Time is just so fast! :o

Yes! FNP is really good, especially if you want to teach nursing at a university in the future, because FNP covers all aspect of nursing from child to senior. I love ER or Critical Care, most likely I will be working in those areas. My plan is to get either my E-R NP or CRNA (Nurse Anesthetist), I love chemistry! I love chemicals! =D Fun Fun Fun! LOL!

Just be sure to have a minimum of a 3.4 GPA so you will be competitive! Scholarships starts at 3.85 to 4.0! Its the half-tuition scholarship one.

Post here if you have more question! Lets help together to get in to Hopkins 2011! Woot! :yeah:

Fall of 2011

Everyone! You can start applying to the school of nursing already!

Don't forget:

November 1, 2010 - Deadline for Early Decision

January 15, 2011 - Deadline for Regular Decision

Good luck y'all!

Wow - that is quite a load to take over the summer! Just remember that having prereqs completed prior to applying is only of value if you have solid grades in them. If you pile on too many hardcore classes and then don't do well in one or two of them, it is worse than applying with them still outstanding. So, I wish you all the luck in the world, but don't kill yourself this summer! ;)

Haha! Don't worry I won't kill myself.

Intersession: Organic and Biochemistry

Summer I: A&P I and Statistics

Summer II: A&P II and Life-Span Psych.

I'm not taking in all in one lol! Thats just crazy!

I've always taken 20 units every semester.

Check your email! =D

I will NOT be applying to UPENN! Only JHU, Boston, and NYU. =D

Specializes in Surgical ICU nurse.

Hey I am a Philly native and UPenn is a really nice school. It is Ivy League you know....Philadelphia has plenty of hospitals and a nice night life.

Hi everyone! Nice to see that there are already threads up for fall 2011. I'll also be applying for JHU (either traditional or accelerated) for entrance in fall 2011, probably regular decision. I'm graduating from undergrad at the end of may :D with a BA in psychology. I'm hopefully taking the gre sometime in July, and returning home to CA in August to begin working on apps and finishing up pre-reqs. So far, I've completed Statistics, General Biology, Nutrition, and I'm currently taking Intro Chemistry this semester. In the fall, I'm planning on taking Anatomy, Microbiology, and Lifespan Psych. In the spring, I'll take Physiology and perhaps another course...maybe Organic Chemistry?

I'm curious-- what kind of work & volunteer experience do you all have? I'm currently trying to figure out what to do outside of classes/studying for the summer and fall. I've heard that it really helps to have healthcare/hospital experience, but typically that won't be paid. In terms of earning money on the side, do you guys think it'd be more beneficial to take on some kind of research assistant job (which I'm not that interested in..but probably looks better on a resume) or do something that's not quite as "related" like waitressing, etc? Any input would be realllly helpful! :) Hope we can all keep this thread active and help each other as we apply!!

I surely do wish their program was online. Lookng into online programs for me. Barinbass

Well right now I am volunteering at a Pediatrics Hematology/ Oncology clinic at the ucla hospital. I'm really fortunate to attend the school right now, so student volunteering is very accesible. I work in the office on Wednesday and shadow NPs and MDs at their clinicals on Thursday. However, I want to apply for acute care (neonatal specifically..maybe peds?) instead of primary care...so over the summer, I'm planning to contact a neonatal NP to shadow. Unfortunately, JHU doesn't offer the neonatal specialty. So UPENN is my top choice! I'm still going to apply to JHU though for FNP.

I think it will look good and benefit you personally if you find a volunteer position or a job related to nursing. I don't think it makes any sense for someone to apply to nursing school without some kind of idea of what they're getting themselves into. Of course, volunteering is just a stepping stone but I didn't know the difference between primary care and acute care NP until I started volunteering. That's when I realized that I don't want to do primary care.

Good luck to finishing up those prereqs!!!

I completely agree! Any health related experience you can get will not only give the impression that you have an idea of what you're getting into, but will also help you decide where you want to work as a nurse. I think a good start would be to find a volunteer gig and talk to the staff to see what kind of connections they have. When I started to consider a career in nursing, I began volunteering with in my university's health clinic and in an assisted living facility. Everyone that I met was more than willing to help me out with other nursing/health related contacts. I was lucky enough to then get a job in a pediatrician's office (where I shoot kids!) and as a cardiac research assistant at a well-respected hospital. I'm also taking prereqs at night and the GRE is scheduled for July.

I'll be applying to JHU's accelerated BSN/MSN program. Let's keep this thread alive and continue to support each other as we go through this process. Good luck everyone!!! :D
