I cant imagine that the shortage has already been resolved. Unfortunately the economy is poor...but I feel that nurses will always be needed. So keep applying!

When I attended the hemet fair, there were only about 5!! nurses there, I expected 100!

Keep applying guys, we'll find something!!!

Bummed to read this thread since I am just about to go to school in NY for an entry masters program. Moving from CA to NY, then paying a bunch of money for my degrees, and then coming out to no job?! :bluecry1:

What time were you at hemet? I was there at around 11 and they had to get more chairs cuz they ran out of seats....

I think everyone who needs/wants a job should keep applying and I do hope most people will find something but I thinks its inaccurate to go by those articles. First off, they were written last summer when even then the situation was different. There are lots of schools pumping out new grads every semester and limited new grad trainings. I am currently leaving Public Health and going back to acute care. I can do this because I haven't been out of the hospital that long but it wasn't easy. I know nurses with more experience than I who would have a hard time getting a job. There is not much of a shortage here in my area of the Bay.

Just trying to stay positive! Theres a more recent article.

Schools may be pumping out graduates, but according to this article....many of them arent passing the boards :(

Maybe some areas of california are more difficult than others....good luck guys!

Can't get anything here in NE FL. I am a returning nurse and the jobs are very scarce. And with this new legislation that obamanation has put into the so-called "stimulus plan" is going to affect us even further....

I'm having a tough time getting a job, too! Either the positions are being cancelled or someone more qualified is hired. It's totally frustrating to keep running into 'we're looking for someone with more real nursing experience''. How am I supposed to gain the 1 year of experience if I don't get hired? There needs to be more trust out there, employers!!!:mnnnrsngrk:

I was an LPN for 6 years and have been an RN for the last 21 years. I've been working Level 1 Truama Center ED's at teaching facilites as an agency nurse for years. I'm not dull, under qualified or undereducated.

When people lose their jobs, they lose insurance. When that happens they loss the ability to pay for health care. They then don't need that extra nurse ( agency ). It's a domino affect. Keep plugging on, the dam will fill up soon.

Best wishes to all and a roof over your head.

No, the article isn't saying "many of them aren't passing the boards"--almost everyone US educated passes the boards. It just uses the number of people who passed the boards as evidence of how many new nurses we're getting each year, not saying people are failing.

Note, also, that it even mentions in the article that it can be hard for new grads to get jobs.

While I respect wanting to think positively, I think it's a mistake to avoid thinking about how REALLY BAD it is for jobseekers, especially new grads.

I think it's good to remember, too, that the shortage of experienced nurses can actually make it harder for new grads to get jobs. The hospitals can't hire new grads without experienced nurses to precept them.

Hi there,

I've been a nurse at a major bay area hospital off and on (more on) since 1988. 1 year ago I took a year off to look into going back to school for an MSN and decided not to do that. So I thought, I'll just go back. Wow, was I ever surprised. It took me 5 1/2 months of very active looking and contacting EVERYONE I know but I finally got a job. Not back in the hospital but close by.

Here's what I learned in the process: There is not a shortage of nurses in the Bay Area. A lot of nurses who were planing on retiring didn't and part time/per diem nurses picked up more hours and as a result there are few to no positions left. When you see a position posted it's because the hospital is legally required to post any open reqs for a certain period of time but most of these positions are filled by internal candidates.

A few suggestions as a new grad: 1. Cast a wide net 2. Volunteer in a health related area (ie. American Heart Association) and network like crazy! 3. After filling out the online applications, call the recruiting office and get in front of someone and start talking. 4. Drop off a resume and cover letter to the mailbox outside the door of the manager who will have the final say on who gets hired. YOu need to go around the recruiting offices. 5. Start cold calling. Ask people you want to work for if you can take them to lunch or for coffee to pick their brains. People who love their jobs also like talking about it.

Good luck!

Hey NickiLaughs...I was at the hemet fair today. I was the girl from las vegas who didnt have a ca license yet. So clearly that put me at a stand still....

I'm looking to move to LA so hopefully the Pasedena Fair will prove fruitful. You sound very knowledgeable about california and the job opportunities. We should talk more :) I just moved from las vegas, to socal, so I feel completely like a fish out of water. email me at [email protected] and we'll chat :) thanks for all the info, sorry we didnt meet this morn.

"...feel...like a fish out of water..."

Do you know some fishes can walk when they are out of the water?

It depends on what type of fish you are...

Keep your head up!

Tomorrow is another day!

Feel better! See you in the Pasedena Job Fair!

I am having the same problem finding a job. It seem that everyone that has an open position has 30+ applications. I get better leads from my friends that are already working.
