Hi Everyone,
I wanted to start a thread for the Johns Hopkins Entry into Nursing MSN program for August 2021 applicants. I started my application this week, aiming to get it in well before the November 1st deadline . Anyone else??

Of course I did. I'm not worried. I'm from there, so I know some areas that are more affordable. I don't plan on living in a million-dollar neighborhood. I'm used to living within my means, practicing frugality. I've thought about all my living arrangement options. Another option is also travel nursing that pays up to $8 and $10 thousand a month, and they now take new grads with only 6 months experience.
Hi!
I emailed the admin office and they said decisions would come out end of March but they’re hoping for sooner- they said they received a lot of apps!!
As for the previous comment, I live in CA & got rejected from UCLA and UCSF! So JHU is the last school I’m waiting to hear back! I love CA, and the cost of living is high, but I rent an apartment with a few friends from College and it’s super cheap! For anyone that is thinking of moving here, there are a lot of facebook pages where college/ grad students advertise they need housemates, so I would advise to join the colleges facebook page! My goal is to work in CA, because the pay is way higher. I have friends who are RN and have their MSN and the average pay is 120K!
Good luck to everyone applying and congrats on those of you who have gotten acceptances!!
Also I love how everyone on this thread is truly thinking about the cost of tuition and living, prior to even knowing where they will go!
I have never seen such detailed & thoughtful comments on any other thread, so thank y’all for the transparency!
I didn’t even realize how high JHU was compared to other universities and the lack of scholarships!
Here in CA, it seems people are less worried about that because the jobs pay really well here and the chance to pay off your loans is in the foreseeable future- hope this can ease some worry!!

I love to hear that!! Thank you for sharing. I would not know half of what I do about planning for a nursing career if it weren't for people like you who share this kind of information. As far as the FB pages, do you mean search for the local universities in CA on FB? Or the school itself? That would be a great idea. I heard the highest paying in CA is the bay area. Is that correct? Do you know the new grad rate in San Diego? I wish you the best. I hope you get accepted at JHUSON.

I have also found this thread to be incredibly helpful in learning about JHU. It’s really true about CA, nurses are very well paid. I once met a nurse at UCSF who said she makes Just as much money as she would as an NP.

Yah no problem!
thank you so much!!??
so for example, I went to UCSD and UCSD had a facebook page called “UCSD off campus housing” where everyone would talk about rooms or apartments they are looking for or had open! If you can find those pages for your prospective school it will save you some time & you know your housing w other students!! I live in a really nice apartment near the beach w two girls from college and only pay 800! I have my own bathroom and walk in closet and it’s walking distance from the university!!
also I’m not sure about the Bay Area, nurses are paid really great in Northern California and in southern CA! It’s actually insane!

Wow! I miss the beach! I grew up in So Cal and left after starting my family. I know where I'm going as a new grad now. That's amazing!
I also want to add for those who are looking to work in CA. It is easy to get new grad position but you need to look in a more secluded area such as Bakersfield, Long Beach, etc. Also remember to time your licensing well! CA require out-of-state grad to apply in person for faster processing time, otherwise expect to wait 1-2 month to get your license after passing NCLEX.
I also want to practice in CA, which is why I turned down Columbia for UCLA (I got accepted off the waitlist :D) for the purpose of network and licensing.
In general, it is harder to get any hospital position in bay area because well, everyone know they pay nurses the best. My bf went to CSUEB BSN program and it took him 6 months to find a job in the hospital where he volunteered for 3 years, did his externship, and he even got a relative who work there. His starting salary as a new nurse was $75/hour. Even with his connection and history, it was pretty hard for him to land a job in that hospital. The competition is INSANE for bay area, so just be prepared. Most of my friends ended up working in SoCal for a couple of years, then they apply for Bay area position. This is why Bay area nursing school is among the hardest to get into (eg, CSUEB only accept 60 out of 1000 applicants for their BSN program)

Also, looking through the JHU Fall 2020 thread, there seemed to be a very large window in which people were getting decisions (anywhere from last week of February to first week of April [!!]). You can see the first decisions on page 11 of the thread and the later decisions on page 18. And it seemed like people were getting accepted off the waitlist between March and May.

For a school that does not offer needs-based, JHUSON gave me $35,000 scholarship right off the bat. But that's not enough for their price tag...not for me. Duke offers more scholarships. Look into HRSA scholarships. My plan as a new grad is to find employment in California where the pay is the highest so I can get my loans paid off fast.
