job market for new grads-Cleveland

Published

Hello everyone, I am currently a nursing student, and will be graduating in 3 years. I know there are many other things that I should be concerned about. However, I would like to know the status of the job market for new grads in the Cleveland area. This issue is of great concern to me because I constantly hear about people not getting employed prompltly after graduation. I frequently that this a national trend, but are new grads getting employment easily in Cleveland, OH. Are BSN students getting immediately employed after graduation? What is the current job market like on Cleveland, OH?

I think the job market for a BSN new grad in the Cleveland area is better than new grads with an ADN. Cleveland does have several major hospitals (Cleveland Clinic, Metro Health, and University Hospital) that are always hiring new grads. Having a BSN is plus. My suggestion is to work as a nurse intern or aide while in school. Good luck to you!!!

Sometimes people are not getting hired promptly because the HR process is similar to the of a snail.

When you get closer to graduating, just get in touch with nursing recruiters at those big hospitals. It helps you get in faster

BSN are being hired over ADN. The smaller community hospitals are still hiring ADN unless they have magnet status and then it is kind of a crapshoot if they have the percentage of BSN they need.

I second pp once you get a couple semesters of clinical under your belt definitely get a pool, prn, or per diem, or weekend position as an aid or a patient sitter.

I know that Cleveland Clinic (main campus) isn't hiring new grads right now (as of last week), as there is a big initiative to cut the budget. UH hasn't been hiring new grads, however they are looking for experienced nurses. I heard Metro had a new grad program, but was unable to find such information on their website. I think the key to getting hired faster is to work as an PCA while in nursing school, have your BSN and also to precept at a hospital you will want to work for. I have my ADN and was able to get a 2 job offers in the ICU before taking boards, and I believe that was due to precepting in an ICU at one of the Cleveland Clinic hospitals and also working at the Clinic.

You have to check UH's website frequently. Sometimes they will have new grad positions and then a day or two later they are already taken down. I agree with CC, not sure how many new grads they will be hiring. UH is looking for experienced nurses (which does not help myself or you haha). Metro does have a lot of openings and from the description it does not say you have to have experience, however most are 64-72 hours and are on weekends/holidays : /

I will be graduating in December with a BSN. I live in NC now but intend to move to Cleveland. Can anyone tell me which health system is hiring new grads and how soon can I apply to a position?

It depends. Metro Health has job postings that look like they will hire new grads but they are for 64-72 hours for the pay period and mostly weekends. Check out their site Home - The MetroHealth System. They are a county hospital so they have state benefits. Cleveland Clinic may also be hiring, check out their site Cleveland Clinic. As for UH I know right now they have no job openings for RN's with less than 1 year experience. Check their site frequently though because sometimes they have 1 or 2 openings but they do not last long.

Check everywhere, even the smaller community hospitals. I precepted at one and got a job - with my ADN, the pay isn't less than that of the clinic, but I don't have to drive and pay parking, and it's way less than a dollar per hour difference. :)

well..i graduated from kent last December with my BSN(2012). I took boards in March. I did get an RN job on the unit that I was a PCNA on, but I gave it up for an opportunity in L&D at a local hospital. I was fired when my 90 days were up, and the cleveland clinic hospital I was a PCNA at couldnt take me back due to budget. That was in August. Ive applied EVERYWHERE...and no calls. None. Until last week. I was called by a local hospice. So, well see.

My friend graduated this May, and some of his classmates passed boards. None of them have gotten jobs yet, out of 5 people he knows.

Ive heard of many others in the area being cut to part time or are being let go. However, UH is looking for experience and they are shelling out big bucks for experienced RNs. Heh.

It depends. I have heard the horror stories of new grads with BSN's not being able to find a job for months after graduation and I have heard of new grads finding a job right after or even before graduation. My advice (which I will be doing) is to apply to a bunch of hospitals, both in and out of state.
