Johns Hopkins Entry into Nursing (MSN) Fall 2021

Published

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to start a thread for the Johns Hopkins Entry into Nursing MSN program for August 2021 applicants. I started my application this week, aiming to get it in well before the November 1st deadline . Anyone else??

I was just admitted into Columbia off the waitlist yesterday (wild). Now I'm deciding between Columbia and JHU. Anyone else in this boat?

Also, fun fact, these are the only two schools I was admitted to LOL. I got outright rejected from OHSU Ashland ABSN, Norwich ABSN, Northeastern, UW ABSN, and waitlisted for Pacific Lutheran, Regis Loretto, and another one that I can't remember. This process is absolutely insane.

Hihi! I was admitted to Penn off the waitlist about a week ago, so now I'm deciding between there and JHU! I'm almost certain I'll choose Penn, however, because the program aligns better with my career goals. I definitely want to be an NP and I was accepted to Penn's BSN-MSN, meaning I don't have to reapply to a school once I'm ready to get my NP specialty. That's really the main difference between Penn and JHU for me. Also location- I'm so unfamiliar with Baltimore, but Philly is really close to NJ, I just feel way more comfortable with the thought of living there.

And I agree with you- the admissions process for nursing school is balls-to-the-wall! I was first accepted at JHU (and I was really surprised, but considering it's ranked as the #1 MSN school, I assumed I'd get in everywhere else) then I was accepted at Northeastern. I was then waitlisted at every other school: Penn, Columbia, and Duke. It's just weird, but I appreciate that JHU seems to be looking for a diverse cohort rather than just an insanely smart cohort (because I really did not have the best grades in undergrad ?)

Congratulations earthbender! Are you planning to work as an RN after school or do you plan to immediately embark onto a NP Program? I have a friend who is doing her DNP at Columbia and she said her classmates who came from the Columbia entry program were able to skip a few classes she had to take, because they already took them during their Columbia Master's...

At Hopkins, 16 credits from MSN Entry into Nursing can also be transferred to its own dnp programs too.

To be honest I'm not sure. Right now I'm really focused on getting my master's in nursing and seeing where that takes me. I don't have really any healthcare experience (studied History in undergrad haha) so I really want to just get some experience/schooling under my belt before I know exactly where my path will lead me.

Sweet, yeah I feel you on Philly, it's also a super fun city (amazing music scene and always sunny apparently). I'm from NY and I went to school in Jersey so I'm actually trying to get a little away and so JHU is more enticing than Columbia haha.

Absurd about the other schools. I was SO surprised about JHU because I was getting rejected everywhere else haha. I honestly didn't think I was going to get into a program but when all hope seemed lost I got the acceptance. I think for me it was a little weird background. I studied History and environmental studies and thought I was going to law school but then some life events led me to nursing. Not the traditional route by any means haha. But that's why I appreciate JHU, because they saw the potential in me and had enough trust in my academic background to give me a shot.

Got it! Let me ask you this, long-term would you see yourself living in NYC or Baltimore? Let's say you have a strong inclination to live in NYC, pursuing the Columbia route now you'd have enough credits you could transfer to their DNP, should you eventually decide do their DNP and live in NYC ... Same for Hopkins (although Hopkins DNP is online, you could do it anywhere, but unsure if Hopkins would accept 16 credits of Columbia)... I know finance/ cost of living, all of those things should be weighed in in your decision, but do try to envision what your future goals may be, as you consider all factors ? Not saying you have to do a DNP, but in case you ever decide to do it, it seems that the majority of schools will take most of the credits from their own institutions  (exceptions do exist of course! I have had friends from the Hopkins MSN program that were able to transfer lot of credits for a NP at an institution elsewhere though)

OMG love the it's always sunny reference ?. Did you get into Columbia's MDE or MDE-DNP? If you're really focused on becoming an RN first and aren't sure whether or not you want a specialty, I would say go JHU!

I am humbled and amazed by the compassion & background of my fellow students at Hopkins Nursing. Some of them were lawyers, flight attendants, worked for Non-Profit, athletes, etc. They come from diversified backgrounds and are stellar individuals! I feel very lucky to be amongst passionate, empathetic, and hardworking individuals ?

This is super helpful info and I really appreciate all of it! Especially since no one in my family is in nursing so other than congratulating me they don't have much in the way of advice. So seriously, thank you!

Haha, I'm actually re-watching it now! As far as program, I only applied to MDE for both Columbia and JHU. Thank you for the insight on which to pick, that is good to know about the specialty, and I don't know exactly what I want to specialize in, so this makes a difference!

Hi, 5th semester MSN Entry into Nursing student here. I share a similar background with you. I did not have any healthcare-related experience prior to entering the program. I find that JHSON's program has given me ample time to gain the amount of experience, knowledge, and skills needed to succeed after graduation. The JHH is right next door to the SON. You can take advantage of the nurse extern program at JHH to gain real-life healthcare experience after finishing the first semester. So by the time you graduate, you will have a year and a half of healthcare experience as Nurse Extern. RN interviews focus way more on patient care experience than what school you go to or what grades you get.

That is so awesome. I would love to take advantage of that!

Compared to some other forums I've been a part of/trolled, this one is by far the nicest group of people I've come into contact with. You guys are really amazing and super positive. Thanks!

earthbender, I also would recommend you join the "Past,Present,Future JHU" webpage on facebook. They have previous topics related to this, and it may help you to look at points that people have considered in the past... I have a feeling this very own topic of Columbia vs JHU may have been already discussed there. Once you are in, just find the "search" box on the page.
