To be precise, they accepted 2 courses - statistics and research, which are graduate courses at the JHU MSN Entry... The 2 other courses I did not have to take at Maryland (I believe it was something equivalent to both leadership course and health promotion course), because they waived those courses out for students who already had a masters in nursing... I don't remember the school... It was a conversation with a friend last year, who had also graduated who had told me "individual X is attending Y University for their masters in NP and they did not have to retake pathophys, pharm, etc. because they accepted those credits from Hopkins."

At my DNP school there can be exams/papers/clinicals all in the same week. They do not allow students to be at clinical during exams/class time, so all students are directed to schedule their clinical time during non-class time. Also speaking from my experience at my school, electives are not P/F. Could be different at different schools. Hope this helps.

Hi Sam, I can't remember which school it was... I'm sorry... I am a graduate of the Hopkins MSN Entry program and I was able to transfer 4 of my MSN classes (about 16 credits) to the University of Maryland DNP program. I did have to take Advanced Patho, Health Assessment and Pharmacology, though, as they did not accept these credits from Hopkins.

This is my understanding, please correct me if I got it wrong: Typically a certificate in nurse practitioner is a "specialization," but not a degree. For example, if one is a family nurse practitioner (with either a MSN or DNP degree in Family Nurse Practitioner) they could do a certificate (often time called post-masters certificate) to specialize in Psychiatric Nurse Practice, for example. One needs to be a nurse practitioner first, to be eligible for a certificate (maybe very few exceptions to this, but program by program?) The Hopkins MSN Entry degree does not graduate MSN Nurse Practitioners, they graduate MSN RN nurses. For example, all NP schools require Advanced Health Assessment, Advanced Pharmacology, Advanced Pathophysiology. At Hopkins MSN Entry, they take the "non-advanced" version of these courses. So graduates of MSN ENTRY at Hopkins typically need to take the advanced version of these courses even if they do their DNP at Hopkins. Exceptions appear to exist. For exampIe, I have heard anedoctally, of one student who graduated from Hopkins MSN Entry and went on to pursue a nurse practitioner degree at a particular school that didn't have them retake these 3 aforementioned "Advanced" courses because they considered that the person already took those courses at the graduate level at Hopkins.

No nursing background prior to the Hopkins MSN Entry.... I did not work while in the program. Some of my colleagues worked as nursing externs or CNA (certified nursing assistant)...

Hi Euna, I graduated in May 2021. I am about to start Nurse Practitioner school at the end of the month. I did not look for a job until the very last minute (because my program strongly discourage students from working and attending school). I found a part-time job that allows me to work 1x a week. It was very easy to find the job, It was a quick click on zip recruiter, then an interview with a recruiter the next day, then hired a week later... Lot of my colleagues found jobs with no issues.

I mostly agree with magicpandora. I had heard a similar thought from nurses before I decided to join JHU MSN entry... If money is a factor, like you said, $100k of additional debt to attend JHU, then it may be worthy going to the least expensive route. Especially if you are intending to go back to school later - You could always do a DNP at Hopkins later on? The pros of JHU is the amazing community of students, access to the hospital, and the "nicety of the reputation of the school" that could be helpful if you ever saw yourself wanting to go become a nursing executive or a Professor. --> is that upfront $100k + in additional debt worth it? depends on the individual goals and comfort level. But you can achieve those things (becoming a nurse executive or a Professor) too by hard working and connecting with peers and other amazing communities elsewhere too! In summary, I think at the end of the day a nursing degree is a nursing degree (sure, you want to choose credentialed, accredited nursing institutions, always!) Best of luck ?

I am humbled and amazed by the compassion & background of my fellow students at Hopkins Nursing. Some of them were lawyers, flight attendants, worked for Non-Profit, athletes, etc. They come from diversified backgrounds and are stellar individuals! I feel very lucky to be amongst passionate, empathetic, and hardworking individuals ?

Got it! Let me ask you this, long-term would you see yourself living in NYC or Baltimore? Let's say you have a strong inclination to live in NYC, pursuing the Columbia route now you'd have enough credits you could transfer to their DNP, should you eventually decide do their DNP and live in NYC ... Same for Hopkins (although Hopkins DNP is online, you could do it anywhere, but unsure if Hopkins would accept 16 credits of Columbia)... I know finance/ cost of living, all of those things should be weighed in in your decision, but do try to envision what your future goals may be, as you consider all factors ? Not saying you have to do a DNP, but in case you ever decide to do it, it seems that the majority of schools will take most of the credits from their own institutions (exceptions do exist of course! I have had friends from the Hopkins MSN program that were able to transfer lot of credits for a NP at an institution elsewhere though)

Congratulations earthbender! Are you planning to work as an RN after school or do you plan to immediately embark onto a NP Program? I have a friend who is doing her DNP at Columbia and she said her classmates who came from the Columbia entry program were able to skip a few classes she had to take, because they already took them during their Columbia Master's...

I sort of wish schools/websites that rank schools would get away with these statistics about admission... Has anyone watched the Netflix documentary "Operation Varsity Blues?" Highly recommended. The whole number thing/ hard to get into "game" that US educational system keeps afloat has caused some issues in the US.
