jobs for new graduates ?

Published

Hello,

I am a nursing student at U of A after degree program, I' ll be graduating next year (August 2011) and I' m worried about finding a fulltime job after I graduate. I will have to choose where to do my preceptorship practicum, I' d like to do it in a province where there is a chance to get an offer for a fulltime position after I finish it. As it seems to be impossible to get a job ib AB now, I am willing to move anywhere in the country, NWT, NU, SK, northern BC ... I am completely bilingual, I used to live in Qc before moving to west 3 years ago and decide to take nursing in AB in english langage. Do you guys know if Quebec is hiring new graduates ? any experiences ? any thoughts about where a male new graduate should do his preceptorship in order to maximizer the chance to get a fulltime position ?

Thank you !

The only place I've never seen a male nurse is on a postpartum/gynie unit.

New grads are having a hard time finding that first job all over the country. Nursing isn't a guaranteed job anymore. It's often been hard to find a full time line as a new grad with people taking whatever position they could to get their foot in the job.

Don't you trust Stelmach and Duckie to follow through on their pledge to hire 70% of new grad nurses over the next few years?

I loved your post fiona59, good one about trusting Duck man and Stelmach. They must be related to our premier who also has a rather dubious relationship to keeping the many promises, he makes.

In regards to the op, perhaps being bilingual would open doors in Quebec if you want to work there.

We have a male nurse! ;-)

Can't think why you wouldn't trust Dancer & Prancer though?!

I just got home from ft st john (northern BC),... i live near Vancouver... anyways, I got talking to one of the ED nurses when we ventured into emerg after my cousin fractured her tib/fib, and she was saying how there are jobs, you just need to be willing to travel.

I also think because they would rather hire people as casual so no benefits have to be paid. As well... there are TONS of jobs for nurses WITH experience.. example-go look at the Fraser Health website (for BC) it is packed with nursing jobs, but all looking for nurses with experience.

I will grad in 2 years , aug 2012... and I am planning on doing my ESN as soon as I can so i can at least have a TOE in the door :)

Nothing is guaranteed nowadays.

Uhh... Well, at least here in Manitoba, most nursing students have job offers during their last year from hospitals they've done their practicum at.

I work at a local hospital and there are currently 12 positions waiting to be filled. A lot of them are in the float pool. As a new grad though, as especially a nurse, get your foot in the door as a casual... There's ALWAYS shifts to be had... You can't expect a full time job right after you graduate, especially in a profession that's all about seniority.
