Johns Hopkins Entry into Nursing (MSN) Fall 2021

Published

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to start a thread for the Johns Hopkins Entry into Nursing MSN program for August 2021 applicants. I started my application this week, aiming to get it in well before the November 1st deadline . Anyone else??

Hello! Thank you so much for your response! I am curious, when you say the location is a con, do you mean Baltimore itself or do you mean where JHU is specifically located in the city? Do you have recommendations on where to live within Baltimore? Also, all that you said is very interesting, I am currently trying to decide if I should go into this program or if I should get an ABSN degree instead. It seems like this program has great instructors and gives you great structure but also sounds like the cost is very high.

Yes, I mean Baltimore.

I lived at 929 Apt close to JHSON building for convenience.

Cost was definitely a top determining factor for me.

I’m curious what people think now that the semester has started. Have I uprooted my life to go to online school?

Sweet, yeah I feel you on Philly, it's also a super fun city (amazing music scene and always sunny apparently). I'm from NY and I went to school in Jersey so I'm actually trying to get a little away and so JHU is more enticing than Columbia haha.

Absurd about the other schools. I was SO surprised about JHU because I was getting rejected everywhere else haha. I honestly didn't think I was going to get into a program but when all hope seemed lost I got the acceptance. I think for me it was a little weird background. I studied History and environmental studies and thought I was going to law school but then some life events led me to nursing. Not the traditional route by any means haha. But that's why I appreciate JHU, because they saw the potential in me and had enough trust in my academic background to give me a shot.

Earth bender, did you do anything specifically with CUSON in order to get recognized off the waitlist? Provide any followups?

Hello,

I'll be graduating this August from this program. I am originally from California. However, I plan to work in Baltimore, MD, for about a year before returning.

Since California is not a compact state, would it be best to take the NCLEX in California? And then transfer the license over to Maryland?

Also, how long does it take to transfer license from California to Maryland?

any clarity on this process would help!

Thank you!

Hey,

I graduated this past May, and am also from California, but decided to stay in Baltimore for a few years before heading back home. I will be obtaining my Maryland license, if you get a job here, you typically start within the month, for example, my start date is July 31st, and my test date is July 11. You need about 3 weeks for Hopkins to process etc, if that's where you decide to work, I believe. From my understanding, it takes some time for you to be applicable to take the NCLEX in Cali, I have some friends who aren't beginning work until October or next Spring who've also graduated this past May 2023. And who have also not received their ATT. I will be applying for my California license closer to when I decide to move back, to make it a little easier on me.

You should apply for and take the NCLEX where you are planning to work initially. When you are ready to move back to CA you can apply for licensure by endorsement.

If you want a compact license I believe you have to be a resident in that state w/ the correct ID but I don't think it would be worth it if you would want to end up in CA which is not a compact state. But you would still be eligible for a MD license. Personally, I just graduated in May and I'm moving back to CA to work and I got my CA ATT before my friends staying in MD so the process went very smooth for me.

Same. I graduated this May on the 25th and I'm scheduled to take my NCLEX with the California Board of Nursing in 18 days (ack!) I received my ATT June 7th so it took 2 weeks and one day.  I will say that I started getting all of my materials ready in December and sent my fingerprinting cards by mail ASAP so I got my ATT super fast.

Sometimes I think it's not the CA Board of Nursing that is the issue but more the standard of hiring new grads in that state. Residencies will take your application before you're an RN, but any position outside of these hospital residencies won't look at your application until you are officially an RN.

After you get your Maryland license, I would suggest getting your materials together (pre-nursing school transcripts) ASAP. They want to see that you have their specific prerequisites surrounding communication courses, intro to Psychology, and others. Doesn't matter if you're a first-time NCLEX taker or transferring, they want all of this documentation.
