Job opportunities for NP's

Just wondering what you guys know about job opportunities for NP's. A nurse I work with had to go back to bedside nursing due to a lack of NP jobs available. She said that PA's are used more often. Perhaps this is just in the midwest, Is this the case throughout the US? Thanks for all responses!

I agree with sjoe. Midwest is tough right now. California seems to have frequent openings for Family NP's, but not a lot of job openings in the midwest right now, unfortunately. It seems that with all the political and economical unrest right now, people are staying put, once they have a job they can tolerate. If your friend is unwilling to move, opportunitites will be slim, and competition tough. But as long as she's willing to do hospital nursing, she'll not go without a paycheck..there's the up-side! Good luck to your friend in her search!

A few years ago, there was a glut of Peds NPs in the East. I had 2 friends doing staff nursing because they couldn't find NP jobs. How sad after all that time and money spend on education.

Tell your NP friend to look into Wisconsin. There are a fair amount of NP positions here especially in cities like Milwaukee, Madison, Oshkosh and Eau Claire.

They are in as much demand as the PAs here. Most of the places that advertise in the newspaper (or send job ops to my job...btw I work for a PA program and we help place PA students) use PAs and NPs interchangably.

If she is interested in relocating to WI, just pm me and I can direct her to some leads.

She is gonna have to go where the jobs are if she wishes to use her education and preparation as an NP. It is a shame and a waste not to. I wish her well.

The SNF I work at employs 2 NPs. I live in NY. I personally LOVE it when the NP has my floor. In my opinion, they listen better to the nurses and patients and they are more caring.

Anyway, back to the topic! :D

I've noticed a lot of NPs popping up in practices all over Long Island. Good luck to your friend. There is not really a job shortage for NPs here!
