  1. I totally agree. I had my ex get a liver transplant at our "great" hospital... Couldn't understand the nurses when the spoke. I stated to one of them one night. He doesn't get Zantac... He gets Zosyn.... she say... no, no...he was already on IV protonix... Dear God in Heaven...Save us. Send the nurses from whince they came. The US has scabbed from other countries until our services have degraged to an area where it is unsafe without a list from the doc and a family/friend nurse at bedside to check againt their errors. PLEASE.
  2. I was told in 1976 that I was not nursing material. I had dreamed all of my life about becoming a nurse. I was told that I was not nursing material. This was said from a counselor at the college that I wished to attend... I had seen the sign showing the college entrance since I was 6. I went home and cried.... I had many jobs in motels and as cashiers... A man robbed the store that I worked in.. they kidnapped, raped and killed the young lady. I tried one more time. Out of 300 applicants I was selected. Out of the 25 that were picked for the LPN program, only 10 graduated. I was one of them. I moved back to my home state to be near family. I really wanted to be an RN. I found that they had fired that counselor for derliction of duty. I applied, got 2 2 year degrees and obtained an A.A. and an A.S. in 2 years. I then went on to get an A.D.N. degree. 5 years as an LPN and 21 years as an RN. I always tell the students that I precept... there are rules that everybody must follow. Count nobody out. I was precepting an older nurse in an ICU... the nurse manager was also her instructor. I watched this nurse manger ride this student like she was a calf in slaughter. I, as well as several others knew when they saw this conversation was taking place advised her that she should complain... She got her instructor changed and excelled. Turns out she had been an LPN from my first school... I still get Christmas cards from her. Don't eat our young.
  3. I was an LPN for 6 years and have been an RN for the last 21 years. I've been working Level 1 Truama Center ED's at teaching facilites as an agency nurse for years. I'm not dull, under qualified or undereducated. When people lose their jobs, they lose insurance. When that happens they loss the ability to pay for health care. They then don't need that extra nurse ( agency ). It's a domino affect. Keep plugging on, the dam will fill up soon. Best wishes to all and a roof over your head.
  4. Studies have shown that nail polish chips, this leaves areas where psuedomonas can grow and flourish. Artifical nails are also not good as they do the same thing AND grow multiple types of fungus. Nurses are to look asexual. It helps the patient feel more able to talk to their caregiver.
  5. I would take that class 3 times in a row if it were available to me as a new student. THAT is one of the most important areas that you will utilize as a nurse...You may start in med/surg, but if you want to excel... calculations are imperative. Good luck on your future career. I've been a nurse for 26 years. Just started my beloved DIL on her new path.
  6. What I want is an answer to our queries. I find it odd that the originator has left us high and dry. I do hope that her personal problems are resolving. Much luck to her and her family.
  7. I would put her in the general bed and pin her daughters down to ask/answer questions. Family seems to be overwhelmed with her car and only one daughter assisting. May be fatigue on that daughters part. May need skilled placement for a respite for family.
  8. May do all over the above, chemistries, UA and C&S... Taking a through history of home care may help as well. Are daughters competent to deal with care? Hydration? ADL's?
  9. I want to let you know that there are many of us here. You don't need to suffer in slience. "sing it Honey", it makes yah whole....
  10. Don't be distressed... I was quite shocked by what most of we nurses found when going to California. There are nurses there, that have bull rings in their noses. They wear the motorcycle boots that that wore when coming to work and take off their riding clothes and put on a scrub dress... this nurse in particular, as I have mentioned also has tattoos of skeletons going up both arms. and her hair is red and black checked. If I was shot, as I have seen, (more in a 6 week contract) than I have in my whole 25 years...of nursing... I would want this nurse to save my life. Forget the small stuff honey... Just be good at what you do and really mean it. Good luck... P.S. I don't have any tattoos, piercings or any other thing that they warned about in nursing school...Do what you need to do to get through.
  11. I have been a nurse for 25 years. 5 of them as an LPN...an RN for almost 20 years...Most of the nurses that I now work with here in Georgia all meet in California. Yes... the west coast has a southern accent. 2 years ago on my second shift at a private hospital, there was no house supervisor. Nurses were going to have to have 13 patients a piece unless they had a super...I agreed as I've been there and done that, time and again in my long history...Women/Men... get a clue...I work now in a 44 bed ED level one trauma center in California. Most of the nurses I work with are from my home state of Georgia...Gettin' it now??? We have 4 pts in the ED. or 2 in the ICU or 3 in the transitional care unit. Pay attention. What do you not understand about the word... NO??? We work for an agency that affords us to fly there, pay for extended housing, rent a car for however long you'd like to stay and work. WE COME HOME WITH TWICE THE $$$ and NO BS...even after paying the above...
  12. I applaud you. We need more parents to stand up and not take anything less. This is to the parent who kept following up on the death threat/rape threat of her daughter.
  13. The best thing you can do it double bag the "evidence" call the police and have a report done. I hope all turns out well.
  14. I work PRN in a local nursing home. There are 68 patients and 1 RN, 3-4 CNS's. It's consistently busy...Too much for 1 nurse....
