Hi, I hope someone can help me make sense of this situation. I interviewed on Wednesday for the OR. I thought the interviews went very well, and was pleased with them. Rumor has it there are 3 candidates for 2 OR positions (GN).
I got a phone call yesterday from HR who hold me they'd definitely be offering me a job, but they "weren't sure where that was going to be just yet." I asked if that meant I might be offered a med/surg job and she said yes. Now don't get me wrong. I have a lot of respect for med/surg nurses, but it is something that I absolutely hate.
I understand that with 3 candidates for 2 jobs, someone is going to be disappointed, but here's my problem: I have the 2nd highest GPA in the class, and I have worked my tail off for that position. I am in the running for the Pink Cross award at graduation, which is for students who have demonstrated excellence not only in theory, but on the clinical floor as well, and who have helped promote professionalism and caring in nursing. I have about 12 years' managerial experience. I am liked and respected by my peers. I really thought I had everything going for me, and now I am just devastated.
Someone please tell my WHY did I work so d*mn hard in school, only to be offered the one position I absolutely do not want?
Sorry for the rant, but I really have to get this off my chest and get some perspective from others. I know in theory, I am still in the running for the OR position, but I have a feeling they're just trying to let me down easy.

As a new grad myself who isn't working yet, I don't have much helpful advice. However, I want to encourage you to hang in there and i wish you well getting the OR position that you want. Also, are there any other facilities where you can also apply, like an outpatient surgical center? Ya know, to kind of improve your chances of getting an OR type job?

Some times working hard isn't the only thing that it takes.
I worked my butt off and the only place I wanted to work was ICU. I didn't have "experience" in an ICU environment so they took others ahead of me who also had bachelors vs my ADN. I got straight A's in nursing school and prereq's, worked full time in a long term acute care hospital as an aid.
But you know what...who cares, you and I can deal with a floor job for 6 months then move up to what we actually want to do. We can learn from what we experience, and it will probably make us better nurses in the field we want to be in. Look at it this way or just apply at another hospital, just don't be bitter in the job they offered because you didn't get "what you deserved"...most of the time RN with a C+ in school = RN with an A+ in school. Personalities and work ethic make a huge difference.

That hospital doesn't deserve you. Can you look for greener pastures?

You asked her if you "might" be offered the med-surg position and she said "yes"....okay, but you "might" be offered the OR position;)
I wouldn't get too upset until I found out for sure which position I was being offered.

just remember that you are not the only that works hard in nursing school. maybe the other 2 canidates worked just as hard as you. not every new grad gets their first choice. sometimes you got to pay your dues for awhile.

Even though you are disappointed, this is just exactly the way it's likely to go much of the time now that you are entering the real world. You might want a certain assignment on your shift, but that's no guarantee you'll get it. You might want 4th of July off, but that doesn't mean you're going to get it. You will rarely be able to call your own shots...but learning to carry on with whatever it is you are given will serve you well as you mature.
Good luck.

From what I understand you don't want to work med surg. If they offer you a job on a med surg floor, don't accept it and look else where. I guarantee there is a candidate who would relish the med surg positon, why should you take the positon, be miserable, therefor make your new co-workers miserable and not respect you. I guarantee if you are working in an arena you do not want to be in, others will know. They may take it as a slap in the face that their area of choice is not "good enough". I'm just saying I would think long and hard first. BTW, I see this exact scenario taking place on the floor I am precepting. New Grad, hates med surg, hates nights. She accepted the job anyway. It is not going well. Will they keep her after her 90 days probation? We'll have to wait and see. Just my two cents.

I wouldn't get too freaked until you are actually offered a position. If they do offer you a job and it isn't the one you want, tell them, thanks, but you'll keep looking. You may find that they come back to you with a better choice. This could take a couple of days. Stay strong and wait it out.
Sometimes emplyers start at the bottom because they know that anyone who is feeling desperate will take whatever offer comes their way. When a more confident prospective employee says no, the offer mysteriously improves. It's win-win for you. Either you'll keep looking until you find a bet fit, or you'll be given a better offer where you've already applied.
I wish you well. Let us know what happens.
