Johns Hopkins BSN/MSN Fall 2010 Anyone?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi all - maybe I am jumping the gun, but has anyone else begun working on their applications for Summer/Fall 2010 admission?

I plan on applying for direct entry to JHU, UCSF, Yale, Columbia, and Vanderbilt. With the exception of UCSF's 9/1 deadline, the rest seem to be due between 11/1 and 12/1. Although UCSF has the closest deadline, I am stressing the most about the essays for JHU. Anyone started them yet?

Also, does anyone plan on attending the open house that JHU is having in September? I would love to go, but I am in California, so I have to decide if it is worth the $$$. I am thinking I might be better off saving the money to fly out for the interview (positive thinking here).

Anyway, I would love to compare notes with anyone applying, or anyone who applied last year.

Thanks and good luck! :D

Hey Steve, I am RPCV and I attended an online admissions FAQ chat. I would suggest you do that, too, if you want to interact with admissions before July. That was really helpful to answer my questions about my chances of admission. I specifically remember during the chat these two comments which gave me lots of hope: "We love our RPCV's!" and "We will admit any RPCV who is qualified" (meaning, who has the prereq's, gpa, etc.) Also, they said that last year they were able to award all RPCV Fellows with at least $12,000 scholarship OR grant. So, as long as you have the minimum requisite grades in the prerequisites, you will definitely get in. That is what another RPCV friend of mine told me. I got in! Good luck.

Wow! I knew there was a reason I did Peace Corps..hahaha! Thanks for the info. Im so glad i posted on here. The support is helpful. I cant wait to start my pre-reqs in August and get my application sent in.

Steve, really, I don't think you'll have any problem at all! Like others said, just explain frankly and directly exactly what happened during your undergrad degree. I had some family problems during my undergrad years that caused me to have a few semesters' worth of really horrible grades. The admissions office encouraged me to send in a supplemental paragraph or two, in addition to the required essays. I simply described exactly what happened and why I feel those grades were not a reflection of my ability... apparently it must have worked. :)

What amazing things you're doing now! It's pretty clear that you have a passion for the field, so as long as your stress this and are clear about how nursing will help you excel in your goals, I think you'll be a shoe-in. My impression is that the SON (unlike a lot of other schools) has a strong interest in applicants who have followed a somewhat convoluted path that brought them to JHU. They know that life happens, and are certainly more interested in who you are now, not what you did then.

Good luck!

Hi, a couple questions for you all:

Has anyone who applied ONLY to the ABSN been accepted?

Also, for those that received the financial aid email, did you already apply for financial aid, or not?

It's starting to get tough waiting...and these unprecedented snowstorms are delaying things even more with the university closed so far this week. Hopefully, they will reopen tomorrow and the balls will start rolling again.

Anyone else in the same boat?

I wasn't accepted. I got my denial letter a couple of days ago. Applied to the ABSN, regular decision.

Hey Hoswer Doogie. I applied only to ABSN and was notified of my acceptance. I received the financial aid email on Feb 4 (but have yet to apply for financial aid), called the admissions office to clarify, and was told during that phone call that I was in. Sylvia Lee from admissions sent a congratulatory email on Feb 6 stating that acceptance letters will be delayed due to the blizzards. Hope that answers your questions. Good luck!

This is a question for those who have been accepted. I found out today from Financial Aid that they will not be sending out financial aid information until April! That is one month after the deposit deadline. I am not sure how to deal with this. I've been accepted to a few other programs that are sending me their financial aid information right away. I can't imagine declining those programs for Hopkins (even though it's my #1 choice) blindly. I mean, what if they grant me $0 aid? With the deposit deadline fast approaching, I am curious what others who have been accepted are planning to do. Are you going to commit to Hopkins and hope that everything turns out OK?

Is anyone else still waiting to hear? I am convinced I have been rejected and I haven't received a letter due to the snow storms.

Hey Marinara, I am in a similar situation. Except JHU is my first acceptance and I am waiting on six other decisions. I won't hear from those until AFTER the deposit is due. Financial aid will also be a big factor in my decision. SO---I am going to fork over the deposit most likely to buy myself more time. I know they hate for people to do that, but the timing with all the different nursing schools is very disjointed and I have no other choice. I want to be a nurse!!

My suggestion to you is to call FA back and ask them to tell you their history of providing financial aid. For example, how much was someone with your financial situation offered last year and/or what percent of students' need is met by financial aid packages. Some schools actually advertise that they meet 100% of students' needs (through loan programs, mostly). Good luck!

Hi Marinara and sara,

I'm in a similar situation as well. I'm still waiting to hear about acceptance from one school and they claim they will give us our aid packages by march 1st. i'm waitlisted at another, which complicates things even further.

I'm feeling really good about hopkins, so I'm definitely putting my deposit down.

I do feel like i will be sort of blindly committing, money-wise, but as thats the only option they are giving us, I'm taking it! loans loans loans!

calling FA is a good idea. i might do that also....once the school reopens!

good luck with your decision!

Thanks for your thoughts!

I am pretty clueless about the whole "deposit" thing. Is it a firm commitment, saying "Yes, I will go to this school no matter what the financial aid award says, and I am canceling my applications to all the other programs." Or is it saying, "Yes, please hold my place while I continue to figure things out." When is the real "commitment step" when you tell the school you are DEFINITELY coming? Is it the deposit, or is it later on? If I've been admitted to two programs that are both awesome, and their deposits are due only days apart but one has given me financial aid info and the other (Hopkins) won't have financial aid info until April, would it be OK to give the deposit to both until I have the full financial aid picture? Or is that cheating? I just don't get this whole process - would love some clarity!

marinara,

from reading threads in previous years, depositing at two schools is not uncommon, especially due to FA issues. you'll just lose out on the money is all. no school can make you go if you choose to rescind your intent of enrollment.

i'd rather see you at penn though, with me.
