Greetings Everyone!
I know this is early to make a thread for the Fall 2011 Hopkins Applicants! But still, it is better to start getting ready than waiting at the last minute! I highly suggest everyone start getting your letters of recommendations, and just hide it until you are ready to apply. I will be applying and submitting my application around September 2010 as an early decision applicant for Fall 2011.
I have to finish up Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Developmental Psychology, and one more chemistry class this coming Summer 2010. During the Fall of 2010 and Spring 2011, I will be finishing up just general requirements like history, Microbiology, English Composition, Statistics, some foreign languages, and humanities (elective classes).
I will be applying for the BSN Traditional Program considering I do not have a degree, thus, I am not qualified to apply for the accelerated program. I'm really excited about this.
I will only be applying to UPenn and Johns Hopkins University for my BSN traditional program. If I do not get accepted, I will be attending my current university's school of nursing. I am already in the university's nursing program, but I don't start clinical preceptorship until 2 years from now.
I will graduate May 2013 regardless where I go. Either JHU or UPenn or stay at my current university.
If I will be accepted at either JHU or UPenn, then definitely I will be attending those schools! I love nursing research, and I want to learn more about research and providing quality care to our patients.
We will see how it will go. I have six months until I submit my application to both schools. Remember time is running fast.
Hope everyone are doing well on their pre-requisites! Good luck to all!
Feel free to post around so we can help each other for Fall 2011! I've read the thread for the JHU Fall 2010. I've noticed everyone in that thread got accepted, and some waitlisted! Its a good sign!
Have a wonderful day!
Jasgop
I just had my interview today for regular decision ABSN-MSN. Pretty much all the questions posted before appeared in the interview. However, I got a few questions that came up that weren't previously mentioned:
- Why did you choose your particular undergraduate institution?
- How many people were in your major?
- What was the average class size in your upper division courses?
I think these were more to get a feel of what my undergraduate career was like and how competitive it could have been. (I am quite certain my undergraduate GPA falls below the average of the applicant pool).
If you're thinking of the CNS specialty (like I am :)), you'd be ask questions about why you are choosing it and what you know about it. My interviewer said that not many people understand what a CNS since it is not as well known as the NP role.
And so the wait begins. Good luck to everyone!
Hi all nurses and future nurses... I'm currently a junior in a 4 year nursing program and have been doing research on what I may like to do after I graduate. I am interested in grad school, but I'm so far in debt that it discourages me. I came across a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant. This really interests me, but I'm nervous to get certified and not have work. Does anyone have any comments on this career choice and if it has promise or not?
Eeep sorry about my edits and double posts.. But to those wondering about housing and options to move..here is some really really great helpful info from a former student:
I am personally leaning towards moving to Mt. Vernon and staying at Henderson House or The Standard :)
"Ilived in the Charles Village area as an undergraduate at JHU for four years. Two years in dorms, and two years in an apartment! It is a developing college town (at least from when I was a freshman/sophomore). All the amenities you'd need like a movie rental place, dry cleaners, shoe repair, grocery store, restaurants, bars, cold stone, Barnes and Noble, Starbucks, retail shop(s), T-Mobil, etc. Here are a few places (in no particular order) in areas I'd suggest* (disclaimer: this is a biased email-it is based on my experiences and for those moving to Baltimore from outside the area):
Charles Village:
1. The Northway: older building, but big apartments, very convenient, can have pets, pretty much all students live here. Near the JHMI shuttle route! I lived here for two years, and now my brother has lived in my old apt for the past 2 years!
2. The Blackstone and Charles: owned by JHU (happened in the past year or so), all students, right across the street from the Undergraduate campus, and near the shuttle route
3. Village Lofts: these are brand new condos right in Charles Village above Starbucks, a Mini Mart, Subway, Chipotle, T-Mobile, etc. Right in the heart of Charles Village!
4. Various Row houses: most people live on Charles St, St. Paul, Calvert, and University. Calvert is as far East as I'd suggest going, Guilford is pushing it, but students do live only about that far East. 29th Street is also another suggested border for houses.
5. The Marylander: older building, but like the others, near the campus, the shuttle route, and almost all students. I have never been inside this building, but walked by it plenty and know that it is pretty popular.
6. Cresmont Lofts: these are nice apartments with quite a few amenities; however this building is a bit off the beaten path.
7. Wyman Towers: right on St. Paul Street, like all others, mostly students, convenient for shops in Charles Village and the shuttle.
8. Guildford Manor: is right next to the Northway.
9. University West (aka: UniWest): older apts, but convenient. I lived here for a summer! It is right across the field from the Lacrosse Field, and close to the JHU Athletic Center.
10. University One: this is a condo building right across from the Marylander and Cattycorner to the Northway.

Mt. Vernon Area:
Mt Vernon is historic, eclectic, artsy neighborhood with few to no chain stores and restaurants, lots of pets, gardens etc. This could be the neighborhood for you!? It also has a quality grocery store (a Superfresh, rather than an independently owned grocery store), close to a farmers market (during season), as well as bars, restaurants, dry cleaners, bead store, museums, little parks! It is approximately 5-6 blocks north of the Inner Harbor (within walking distance-I do it all the time, especially when the weather is nice).
1. Waterloo Place Apartments: this is where I live, and a lot of other nursing, medical, public health, Peabody, and staff of JHU live! All apartments have their own washers and driers, central air, there's a work out facility, albeit small, but it's better than nothing, and a pool. It's gated and only 1-2 stops away from the Medical/East Baltimore Campus on the JHMI Shuttle. Just to give you an idea, my roommate, a nursing student, and I pay roughly $1550 a month in rent and we live in a two bedroom, 2 bath, washer and drier, AC, balcony, dishwasher, disposal, and can have pets. There are other nursing students who live here as well! I think they connected via the forums and/or accepted students day!
2. The Standard: used to be the office building for Standard Oil, but it's now an apt building. Very nice apts, not sure what rent runs, but my guess is it's slightly more than the Waterloo, but that also includes other amenities that you have to pay on your own at the Waterloo. In terms of a pool, the Standard, you have to pay for access to a pool that is not on location...not sure where it is! Another building that nursing students enjoy!
3. Apartments: there are other apartment buildings, rooms for rent, etc throughout Mt Vernon. Ex. Park Charles, Charles Towers, Gallery Towers, Stafford etc.
*here is the link for the Accepted Student forum where you can sometimes find people looking for roommates: Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing | Information For | Accepted Student
Other neighborhoods to consider: Fell's Point (within walking/biking distance from JHU SON), Federal Hill, Canton, Hampden, Harbor East (NYC prices), Butchers Hill, etc. Most of these are not on the shuttle route that I have mentioned! Parking in these neighborhoods is often tight. I know that both in Charles Village and Mt. Vernon, there is street parking, as well as parking garages at an additional cost (on average $100+ dollars a month...) This is what I do in Mt. Vernon! Being from California, I did not know how to parallel park...nor do I want to dig my car out of what little snow we get! But on the flip side, my roommate has a permit and parks on the street-and I hardly ever hear her complain that she can't find a spot!
The Shuttle I kept referring to is the JHMI Shuttle that goes between the Undergraduate Campus/Charles Village area to the East Baltimore/Medical Campus. It is free to all students, staff, faculty, anyone affiliated with JHU, etc. Here is a link for both the schedule and the route. The shuttle pretty much runs from 615am to almost midnight M-F and once an hour on the weekends! It's free and super convenient (especially if you live in Charles Village, Mt. Vernon, or commute via train into Penn Station) or anywhere in between. JHMI to Homewood Shuttle (Upper right hand corner, you will find a link for the schedule and route map!)
As far as turnover, most of the apartment buildings do turn over in the summer, particularly in the Charles Village area (coincides with the end of the school year), but I do know since I live in apt complex with many nursing students, the Waterloo place usually has something (in fact I see some open apts now!!) Since lots of the JHU programs end in May, there should be some turnover! Finding an apt has never been a big issue for anyone that I know of!
I'm sure you can do most of the paperwork, and logistics with an apt/management company from out of state! I know for the Waterloo, I lived in Baltimore that summer and my roommate at the time lived in Phoenix, and the Waterloo was very good about mailing the paperwork to my dad (a cosigner) in California as well as my roommate in Phoenix and her cosigner! So it can be done!

HI Snguy,So I guess Dec 15 isnt' really the deadline for ED decisions huh? Interesting... Did you apply for BSN and MSN or just BSN? I applied for ABSN/MSN/MPH but I only got the decision for ABSN, she said the MSN committee has to meet again regarding the MSN part of my application but I should hear about that decision soon...
Are you a Returned Peace Corps? There are some special scholarships offered to RPCVs in addition to the Merit Scholarships...
Hi Lolita 123! I'm soo sorry I didn't get back to you until now! I stopped getting updates on posts! But anyhow..yes! I don't think the ED deadline for the 15th of December is quite true..i think its more around that time..or they send notification letters out about that time! I must say I have never been so antsy. I didn't get my official acceptance call until the 23rd of January.
Have you heard back regarding your MSN/MPH acceptance yet? I really hope you got in!
I actually applied just for the BSN (TRAD) I'm planning to apply for the masters program afterwards.
I'm not a returned peace corps volunteer, but I looked into the merit scholarship, but feel a little discouraged. Only 5 from the trad. cohort and 5 from the accelerated are chosen..and since there are so many deserving and exceptional applicants they strictly go by merit. All had at least a 3.8 gpa . I've found some other really great scholarships..and am in the process of applying for financial aid through FAFSA and JHU Fin Aid form. I hope you will be able to get the scholarships for RPCV!!
Inspired by Cartwheel, I started a community page for Traditional students of 2013 as well. It is titled
Johns Hopkins University *Traditional Nursing Class of 2013*
Feel free to "like" it. I posted info on some housing and moving option advice from former students :)
I like that we are all so supportive and fostering a community already! :)
WOW Snguy! That is a lot of great information regarding housing! Thank you! It seems like there is a lot of options. I am used to San Francisco's market and it is very competitive!! I am leaning towards a rowhouse with a little yard and not a big apartment building. I talked to one current student and the Upper Fells area seems pretty perfect - only 2 blocks from campus. I like the idea of being able to walk to class. I will definitely start looking at the links you sent. thanks again for all the great info!!
Did you get the undergraduate early decision financing application in the mail? It says the due date is January 15th!! I just got it today. I am assuming that deadline is just for this initial evaluation but not sure. Does anyone have any info on financial aid dealines, etc.?
Hi Lolita! yah that early decision financing form freaked me out quite a bit too! But I really think its just a pre-screening form to get a feel of what sort of aid we could be eligible for, especially since i'm sure none of us was able to get our 2010 tax returns done already. The 2011-2012 Johns Hopkins Financial Aid form is already up and due by March 1st (FAFSA is also due March 1st). I believe the March 1st deadline is for both traditional and accelerated students. Here is a link to the form just in case anyone else needs it :)

I'm glad my massive post helped! hehehe :) A row house sounds really cute and quaint! Im not so familiar with row houses, but hopefully will get to see what they are like and compare which I prefer...apts or row houses :) Regarding row houses, a current student told me:
"Rowhouses generally are advertised about 30-60 days before they are available. Here is it customary to give 60-days notice to your landlord, so that's usually when they post an ad."
Are you going to accepted students day on March 4th? I'm sure it' d be a great time to scope out the neighborhoods and look for potential places to live!
Thank you for all of the info Snguy!!!! I was a little worried about relocating from LA to Baltimore and trying to land a place without even knowing what neighborhood offers what. I have been getting mixed reviews about Baltimore, but I think you laid it out very clearly to show what options we have out there. I can't wait to see what these building and neighborhoods look like come March 4th! Thanks again!!!
Hi Jma2119! I'm so glad my post was helpful! I am also moving from So-Cal to Baltimore. Orange County in fact! I guess we will be in similar situations! what program are you going to be in? :) I'm actually going to be attending the second Accepted Students day on April 8th. It is for the traditional cohort. They decided to split accepted students day this year by either accelerated or traditional students. :)
I too am excited about checking out all the different neighborhoods along with checking out some floorplans for housing! Moving seems a little daunting, but Im thinking of just packing all my stuff in 4 luggages (my bf is flying out w/ me to help me move in) and then renting a zip car to make ikea runs..or wherever I need to go to move and settle in :). Are you going to be shipping your stuff out?

I applied ABSN-MSN Nurse-Midwifery track. When I interviewed the woman who runs the program with Shannendoah U said that they take between 3-5 students from Hopkins each year...so I'm not holding my breath, but I still can't wait to know, one way or the other! :)
