If you do a search or look through the threads you will see that this topic comes up often. Bottom line is even experienced nurses are having a hard time finding a job right now. New grad programs have been canceled or downsized. Even those acute care facilities with new grad programs are getting hundreds of applications. Look to SNFs, sub acute facilities, prisons, etc. Look to see if hospitals are going to have a new grad program this summer and when their application period is. Good luck.

those one's are hiring, but you're going to get trained individually, not in a new grad program.
the desert hospitals have no new grad programs until june/july.
It is a rough time for jobs. I just graduated and got my license and began my search.
thank you very much for your help :)
no problem. As a heads up, hemet valley medical center is having a job fair/hiring event on tuesday. I'm going.

I'm also a recent grad looking for a job in Socal. in addition to the hemet opportunity, if you go to http://events.nursingspectrum.com/event.cfm?EID=686&type=Expo they are having a career fair in pasedena on feb 26th. anyone know of any other opportunities?
Isn't that going to end up being more for jobs in the LA area though? Pasadena is quite a drive. I don't think that it'd be beneficial for me because I can't afford to move. Will you be at the hemet valley event tomorrow? Maybe I'll see you there
I will def keep events posted. But I have contacted most of the nurse recruiters in the area, and many hospitals won't hire until may/june. might just have to suck it up with a different job til then.
Good luck
Hey NickiLaughs...I was at the hemet fair today. I was the girl from las vegas who didnt have a ca license yet. So clearly that put me at a stand still....
I'm looking to move to LA so hopefully the Pasedena Fair will prove fruitful. You sound very knowledgeable about california and the job opportunities. We should talk more :) I just moved from las vegas, to socal, so I feel completely like a fish out of water. email me at [email protected] and we'll chat :) thanks for all the info, sorry we didnt meet this morn.

Anyone have any information on hospitals hiring in the Bay Area?
I'm a BSN new grad and I've put in approximately 80 applications with only one interview. I've never seen a job market like this before.
When did the "nursing shortage" become the nursing shutdown?
The bay area has not had a nursing shortage for a long time... I was up there for nursing school. Everyone wants to live there because they pay some of the highest wages in the entire nation. Honestly, if I was living in the bay area, and had the opportunity to relocate...I would. It's an incredibly difficult place to get a job. Most of my classmates had jobs for many YEARS at places as LVNs, and their places of employment can't even convert them to RNs....they're stuck looking for jobs like everyone else.

There has not been a nursing shortage of new grads in the Bay Area in years. The locale is actually saturated with nursing programs. And the only ones that I have seen get a chance of being hired were those that did clinical at that facitility or worked there as a student extern.
We are also seeing new grad programs being cut as well in some facilities.
Even for those with two years of experience, things are not looking promising at the moment. I would seriously consider other areas if possible. Or you are going to have to look at long-term care or rehab type facilities if you wish to work at the bedside.
Things are just plain bad at the moment.
There are jobs, but they are going to go to those with significant work experience. And to add to it there are quite a few facilities that are having lay-offs or hiring freezes in place at this time as well. So their new grad programs are then put on hold.
To put it in perspective, where I live in so cal, there are more jobs than the bay area. But there is STILL a lot of competition. I know I'm not going to get my dream job, at this point I just want a job. I have my RN license, I have my degree, I have my CPR. But I have no experience...
I went to a career fair at a local hospital yesterday, there was AT LEAST 50 nurses, most with at least 5 years experience. They told me right away that I would probably only get a shot at their Tele floor, not ICU or ER like I had hoped. And at this point, I'd be more than happy to take it. Night shift? Bring it!
But I was not the only one applying for that spot, so we'll see if I even get that.
I've put in a good 10 apps everywhere locally. I'm still waiting for a chance to even go on one interview. I have a phone interview today. But I can't imagine a phone interview being that promising...
I am applying at places other than hospitals. I'll let you all know when I get something.
