Job offers while still in school

Hi Everyone -

I'm about to start applying for nursing programs and I just wanted to ask what everyone thought on the subject of job offers. I think most people's goal while going through school is to have a solid base of job offers when they graduate, especially in today's job market. For individuals who were offered jobs straight out of school, why do you think your employers targeted you? Was it mainly experience? Were you given an offer because you currently worked at the facility? Are you more likely to get job offers if you're at the top of your class? Is your score on the NCLEX a factor (and do employers even have access to your score, for that matter)?

Thanks for any input!

hi , i just finished up my RPN practical nursing which is equivalent to LVN in california. Before i obtain license can i obtain a job? while being the process of getting my license? if anybody knows any hospital, rehab or nursing homes that are hiring will you let me know where so i can apply, looking forward to getting a job to get experience. thx guys

Hi I graduated last May. I started applying in January, most of my graduating class had job offers by March and the rest had jobs upon passing state boards. I had 3 job offers and I think what attracted them was the fact that I was wanting to start out on a M/S floor & I followed up with them. The NCLEX score isn't a factor, no one knows their score/ how well/ terrible they did in each area. Its a matter of pass/ fail and ultimately obtaining a license. If u don't have a job b4 u pass boards don't panic, u will find a job when the license is in hand :)

I hope that helps.

I will be starting a nursing externship in a couple weeks at JHH. While I did not receive a job offer as an RN for after graduation, during the interview process the nurse manager did tell me that she wanted to hire an extern who was interested in staying on after graduation. I am a third semester nursing student and only a third of our class has summer jobs as CNAs, externs, PCTs, etc. I think the difference between those that have jobs and those that do not is that those who have jobs started the process early (in Feb) and were very proactive. I imagine it being quite similar for soon to be graduating students.

They didn't target me, I targeted them.

Didn't currently work at the facility. I had never even been in the doors there before.

Class rank shouldn't matter, although they might consider your GPA if you're applying to a new grad residency.

The only score anybody is worried about is pass/fail.

In my state, a new grad will not even be looked at for non-residency jobs until you have your license in hand. Oh, sure...nurse recruiters and nurse managers from the units you did your final clinicals in can highly encourage you to apply--as a hint toward the fact that they like you and would be willing to interview you--but you will NOT get an offer until you are licensed. Classmates who have externships aren't even being offered jobs until they get a license, although they are clearly preferred by what is being said to them on an individual basis.

Nothing is ever an absolute. The OP may be that anomaly:)

Um, if you passed the NCLEX you would be in the BON registry. They don't go to the testing company. They don't see your score. You don't even get to see your score. It is pass or fail.

That's basically what I said.
