Johns Hopkins BSN/MSN Fall 2010 Anyone?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi all - maybe I am jumping the gun, but has anyone else begun working on their applications for Summer/Fall 2010 admission?

I plan on applying for direct entry to JHU, UCSF, Yale, Columbia, and Vanderbilt. With the exception of UCSF's 9/1 deadline, the rest seem to be due between 11/1 and 12/1. Although UCSF has the closest deadline, I am stressing the most about the essays for JHU. Anyone started them yet?

Also, does anyone plan on attending the open house that JHU is having in September? I would love to go, but I am in California, so I have to decide if it is worth the $$$. I am thinking I might be better off saving the money to fly out for the interview (positive thinking here).

Anyway, I would love to compare notes with anyone applying, or anyone who applied last year.

Thanks and good luck! :D

I just got my acceptance call for JHUSON Traditional 2010 (BSN-MSN Pediatric NP)! :D I am so excited to meet everyone and I wish all of you who are still waiting the best of luck--hang in there!

hi everyone! i'm new to the thread, just found out i am waitlisted for the accelerated BSN/MSN program, but they are offering me a seat for the traditional BSN/MSN program. I've got into Columbia and USD and I'm really debating on which one to attend (still waiting to hear from UCLA).

are there any current JHUSON students out there now who wouldn't mind exchanging a couple e-mails with me? :)

and congrats to all the accepted applicants!

Congratulations DizzyMissLizzy! As someone who is starting the traditional program this fall of course I think you should go the traditional route ;)

Seriously though - it is certainly a tough decision. For me, the ability to decompress during semesters combined with having more time to take advantage of the wonderful opportunities that Hopkins offers made the extra 7.5 months seem worth it.

So far I have been completely blown away by how helpful, friendly, and organized everyone at Hopkins has been - and from what I have heard organization is not all that common in nursing schools! Also, if you have any plans to eventually teach or work in research, then the doors that the Hopkins name will open later are worth considering.

Good luck with your decision - it's a good problem to have!

Thanks Protongirl! really appreciate your insight.

I've heard from a nurse who graduated from this program that there is a very conservative "painting" of what a nurse "should" be, though I take her opinion with a grain of salt since it was her personal experience (itsounded like she didn't have a good one). I can't say it hasn't left me with some questions about the particular nursing philosophy though... what do you think about this??

DizzyMissLizzy: Congrats on your acceptance. May I ask how you found out? phone call? letter? I'm still waiting to hear from them...

Does anyone know what the acceptance rate was this year? I'm just curious bc I know JH had a HUGE increase in applications this year.

HowserDoogie (love your username btw haha)

I got a phone call from the Director of Admissions. I was supposed to have a phone interview, but instead got a call telling me about the long waiting list for the accelerated BSN/MSN program (which I originally applied to) and it didn't hit me that I was accepted until she said that I was offered a seat in the traditional program. A little caveat, but I don't really mind. Hope this helps, I think they are still trying to call people since they got so behind with the delay from the snow storm (aka they are really behind)...

Congrats to you, Dizzy! I was accepted ASBN but switched to traditional after more thought. I ended up deciding that the pace of the ABSN would be overwhelming for me.

Could you elaborate on what your friend said about a "conservative painting of what a nurse should be?" I'm not sure I understand what that means.

Hi rockstarr! Yes, I agree... JHU will be the only program that is not accelerated out of all the schools I applied to, so I've got some thinking to do.

As for what this JHU grad said, I will say it was a very short interaction with her (She was the friend of my sister's acquaintance... it was a pretty short, shallow conversation). I was kind of puzzled by what she was trying to say, but this is what I remember of it:

I honestly don't really know what she meant by saying that JHU having a "conservative painting of what nurses should be," but she went on to say that the program was very unforgiving for making small mistakes, and that she feels less pressure at her current nursing position than she did while she in school. I can't remember if she was ABSN or traditional...

I don't mean to freak anyone out! But her opinion was just my first impression from a JHU nursing grad :\ usually I'm used to people gushing about how great their schools are!

DizzyMissLizzy - without context it is really hard to know what she was referring to. All of the current students and new grads that I spoke with were at the open house. Presumably they were both willing and possibly asked to attend, so it is hard to gauge whether they were a representative sample. But, they were all very enthusiastic and spoke highly of their experiences at Hopkins.

So far my opinion is based primarily the interections that I had at my interview and since my December acceptance. I also appreciate the level of support and preparation that they seem to provide in preparing for the job market - I already printed and assembled their "Career Binder."

Unfortunately, I cannot speak to the student experience that we will have, but I have to think that a warm, supportive environment is key to succeeding and I have found that to be the norm thus far.

Of course, I have been accused of being Pollyannic more than a time or two!

I've had much the same experience as Protongirl... I certainly get the impression that it's a very warm and supportive environment! I also was able to email a recent graduate of the ABSN who is now a nurse on the West Coast. I don't know her personally (friend of a friend of a friend... lol), and was only able to have a brief interaction with her, however she had great things to say about the program, but was very honest about how challenging and fast paced (yet manageable) it was. She also said that she had many opportunities for all sorts of experiences (like the Birth Companions program).

I think there will always be some people who feel that the program they've enrolled in wasn't the best for them. It really depends on the person and their individual circumstances, of course.

I researched quite a few schools before I decided on JHU, and what really put it over the top for me was my series of interactions with the school... from the initial calls to admissions (honestly, the friendliest, most helpful staff!), online chats, the open house, and the fantastic communication all through the application and acceptance process. Also, JHU appeared to me to be far more organized than any of the other schools I looked into, with more extra-curricular opportunities, as well.

In the end, I guess it all boils down to what's right for you and what yu need... and hopefully everything else will follow

Does anyone know if JHU has any sort of tuition repayment programs? Or does anyone know how likely it is to get a job at JHMI after graduating with the ABSN?
