job market for new grads-Cleveland

Hello everyone, I am currently a nursing student, and will be graduating in 3 years. I know there are many other things that I should be concerned about. However, I would like to know the status of the job market for new grads in the Cleveland area. This issue is of great concern to me because I constantly hear about people not getting employed prompltly after graduation. I frequently that this a national trend, but are new grads getting employment easily in Cleveland, OH. Are BSN students getting immediately employed after graduation? What is the current job market like on Cleveland, OH?

I agree with OUxPhys' comment. I recently read two articles about hiring; one said that new grads were averaging 14 months before getting hired and the other said 18 months!

I think that there is also a time lapse with new grads due to the residency programs which only start at certain times. Our next residency doesn't start until March so you could interview now, and not be called until closer to the residency date.

Does St. Vincent's Charity Med Center hire new grads? What about ADNs? I saw they have some openings and it doesn't look like they require experience (though it is "preferred") and doesn't specify BSNs either...

South west general Hires new grads there were some in my orientation 5 months ago

They are expanding new Icu and er. Its a decent place to work.

There are always crappy departments At cleveland clinic where nurse managers run out 12 nurses at a time. They they hire new grads

no smokers need to be fit pass fit test. Go thee for one year tuff it out learn alot and get out.....

I know I am a little late to this topic...but I graduated in May 2013 and was hired by University Hospitals in Cleveland in August. I am in their nurse residency program and know for a fact that many new grads have been hired since I started. I didn't know anyone/have any experience with UH before getting hired but it seems like most of the RNs that are hired either worked as CTAs there or had clinicals there. You just have to look at their job openings everyday because they change so quickly. Good luck!

My best advice is to get in touch with a recruiter when you get close to graduation! I knew that the hospital I wanted to work at didn't hire any nurses before they passed the NCLEX, but I got in touch with a recruiter about 6 months before my graduation and shadowed on the units I was hoping to apply for. Since I went to school in Columbus, I wasn't able to precept in the hospital so I figured shadowing was a way to show my interest and to confirm that it was a good fit for me. Less than a week after passing my NCLEX, I had a phone interview, an in person interview, and accepted a job offer (in the Cleveland area)! Best of luck to you!

Interesting...could you elaborate on this fitness test? I've got visions of Army basic training running in my head - push-ups, sit-ups, run... I'm curious about this because I've seen various efforts to improve the health of healthcare professionals, and I've worked at one unit where the nurse manager would not hire any former or current smokers. But I've never seen a fitness test, in civilian hospitals anyway. I didn't see any information about it on the SW General website. If you don't mind, I'd like more details.

The fitness test is an isokinetic exercise machine that you push and pull with your arms and legs as hard as you can. Google it, not as scary as it sounds. One person I know though has failed it and lost the job, but for the most part it looks as if most people pass. You also have a couple of other tests (not physical) but I believe your offer is only contingent on the fitness test.

Get in with a hospital as an aid. Your opportunities will increase as hospitals hire internally before posting jobs externally.
